I keep a K3II just for wildlife, paired with DA 300/4 and DA 1.4x AW AF. I'm really looking forward to the full frame teleconverter.

Pentax DA 200mm 2.8 - is it real APS-C lens or a real full frame lens ?

After having used the DA* 200/2.8 extensively with K1 and K1II for a few years, I thought I may give it up after getting the DFA 70-210/4. However these two lenses are for different experiences and while I don't carry it any more in the field, the 200/2.8 still is a pleasure to use for portraits and astrophotography. Sharp wide open, beautiful bokeh, excellent handling, decent autofocus, all that defines a keeper.

Pentax 24-70 vs 28-105

DFA 28-105mm, while excellent optically on K1II, is an air pump. I often shoot in rainy (think Napali, Kauai) or dusty (like Mount Rainier volcano) conditions, and zooming out sucks in efficiently water and dust. After having the K1 serviced for internal corrosion, and having to clean the sensor way too often, I switched to using in the field a combo of FA 20-35/4 and DFA 70-210/4. The wide angle is not waterproof but its zooming volume displacement is minimal, while the tele zoom is exceptionally well sealed with internal zoom and focus. Now the DFA 28-105 is relegated to standard travel lens.

DA*60-250 Out of stock?

After so much waiting and anticipation for DFA 70-210/4 - the glass to absolutely fill the last gap - Pentax hard core zeroed on the next target: why Pentax didn't re-release an DA 60-250/4 instead? Of course assumptions and one test of one sample make up for the whole construction.
Just like others I waited eagerly for the lens, unlike most I actually got it - and find it totally lives up to my expectations. Not only the long end wide open is excellent (better than DA 200/2.8 at f/4), but it is so in the most extreme conditions where internal zoom and focus ensure no water or dust is sucked in. I have no regrets for not getting a de-baffled DA 60-250/4; with the DFA 70-210/4 - Pentax did the right thing.

What's New in Capture One Pro 20?

Indeed that is a usable substitute. However, the image changes in 3 steps: modified including tool effect <-> original <-> modified without tool effect. Subtle changes are thus harder to notice because of the intermediate transition through original view. By contrast, in ON1, the image switches between with and without tool change, faster and cleaner.

The K1 II "generic" profile for PEF seems to work pretty well on the couple of images I have tried. The biggest improvement I am seeing is the noise control with default setting, which keeps CO one step ahead of the already improved ON1 20. Speaking of the latter, I have become quite proficient with the ON1 workflow during the CO - K1 II hiatus, and now I find I am missing on CO the ability to flip on and off the tool to quickly evaluate the effects of a change. ON1 also has a before - after general toggle, which on CO I can only achieve by cloning the original image. I wonder why CO hasn't adopted this very useful feature, as it seems like a low hanging fruit?

In live mode - is the same excellent meter as it accounts for the entire frame. In optical viewfinder mode, the multi segment reverts to center weighted meter, or you can specifically use spot meter: regardless, the exposure becomes again a function of the photographer and not of the camera. ;)

I too survived a few months on K-3 II, and I got to appreciate it's lightness when running trails, so more yielding than K1 II, even with FF lenses! Now I need to get a really compact zoom for it, and ideally with a zoom extension stopper. Hm... maybe Sigma 18-200/3.5-5.6 Contemporary...?

Beta 6 brought one particular change (?), sufficient for me to pre-order CO 20. I will be testing side by side with ON1 20. I have been using CO since ver 5, and as I said, am willing to give them a chance. It was a remarkably innovative product back then, the enthusiasm for change was as palpable as is with ON1 now, I do hope CO finds its way again.

Unfortunately the few K1 II profiles I have tried with CO 12 feel like a step back from the K1 - CO11 results: less depth, less latitude, and it's definitely not the camera.

ON1 2020 image quality is very good and almost on par with CO; where it still lags behind is highlights recovery and noise control (though they progressed significantly on the latter). ON1 has a respectable database of Pentax lenses profile; even if crowd sourced, I am pleased with how some of my lenses are supported. The deal killer that was low speed has been spectacularly removed in 2020, to the point I find now ON1 2020 faster on K1 II pef files than CO11 was on K1 files.

Yet I am willing to give CO another try, and I have subscribed for and downloaded Ver 20 beta. Disappointingly yet not surprisingly, it still lacks native support for K1 II. This is ridiculous regardless how much good will one can summon. CO won't get my money.

Not so sure about my loyalty after Phase One tested it so badly by ignoring K1-II for years. I have moved in the meantime to ON1, which has evolved exponentially in the last year both in features and speed(!), CO20 better be stellar to catch up...

Pentax K-3 vs K-1

You will experience a big step up moving to K-1: higher dynamic range and richer colours, more consistent exposure and overall better out of the box photos that require little post processing, or so is my experience after using K-1 II and K-3 II for a while (I keep the latter exclusively for telephoto shooting). Probably your biggest decision is what full frame lens to pair the body with: if your photography style is slow and deliberate there's a wider range of options, not so if you need to be light and fast, when only a couple of lenses fit the bill. Also factor in the software support: K-1 II is still notably ignored by the likes of Capture One, MacOS, etc. and you may have to accommodate new workflows like ON1, etc. If you are more specific about your intents and habits I'm sure you will get more targeted advice.

