PROBLEM WITH NEW 55-300 mm f/4.5-6.3 PLM lens

It's a retractable model. You have to turn the zoom ring to 55mm or beyond (with the help of a button on the barrel) to extend it first. This will make it ready to work.

Those revamps show what Ricoh isn't going to properly update (new optics, mechanics and AF motor) in the near future (or ever). Unfortunate.

Spotmatic F - meter needle issue
Posted By BarneyL

Hello everyone,

I have an old Spotmatic F which I bought around two years ago or so. Doesn't use it much these days, but anytime I did in the past, everything was smooth and accurate. Recently I discovered a strange issue - meter needle shows accurate reading for every shutter speed except 1/1000th, for which it spikes up like in 'B' mode. The shutter itself runs fine and this speed. The needle behaves this way regardless of metering method; both stop down and open aperture yield same results. When not metering, needle stays in the middle.

Honestly I can live with that, but I'd like to know whether this issue a) has easy fix b) will develop to something more serious if left untreated.

All the best

I personally wouldn't mind a fast crop sensor body for wildlife, as K-1 is suboptimal for that

If the resale value of gear is your main concern in a camera system, you should switch to Leica.

As a computer engineer, when I see something done in hardware rather in software, it usually means one of two things (or both):
1. Running dedicated hardware is more time/memory/power efficient than running equivalent code on general purpose machine (a DXO prime denoiser can take quite a bit of time, and it adds up when batch processing)

2. Hardware-embedded code is way harder to reverse-engineer (algorithm stays secret)

Of course, there might be some other reasons behind the AU. Those with the least faith in Ricoh engineers claim that development effort put into AU was cheaper than going for a newer generation of sensors. I consider that unlikely.

Mamiya ZD Digital SLR - What Digital Camera

"After months of speculation Mamiya has finally released availability details of its first medium format digital SLR. Originally announced at 2004?s Photokina show, the 22 megapixel Mamiya ZD is now available through authorised Mamiya retailers, priced 7000 plus VAT for a body only package."

Was 7000 GBP worth 22k USD back then?

I guess by the same reasoning, Zeiss lenses with 'Sonnar' in the name use design from 1929.

I moved from APS-C onto K-1 a while back. Got the three amigos, 100 Macro WR and 28-105. Plus some vintage glass that truly shine on this format. None of this feels heavy.

But maybe you're right. Maybe I should have stayed with crop sensor, as the Pentax future seems to be more about big and heavy Stars, rather than compact Limiteds. It would be a way to stand out from the crowd, but oh well.

That 'ancient design' comes from 2012.

Maybe it's a cynical part of me, but I can't help but smirk anytime a Pentax user says 'what an ancient design!' about some other lens, while most of the Pentax lineup is not exactly the freshest.

Anyway. I just wanted to say that big lenses, regardless how pixel-peeping level sharp, they are not the reason why I chose this system. I got into APS-C tempted by travel friendly selection of well built, compact primes + versatile, weather proof zooms. DFA 50 is an optically great piece of glass, but totally not what I consider Pentax' greatest strength. I got encouraged after Photokina last year, when Takeshi Arai said they had been working on new Limited lenses. Unfortunately, none of them has been released so far.

According to results from Roger's tests, at F/2 it is still better than Sigma A closed down one stop where it comes to resolution (although that probably is visible at pixel peeping level only). But yes, in general, the bokeh quality at F/2 might be a bit lacking compared to F/1.4. That's why I personally prefer Summilux Asph. Still very sharp up to corners with truly awesome bokeh. And weighs 330 grams.

Sure, it is manual focus. But there are also other MF lenses that weigh a ton for similar performance, like Otus Apo Distagon.

I'd like to ask for vignetting measurements for D FA*. Just curious. Also, two stops of vignette for F/2 lens, especially rangefinder lens (where a lot of users still shoot analog) sounds a bit excessive. Too bad there aren't many tests.

This is why I'm hoping for a test made by Lenstip. These guys aren't perfect of course; IMO pay too much attention to resolution figures (with pretty ad hoc 'usable image quality' level, but they have consistent methodology. They don't provide numbers for LoCA, but at least they have a strict standard for comparison in controlled environment.

Here's Sigma A 50 test for CA:

You're saying that like I didn't provide any. You just didn't find it convincing. Which is fine.

Totally OK. It's not like I'm a Leica affiliate and get a kickback each time someone drops 8 grand on a lens.

I used that example to counter the point you made earlier:
Based on flickr images, you said it was a toss up between Summicron and DFA* 50.
So assuming D-FA is optically excellent, APO summicron is optically excellent as well.
However, APO summicron is much smaller and lighter than DFA 50.

Therefore, light but optically excellent does exist.

Whether it's worth the money, well, is another issue.

Personally, I haven't seen real life prints from APO Summicron yet. But I've seen some from 50 Summilux ASPH. If I ever had money to buy a Leica, that would be a lens of my choosing.
