I can only take a spider picture with a 500mm at LEAST! :D

The next few are just testing the SEL55210 with a Sony VCLDH1758 TC. It was done on a monopod so pardon that they are not the sharpest ever.
All the following shots are cropped.

Well, to someone like me starting I think it would be great. I can give you an analogy with singers. I am a singer (have done it professionally). When I started I was copying this or that singer that I admire...that served as a guide line to work with, then with experience I started giving it my own style and flavor to the performances.
. So I think such a blog would be very nice. :-)

This is fantastic information!
I will play with the RAW file to see if I can achieve similar results following your steps.
Believe, this helps me a LOT to understand how a photographer sees a scene or image and how to make it better.
That day I was just walking around trying to make my brain and eyes work together to find a good subject and how to compose it correctly but many of the things you mentioned I didnt even think about , it just "seemed" right to me. I have so much to learn! :D
No need to apologize, this is a great help to me and I appreciate your detailed explanation. :)

Are you getting one of the Sigmas on sale for the NEX? I wanted too but then I saw some shots from the upcoming Sony 35mm and was sold on that one so I am getting the SEL55210 first then the 35mm Sony and that with my current Kit 16-50mm and the Pentax 50mm 1.7 should have me covered for now. :)
Nice shots btw. I need to work on more legacy lenses since I got the Pentax adapter I guess. :)

Well , the opinions are mixes so far. I really like it for its size and based on the fact that the camera fixes the lenses shortcomings on the NEX-6. Also, the profile just became available for Lightroom so to me is a win win situation with that lens and the IQ/Portability ratio.

Thanks! I love that application with the Tilt option, makes it so easy to take cool pictures! :)
Yeah I just downloaded the profile for the 16-50 lens for Lightroom. I wish DXO comes out with one too soon. :)

Christine Tham. are your pictures processes from RAW files or JPGs untouched?

This is a quick panorama I did and a couple of miniatures. Directly from the camera and of course, look much better in full size but still it was my first time shooting with it! :)

Settings recommendation for a figure skating show please

Ok unfortunately because unlike on a Hockey, for this show the lights where dim and they used a spot light (some times and mostly not done right...low budget local production) my lenses where not up to par. Only the 50mm was fast enough but I needed something much closer.
So I sat on a different location and got more video instead. For the Nationals Competition it would be easier as I was fine when they were rehearsing with the lights on...its only when lights went off that the problem began. I read about it and it seems the lense that I want is way above my possibilities for now.
Then again,....this is like the only show they do a year so is not crucial. If it was something I will be doing more often then I would save the cash :-)
When I take pics of the Nationals Competition I will post them here. :-)

Thanks both for the comments. It was indeed a frustrating night for pictures. I have done some nationals competition before but lighting we a lot better since it was not a show with spot lights etc. Tonight the story was sad..low light levels and as you mentioned, the only lens I have cable to work with that is my 50mm but it does not get me close to the action. I indeed need a 100mm fast lenses or so for this type of event since the low light level just cannot be handle by my zoom lenses. At least I had my Canon HF M40 which rocks with low light and captured everything beautifully on video. Sadly the still pictures it takes sucks but that is the trade off for its great video performance so no complaints from me for the trade off.

I am going tomorrow again so I will try again at 1600 ISO this time as it seems to be my only hope. I have a better idea of the show now so I know better when I can switch to different lenses. We shall see.
Thanks guys :-)

Hi!
I am attending the Nutcracker on Ice tonight (local ice rink) and would like to get some tips on how to get the best out of my K20D for this event.
Thanks

Why thank you so much!
I did get a lot of compliments from friends (well they are friends so I guess that is a biased opinion lol), from all the pics I took on that session. It was a test session as you can see there is not even a background just the wall.
There is a lot to learn but I really like it which is why I decided to setup this small room. I might even move to a much bigger one in the basement eventually.
Now I need to get a better subject than myself to shoot at. Time to go by the ice rink and talk to my figure skater friends! LOL
The lights do heat up the room fast so I am seriously considering buying a kit because right now is getting cold outside but when winter is gone, I cant imagine lasting in there with those lights too long :D
Is a flash a must if I am shooting with lights already? I read comments about using a flash and it confuses me if it is in a room with the lights already set up correctly.

Regards

I just see the lamps being just 45W so that kind of seems to low but then again...what do I know lol

First thanks for the quick reply!
Second, I got a much smaller single light but it is only 250W compared to the 500W on the tripod. I tried it but it seems not to be powerful enough to do the job.
You think I should get a 500 instead?
I am thinking on returning those lights and getting the other one which is taller if that helps then.
Thanks again