@TJWest, since you already have the HD FA 28-205/3.5-5.6, you may want to factor in the significant boost in AF performance with K1 II. Or at least this is my own experience.

I do trail running photography with K1 II and DFA 28-105/3.5-4.5, with subjects running towards camera and the success ration is remarkably high (>75%). I use AF-continuous with preselected zone area, and tracking is a big improvement over K1 with the same lens. The 28-105/3.5-4.5 is twice as fast than any other lens I tried.

I'm glad to hear it, I really wish for a good Pentax support center.
My experience with Precision is ambivalent: years ago they repaired a body, a lens and did a CLA on another lens on short turnarounds. Last year however it took them 4 months to do a prepaid upgrade of K1 to K1 Mark II, after they quoted me an additional work item for replacing corroded parts near the bottom plate, with which I agreed. Only after I ping-ed Ricoh to expedite the replacement parts shipment, and waited through another round trip to Precision due to infamous broken mode dial, did I finally get my K1 Mark II. Which, to their credit, works splendidly and is a worthy upgrade. And, by the way, Precision waived the additional repairs cost. Best wishes to them, after all.

Best wide-angle lens for K-1?

Yeah, nothing more obvious than the wide angle gap in Pentax's full frame lens line. :) Until Ricoh finally sees it, I opted for a good copy of FA 20-35/4, a gem of a lens, very good optically and truly portable (like in summiting glaciated peaks with it). I supplement the very wide angle end with a Rokinon 14/2.8: outstanding optics, poor mount tolerances that occasionally lead to electric contacts failure. Oh well, is still more than a gap stopper.

ON1 adds dual monitor support

My ON1 approach is from Capture One (which chose to actively disregard K1 II ):
- the full screen window still wastes quite a bit of real estate with controls pane, as opposed to C1 where you can have the image cover the entire second screen and controls plus browser on the first screen;
- speed, speed, speed - C1 is pretty nimble with K1 raws on my 2018 Macbook Pro i7 / 2 cores / 16GB and a second 4K screen, while ON1 with K1 II files has blocking UI delays on most editing steps (preview, transitions, load, etc.) with just the Retina screen.

ON1 still has a way to go. While I'll continue paying for its upcoming versions as I want to support fresh competition, I would still buy C1 12.x right away the moment they add K1 II support.

Hd fa35/2

For ten years now the FA 35/2 was my favourite, especially after I got the K-1, for colour rendition, bokeh handling wide open(!), minimal chroma aberrations... and yes, I am sorely tempted. Wished though Ricoh did it's homework fully and come at least with a quick manual focus implementation, it's entirely possible with screwdrive focus motors, proof is DFA 105/2.8. Anyways, the trend is promising, if they are onto resurrecting other film era designs, may I suggest FA 20-35/4! Who said FF must come with bulk and weight, the light and compact yet good optics are badly needed on both wide angle and tele spectrum!

Pentax K-1 II and Capture One

I had no qualms with the native Capture One profile for K1, and am shocked to realize CO 12 still doesn't support K1 Mark II. I have filed a ticket with Phase One technical support but won't hold my breath.
I'm sure there is value in the artisanal color profiles, but it really needs a professional profile to make CO really shine and surpass the camera JPGs.

I have to survive on my K3 II while K-1 is in service. There really is no comparison: K3 II may be very nice, but K-1 is pure joy. From simply looking through the viewfinder to the rich final image, K-1 is one big leap you take in one direction only. Too bad Ricoh and Precision Camera are keeping me preciousless for this long, I'm feeling incomplete. :)

FA 20-35 unobtanium ....Not sure what to expect from Promaster 19-35 alternative lens

I have played with my friend's Vivitar version of Promaster 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5 on K1, and is a decent lens: quite sharp in the frame center and less so and with significant chromatic aberrations towards the edges. It's certainly not on par with my copy of FA 20-35/4 in sharpness, but it also flares more and has less contrast.
Too bad Ricoh chose to outsource lenses to Tamron etc. when they could at least reissue compact and field oriented, Asahi era gems like FA 20-35/4.

DA*200 f2.8 for landscape - any experiences?

DA* 200/2.8 is a lightsome light pipe!
I got one together with K-1 just because I was out of options for a light tele lens that wouldn't burden me too much while climbing and hiking. There's still no such decent animal in Pentax line: the DFA 70-200/2.8 is ridiculously heavy and there's no signs of a light, sharp and weather sealed 70-200/4 at the horizon. The DA* 200/2.8 grew quickly on me and is now one of my favourite lenses, ranging from landscape to portraits, and supplements in backpack the FA 28-105/3.5-5.6 or FA 20-35/4 (another glaring hole in Pentax foundation!).

Pentax DA300 + 1.4x Teleconverter for Airshows

300mm X 1.4 might be overkill for a decent vantage point to an airshow. Especially for shooting planes formation or contrails describing aerobatics, I have found DA 200mm f/2.8 (on FF) is a better option.

How is the bokeh wide open with specular lights? This is one aspect where the old FA 50/1.4 is truly horrible, impossible to use for urban night photography not even at f/2.8. Not sure I would take the weight penalty just for that though...
