Didn't see this mentioned above (or else I missed it) but you can download HitFilm Express and use it for free. Apparently it's got all the same features as Hit Film Pro.

HitFilm Express: Free editing & VFX software - HitFilm.com

I've used Premiere and After Effects, Final Cut, iMovie, Windows Movie Maker, and a couple of others.

For the price (free) it's excellent. it's fairly intuitive and high quality.

What do you primarily shoot as subjects?
Have you looked back through your EXIF and checked your actual most used focal lengths? the answer may surprise you.

You may be using the 31 most on crop, but (as was already mentioned) on film or FF the 43 is closer to what the 31 is on APSc.

43 is a somewhat difficult FOV on crop, but i find it excellent on the Sony A7 series or on film.

If most of your shots are head and shoulders portraits, the 31 isn't well suited for that.
If most of your shots are wide-ish landscapes, the 77 isn't well suited for that.

Before someone shoots me down, YES I know there are many beautiful examples of portraits from the 31 and landscapes from the 77.

Legacy lenses on new digital FF

I think we can be pretty confident that these lenses will perform (in the middle of the frame)exactly the same as they do on crop cameras. It's not like trying legacy glass on digital is new just because an FF is coming. Obviously we'll finally get to see the performance at the edges and corners, but the center won't suddenly change.

I have lived in Beijing for almost 8 years now. Most of the places you mentioned you would do well to bring something wide. Are you doing it on your own schedule or with a tour group?

Edit: there are several great wall locations, some have vantage points where telephoto works beautifully too

I use a 16GB Class 10 Toshiba FlashAir card with my Q7 and have found it works well. (Also fine on the K10, K5iis). You may already know this but I'm pretty sure you can't transfer RAW over the wireless. I'm also not sure if it's the card or the Q7 but using RAW+ slows writing much more than my K5

Well, I've lived in China for 6 years. I know that they are capable of making high quality stuff here. The low quality stuff is sold here or to Walmart, while most of the high quality stuff is made for export (like the 08)

I'd like to know too. The optical quality and construction and feel of the 08 seem to be very good to excellent. Not your typical Made in China lens.

I tracked down a Premium Kit in Japan and had it delivered to China. It came in at about 945 USD including delivery. I'm planning on doing some reviews soon, but I thought I'd start this thread with something I find interesting. The following items came in the kit:

Q7 body...Assembled in Philippines
01 Lens...Assembled in Vietnam
01 Lens hood..Assembled in Vietnam
02 Lens...Assembled I'm Vietnam
02 Lens hood...Made in Japan
06 Lens... Made in Thailand
06 Lens hood...Made in Vietnam
08 Lens...Made in China
08 Lens hood... Made in Japan
Camera strap...China
CPL filter... Made in Japan

I'm impressed at the international effort made by Ricoh to make this kit work.

Why the AVERSION to video?

How embarrassing...despite choosing a Chinese name as my login and despite living in Beijing, I actually am a North American with English as my mother tongue. I'm hoping this isn't a language issue.
It's been a while since I've studied English, but I'm pretty sure my grammar is as accurate as most non- English majors. I can't vouch for my punctuation, though. I'm trying to get used to the updated keyboard on my phone.

As for the definitions you provided, I'd say my intended choice of wording encompasses those. I'd describe some of the comments I've read as a strong distaste toward or desire to avoid video functions on a DSLR (let alone actually using those functions). I think we can also safely say that nausea might describe the feeling when people watch a video shot with digital image stabilization (as opposed to the mechanical SR in the K5 series).....that was only half joking. (•;
As for capitalizing the word "aversion". It was for emphasis. If I were yelling I'd do the whole sentence in caps.

Steve, ignore the above if it annoys you too much and just accept my thanks for you congratulating me on my son. Children ARE a blessing and I'm blessed that he's our third. Sometimes too many blessings at once is exhausting. (3˝yr old daughter, 2yr old daughter, and now my newborn son!) It's a good exhaustion.

Mikesul, I didn't calculate or try to elicit a type of response. I was asking a genuine question. I read the forums every day and was away for two weeks because of having a baby and came back to what read to me like several posts angry about video "whiners". I didn't manage to catch the whining that brought this on.

