I have the same scanner and have used it for about 11 years for lots of things including scanning negatives (including medium format from y 645 and 6x7). It works but it's slow and limited. My research a few years ago identified the Epson V series as what I want to go to for an upgrade. Yet to pull the trigger on it though. IMHO you are looking in the right direction.

Safari trip lens advice

I was on Safari in Tanzania last August. I took both my K-1 and K-3. My longest lens was my DFA 150-450 and it wasn't long enough. Actually, half way through the trip it broke in half...and I was forced to fall back to my DFA 70-200 with a 1.5x teleconverter, but that's another story. When I was on Safari, we were in Land Cruisers shooting from their open tops. There was no place to use a tripod or monopod on Safari. While you can get very close to lions, like this guy _IMG1358 by Tim Morgan, on Flickr, but others like this leopard are much farther away. _IMG1407 by Tim Morgan, on Flickr. But you need long lenses and 300mm IMHO is not long enough. Where this really was apparent was for the rare and shy black rhino, taken here with my K-1 and DFA 70-200, that guy was about a half mile away. _IMG2058 by Tim Morgan, on Flickr

K-5 spontaneous photos, black screen

Yes, that is the fully charged battery issue with the K-5. Their was a fix which required some board inside to be changed as I recall. I have the problem on mine but just developed the habit of not fully charging my battery or burning some of it off with video on for a bit. I could also have this happen when the air temp is high 90's or 100's. Oh, and the fix was several hundred dollars.

This is a problem with the camera but personally I learned to just manage it. Although I've moved on from my K-5 to my K-3 and now K-1, I still occasionally use my K-5 and revere it for the level that it raised my photography.

If you want to see this score you can use the Scout app in a web browser. Scout: Find your photos in Flickr's Explore pages.

Also, I got no shots yesterday and am getting sick today. I may still try but I think I'm done for the month. Thanks to all who commented on my work, it's been a very interesting month for sure. I'm out for April but will try to return when I can down the line.

Another solution is to get a Pelican box (with foam inside) to protect your gear. I have one I use for my sea kayak: 1) it is water proof, 2) it floats, and 3) when the foam is configured, you can get a lot of protection from shock as well. They come in a lot of sizes too. Check it out. Protective Hard Cases. USA Made. | Pelican

Two of my spring images from yesterday got explored. Two in one day! Amazing. That makes 4 for the month. Personal best for sure. Weird though as I really haven't seen any of those shots as really that good. Hmmm...going to have to rethink that.

Need help choosing between Pentax D-FA 15-30mm and Pentax 31mm Ltd

for the stated purpose, the FA 31 would be the choice. The DFA 15-30 is such a different lens and IMHO would not be the lens for the purpose stated. Might even consider the FA 43 limited too. Cheaper.

What is the purpose of TAv Mode on Pentax DSLRS?

Not bothering to do a search right now on the site, I will say that the Tav (kinda unique to Pentax as I recall), is discussed on this site somewhere. It's kinda brilliant too. For me, I find it particularly helpful when shooting with flash, that's not the only thing but it's the first thing that comes to mind. The easiest way to understand it - and all the shooting modes - is to shoot with them a bit. It's like Sv mode, you could as the same question but for me Sv is what I go to at night when what I want to control is ISO. For Tav, allows me to adjust shutter or f-stop depending on the situation, it's just faster than switching from Tv to Av or back. YMMV

Explore...continues to puzzle me, my Monday shot got explored yesterday. That's two this month - a personal best for me. I suspect - and have for a while - that this group and the SIC group helps ignite images in to explore notice. So, thanks for your views/comments/favs etc.

Kerrick James is one as has been mentioned. I'm hopefully doing a slot canyon workshop (Utah/Arizona) with him in May. My communications with him have been fantastic. Sounds like a great guy.
