Lens Correction Profile -- arrgh! Help!

I thought I had created a lens correction profile to use on import in Lightroom 4, but I've just noticed that they are all screwed up. So here's what I've done. What am i doing wrong?

1) I go to a .DNG image and click "Reset" in the Develop module.
2) I go to LensCorrections. Under Color, I check "Remove Chromatic Aberration"
3) Under Presets, I choose Setup "Auto"
4) I choose Lens Profile "Pentax". ** At this point, the correct lens is picked by Lightroom**

Up to here, everything is fine. I then save this as a new Preset.

Now I apply this preset to a .DNG image taken with a different lens. Lens Make profile then goes to "None".

So, I try something else:

1) I go to a different .DNG image. Again, I remove chromatic aberration.
2) This time, under presets, I choose setup "Custom".
3) I choose Lens Profile "Pentax". ** At this point, the correct lens is picked up by Lightroom**

Again, up to here, everything is fine. I then save this as a new preset.

Now I apply this present to a .DNG image taken with a different lens. The lens profile goes back to the profile for the lens I had used to set up the profile in the first place.

I've been going round and round with this for awhile, trying different combinations of keystrokes, etc. I want a Preset I can use at import that will detect which lens I have used and then apply the proper correction. I know I must be making some stupid mistake but.... aaarghh!!

Thanks in advance.

I've been a loyal Pentaxian since the 1970s . Once the digital era began, I stuck with Pentax even though it might've been a lot easier to go Canon or Nikon -- and this UPP nonsense feels like an affront, an effort to screw loyal customers rather than appreciate us. So yes, add my name to the list.

In case anyone else has similar problems and happens to run across this thread at some point in the future: I've done a lot of shooting since replacing the SD card, and this hasn't happened again. So I'm pretty sure at this point that it was a faulty SD card.

It *is* an old SD card... I'll replace it, and see what happens. Thanks for this!

I haven't tried another RAW converter, no ... but could that really be the culprit? I shot around 50 images the same day within a period of a couple of hours, and this was the only "bad" image. This is typical: Many, many good images and only one bad one.

Once in awhile, my K5 has started producing images that look like this. I shoot in DNG format. FYI the image looks fine both on the preview screen and on preview prior-to-importing in Lightroom 4. Has anyone else ever seen anything like this? Any thoughts?

Pentax DA 15mm vs Sigma 15mm FE?

Does anyone have experience with these lenses for side-by-side comparison? I want to get an ultrawide for my K5 and don't want to deal with the size and weight of one of the ultrawide zooms, and so it seems that these two lenses are really the only game(s) in town. The DA 15mm is ideal in size and weight (I already own the DA 40mm and DA 21mm and love them), but I'm very attracted to the idea of the Sigma since, with its being a fisheye, it's actually more like 14mm (or even 12mm, some say). And it doesn't look all that much bigger/heavier than the DA Limited. Any thoughts, experiences? Thanks

I wish it were easier to get my hands on these lenses for side-by-side comparison. I've been longing for an ultra-wide too, and physical size and weight are critical factors for me, so I've been thinking about the DA 15mm. What I'd really like to do is to see the lens next to the Sigma 15mm fisheye (according to specifications just a tad bigger/heavier), shoot for a few minutes with each to get a sense of how they feel. Sure do wish there were a nearby camera store that sold both. Does anyone here have anything to say about these lenses compared to one another?

Just as I was finally ready to pull the trigger and buy the 15mm pancake lens, the price shot up from $505 to $649. However you cut it, this is Ricoh/Pentax saying "screw you" to its customers. This is not the way a company with an already-small (relatively speaking) customer base should behave. I've been a Pentax-person since my first Spotmatic in the 1970s, and I've resisted the temptation to move to Nikon/Canon all this time... and this is how the new Pentax says "thanks." I have a lot of money invested in Pentax gear at this point -- and I'm absolutely LOVING my K-5 -- but the time will eventually come to buy a new body, and at that point, I'll think again. Are you paying attention, Ned? Think of this message and multiply it by many, many thousands.

What do you suppose are the chances of an ultra-wide (something in the single digits: I do know about the 15mm so-called ultrawide) in pancake/hockey-puck form? Craving....

Like several people here, I have my K5 set to -0.5 EV as a default -- I discovered early on that I was happiest when the images were slightly underexposed and then adjusted in PP. Whatever this is, it *does* seem to be unique to the K5: I didn't need to do this either with my K20D or *ist-DL.

K5 extended warranty: It's not too late

I have an email from Pentax -- I wrote them to ask if I was still eligible to buy the extended warranty even though I purchased the camera back in June. Their note said that I could still purchase the warranty, and gave me a link to Adorama. I'll hang onto those emails from Pentax, just in case.

The idea of a swivel screen doesn't much interest me, either. Likewise video. I wonder if DSLRs will ever be marketed like automobiles -- with standard equipment, and add-ons (like a swivel screen and video) for those who want them.

Right, I bought mine from Adorama: I was directed there by Pentax in response to an email query. I too got my K5 elsewhere.

I just purchased the extended warranty for my K5. I purchased the camera in June, and bought the extended warranty from Adorama yesterday. I didn't know about the extended warranty -- or, it wasn't available -- at the time I purchased the camera, so I wrote to Pentax and asked if I could buy one now. I got the green light, so made the purchase yesterday. At $19.95, it seems to me this is a steal. So -- in case you thought you were out-of-the-running because you purchased your K5 *without* the warranty: It's not too late.

...and keep in mind that people who have a problem with the camera are more likely to post in the forums for advice and help than someone for whom the camera is working perfectly. What a dull post that would be!! "Just got my K5 and there isn't a thing wrong with it." (which would, btw, be *my* post)

The K5 is a low-light wonder, and the only way to really take advantage of this fact is to shoot in RAW and tinker with luminance in Photoshop or Lightroom (or the like).

Fantastic shots, Carrie! I'm on vacation in Amsterdam right now and missing my K5 like a lovesick teenager. What was I thinking, leaving it at home? A former K20D owner, I also have a Canon S95 for times when I knew I wouldn't want to haul my K20D around. Packing of this trip, I grabbed the S95 rather than the K5, almost without thinking. But I now realize that, with the 21mm pancake lens, it's barely larger/heavier than a point-and-shoot... I must remember this next time I'm traveling! I want my K5!!

I've found this depends to some extent on the lens. My DA 21mm Ltd (pancake) does much better at -0.5EV across the board, but my recently acquired DA 40mm Ltd (pancake) seems to like 0.

I try to buy all my electronics gear, including camera equipment, on Amazon. My K5 came from Amazon, I purchased it a little over a month ago. Their return policy is among the most generous around. Whenever something has gone wrong and I've had to make a return, I've felt very grateful that they make it so easy.

I'm a big (and recent) fan of TAv mode, too. What I typically do when in a situation I know I'll be taking some photos is to set both aperture and shutter speed to some "ideal" (e.g. if I'm looking for a relatively narrow depth of field where my subjects are mostly in motion, I might start out at f/4.0, 1/250th) and then point the lens to a place where the light is bright and again to a place where the light is dim, and watch what's happening with ISO. Depending on conditions, I'll then adjust aperture and shutter speed that will work in *both* bright and dim lighting, and where ISO is in an acceptable range. The result is practically as easy as point-and-shoot.
