I reckon you just cut the aperture tab of it and turn it into a stop down green button lens ;)

Yes there is hope!

They are really simple to service. But since you appear apprehensive, go find a broken SMC tak to practice with! The aperture mechanism if I remember correctly sits at the back, you only have to remove one combined element group and then you have access to it.

It's usually just a matter of taking the blades out, and cleaning them with grog, take your time, put it back together and BAM!

When you mean barely moving at all, even when the aperture is set to "M"

Cheers,

You can do it. :)

Yep, pretty much what Glenn said.

I had another funny issue tonight however, it would not fire my radio triggered flashes without the on-board flash itself being ejected and firing. :S Never had such an issue prior, and I only stumbled upon the solution in desperation looking for another light source.

He.

Well finally had some time to sit down and look at some of the images properly, even without SR being weird it was fine.

Again most of these with the M35 f2.8.

You would think one would get over looking at mountains, not so. Small climbs have you looking at peeks as if you where dropped from a helicopter.
Click for, yep a mountain

One could spend months looking at the changes in shape and texture.

Can't wait to go back.

Just lol at this thread in general :P

But since AF is programed to detect edges, it is certainly the fur with its confusing pattern that kills the AF. Grab a patch of contrast, eye, ear, dark patch on the tail... ah who em I kidding. F8, iso 128k s/1000 and spray :P

Spent a day walking the Key Summit trail (out near Milford Sound) Beautiful 6km~ walk up a hill to get wonderful views.

At the car park there I was with the DA* 16-50, DA* 50-135, and with the M35 f2.8 once more. After a bit of camera roulette, and packing the bag a couple of times whilst the misses was wearing sunscreen, I ended up once again, like I have all holiday, leaving the DA's in the car, attaching the M35 to the ye old K5, throw a polarising filter in the pocket and done.

And it was perfect. There really wasn't a vista where the 35mm wasn't wide enough. And forget about fast glass. The thing was set to f8, and its hyper-focal distance (4.5m, giving me Infinity down to 3m) all day. I merely adjusted the shutter a stop of two depending on what the clouds where doing.

It was a wonderful reminder that despite all the excitement and all the features we crave and carry on about, when it comes down to waking up a hill, less is more, and more then suitable.

The thing swang around my neck all day hitting trees, rocks, getting covered in dust, I might have been more careful with a DA* attached, the M35 gave me that freedom to just enjoy it. And the manual focus glass was just that little bit easy to focus since it was living at f8 all day. I was confident shooting my partner in front of me form the hip knowing it was going to capture the distance necessary.

Anyway I really enjoyed my walk up the hill with the faulting K5 (there are still a load of frames where the sensor seems to have been dancing around, but enough of the nice stuff to keep me happy) and the 80's M35 f2.8, and that's the point I suppose.

Yeah I gave that ago. I'm not getting an error in the system as it where. I mean, I don't think the software knows whats gong on / has no way to measure it.

It is an odd on, and in many ways I think I'd rather a "IT IS BROKEN" msg to flash once and a while so I know I'm just not going mad. But Alas.

It still might be a handy body for when I find myself in a mosh pit at a rock concert and framing isn't so critical. Ah! another post, another image is the rule! I'm now on a mission to bring everyone to NZ at least once. :P

Hi Glenn!

Your offer is very much appreciated. I've actually flown the coup and moved interstate (partner got a job in Sydney) but perhaps I still might be able to provide a loving home to this K5.

I haven't checked, but I suppose batteries and focus screens are different for the K3? I'm very happy with the K5, I was half keeping an eye out for a IIs, but can get over it for the images I chase :)

Speaking of chasing images, New Zealand is really really that pretty. You can't even do the dishes without being reminded at how lovely it is.

This is just outside the Homer Tunnel heading toward Milford Sound (Which is not actually a Sound but a Fjord, Sounds are formed by rain water cutting a V whilst Fjords are formed by Glaciers, well by frozen rivers picking up rocks and grinding them on the way to the ocean).

Anyway, the indigenous people called it Piopiotahi (translated to meaning "one bird"), thats probably a better name anyway.

Yes the place is incredible.

It truthfully has been a good little thing.

I'm actually holidaying in New Zealand at the moment, it has been out in the rain, salt, sun as it always has been, and it's been wonderful. I still smile when I see $$$$$ Can-ikon owners reach for their waterproof housings at the first grimace of a shower.

I'll have a look at the comp adjustment, the fault seems to inconsistent with orientation. Sometimes it's 15 degrees over to the left, sometimes the right, sometimes the bottom part of the image is cut, not always on the horizon. I seem to be able to replicate he error consistently with the camera tilted about 20 degrees upward however. Then testing with SR on or off proved the same randomness with results. But as I've hinted at It was known to be troublesome when i bought it, and occasionally, once a month or there about's it would need a gentle pat to active the SR system. So 5 years later, it's finally getting to the point where i may have to do something about it. That be a fair innings really :)

Now decisions decisions.

P.S.
New Zealand is just spectacular. We flew into Christchurch ad took the train over the hill to the west coast, and have then been travelling down it, into Queenstown, and now heading west to Milford Sounds. The entire place is crazy pretty.

I took the usual lenses (DA16-50, DA50-135, M35) and thought I'd be mashing between the two DA's. Turns out the M35 has recorded 99% of the adventure. It was at the point where I was trying to use the other DA's and it was silly. The extra weight really does make a difference. By day 3 the DA's stayed at the Hotel and I was much happier for it. Ah but it's always the case, and this account will be read and you too will take all your lenses next holiday because.. what if :P

Well switching the SR system off doesn't lock the sensor down, it just keeps magnetic consistency on the housing right to keep it "centred" right?

But yes it's as if the sensor is floating around somewhat. Shutter is at about 32k to give you some idea of it's firing, but that does only measure one component after all.

And to be totally transparent. It was purchased second hand knowing that the SR system got stuck off some times. That is you would give it a tap once in a while (every other week) to have it moving around again correctly, the SR light used to stay crossed out. So, I knew it was dicky 5 years ago, and I'ts only just now that it has turned into a problem.

So good stuff pentax :)

And yes Suppose I'll go shopping for a K5II :P

It's like the timing to the SR system and the shutter is off. Despite the camera being still, composing for say a nice horizon edge down the bottom of the image may result in the right corner to be dropped off some 15degrees.

Composing a shot with a bit of vertical tilt is the worst, its further chopping of about 5% of the bottom of the image as it re composes for me..

And this is with a variety of shutter speeds, doesn't seem to change it.

I bought my K5 second hand 5yrs ago? Has been faithfully by my side since. Have missed a beat. Just today I've noticed a reason issue with the SR system, it's playing up and giving me random frames, even with SR turned off. Things askew, horizons chopped off or missing completely, great things like that.

Anyway what a servent it's been.

Good on ya K5.

The Nikon F mount and Pentax K mount, are very similar. I used to just mount F Ai / Ais upside down turn it about 60%, there was enough grip on it.

Why however, well that's for you and you alone.

Main differences SMC Pentax M 50mm F1.7 and SMC Tak 55mm F1.8

I had a bad case of the LBA. I had a set of Super Tak's, SMC Taks, M's, K's, a bunch of Pentacon's (50mm f1.8 greatly underrated lens by the way), and the Helios, Zennit's, etc etc etc etc! The manual focus collection has been rationalized and what has survived?

-Tair 3, 300mm f4.5
-Super Tak 50mm f1.4
-K 55mm f1.8
-M 35mm f2.8

There is just something special about the 55mm f1.8. Well I preferred it to the 50mm M f1.7 because it is just that little bit tighter really.

for $35 enjoy the LBA!