You're a good guy but sometimes you're a crotchity bastard. Tell you what...next time I'm in Algonquin I'll bring you 25 bucks to offset all the trouble we "whiners" have caused. I haven't been since I moved from Guelph to Beijing. You can choose cash, beer or wine.

Don't worry, it didn't read as sarcasm. I'd say my fascination with video comes from the same reason as my fascination with photography. Conveying an emotion, telling a story, capturing beauty, capturing the decisive moment... seeing the light.
Contrary to what many on PF seem to want to believe, the fundamentals in making video are the same as in making photos. You're just adding the dimension of time in a new way. There's a reason films were first called "motion pictures".

Why the AVERSION to video?

To be a little more specific, I'm referring to two aspects of video.
1- controls while shooting (frame rate, shutter speed, manual exposure, etc...)
2- quality of final output. Does the video look good (same meaning as "does the picture look good?)

The K-5 did poorly on the first point. Without odd workarounds you couldn't select anything other than ISO and aperture. (However, as others have noted, the final output was very nice) Those controls improved slightly with the K-30 and K-3 but then they failed with the file output....poor compression, codecs... For those of you that shoot stills but not video, think jpegs made from 8bit RAW compared to 12 or 14bit.

This may sound like a rant, so please be prepared to forgive me if you're planning to read further. If you just want the final point, skip down to the bottom of my post.

I don't get the negativity toward video in Pentax land.

Before going further, let me be the first to admit I'm a faithful "fan" of Pentax. I have been with Pentax for about 15 years. Pentax was my first film SLR, my first digital P&S, my first DSLR, my first mirrorless (Q). (K1000, MX, MZ-50, 3 or 4 from the Optio S series, *istD, K10D, K-x, K-5, K-30, K-5iis, Q7)

I would love to say that Pentax could have been my first Full Frame as well, but I've already ventured there without Pentax's help. Which (whether you agree with me or not) keeps me in the "fan" category, but not quite the blind "fanboi". (borrowed or owned Nikon D7000, Canon Rebels, 60D, 7D, 5Dii, Panasonic GH3, GH4, Sony A55, A7s..... some of which I rather enjoyed)

Ok, back to the video rant... I'm first and foremost into photography more than videography. I get that many Pentax users started with film or pre-K-7 digital models (with CCD sensors) and didn't give a rip about video or didn't have it as an option. However, I think it's misleading when threads are started like "who here never, ever used video" so that people who don't can respond "I don't".
Quite a few people have said things like "take video out altogether because I'll never use it", or "if I wanted to do video i'd use a dedicated video camera".

While I can respect that different people have different needs/desires in their DSLR's and equipment, I don't quite get the aversion or misunderstanding with regard to having video capability on a Pentax camera (whether current APSC or future FF or mirrorless). Even though video isn't a component of photography, it IS a standard component of cameras and has been for a few years. I think it's similar to someone saying "I never use on camera flash. Please, Pentax, don't include it in future models". Or, "I can't think of a reason to shoot TAv, I didn't even know it was on the dial, I wish Pentax wouldn't waste resources on this".

What's my point?

1.- having video capabilities (albeit poorly implemented) hasn't degraded photographic capabilities on Pentax cameras so far

2.-with the exception of the dedicated video switch on the K-3, having video doesn't involve hardware differences. As far as I understand it is mostly about what the chip is capable of. Cutting video out completely won't have any significant hardware cost reduction. i.e.- you won't save money on your cameras if they cut video capabilities (one exception..see third point below)

3.- there MAY be R&D costs saved (but if you've ever used Pentax video so far you will agree they obviously haven't spent much money or manpower on video features)

4.- If Pentax wants to ever be competitive or profitable they need to include current and popular marketing gimmick features. It doesn't matter if those features are considered useless by many people... there are still many more people looking into their first "real camera" walking into WalMart, BestBuy, or dedicated camera stores and the employee will tout video as part of the feature set. We can't just market to old users like me or you. DPReview, CNet, and other sites also dock points from Pentax camera reviews consistently because of poor or lacking video features. Doesn't matter whether you or I respect those reviews, the noobs are being influenced by them.

Rant over... Thanks Pentax (Ricoh, Hoya, etc...) for making great cameras with fantastic features and outstanding photographic image quality. Please do a little better at video in the future, whether it's in APSC or mirrorless or full frame or medium format.
