K-3 for sports?

I got my Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 HSM II back. The firmware was updated, but it is still hunting on the K-3 (both my copy and a copy at the store). I was able to return the camera to the store, but only for store credit. I will be sticking with my K-5 for now, but I doubt I will be buying another Pentax DSLR camera in the future.

Hopefully it doesn't come to that, but if sending it in to Sigma doesn't fix the auto focus, I may be selling the K-3 and battery grip. No sense keeping a $1,000 camera around that doesn't get used.

I was comparing the lens on my new K-3 against my K-5, with the same settings and in the same situation. I also compared the auto focus with my 18-135mm DC lens, again with same/similar settings, and there's definitely a problem with it hunting. Even in the store it did the same thing, and I tried the Pentax 18-270mm and it didn't have a problem with the lighting. I hope there's a firmware fix, otherwise I wasted money buying the K-3 as I use the 70-200mm 80-90% of the time. I'll update this thread when I hear anything.

I picked up a K-3 and my Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG HSM II is hunting during auto focus. I'm sending it in for a firmware updrade, but I was wondering if you had any issues with this?

When I try to auto focus the lens will go slightly past, then back slightly the other way, before locking in on focus. I tested it out on another K-3 in the store, and it did the same thing. The K-3 is quick to focus with Pentax 18-135mm, so I'm hoping a firmware upgrade fixes it.

I was looking at the Pentax K-3 Prestige Edition, which is about $1,200 Canadian. It's basically the same price as buying the K-3 and battery grip separately. With the current Canadian to US exchange rate, $799 is $1,000.

What other forum/posts would you be talking about?

I did read Adam's review, but the lens used was the Pentax 60-250mm F4, which I don't own and I don't think is supposed to be very fast focusing. I'm interested if anybody has the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 HSM lens, and if they can compare the K-3 to the K-5 (original).

I know this is an old post, but I thought it would be best to keep the sports/auto-focus conversation in one spot, so can anybody give their thoughts on any improvements in the auto-focus (speed/accuracy) for the K-3 compared to the K-5. I've got the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8, which I use to shoot ice hockey. Typically I'm shooting at f2.8, 1/500 or 640, and ISO between 1600 and 3200. I've been contemplating buying the K-3, but I'm not sure about spending another $1,000.

Anybody have any experiences with the K-3/Sigma 70-200mm combination they'd like to share?

If you don't have to shoot below f4.0, then the Pentax is wider and has more reach. But, if you have to shoot below f4.0, then your only choices would be the Tamron or the Sigma. I have the older non OS Sigma and have been very happy with it. I'm not a big fan of the noise that the screw drive lenses make, but the K-3 is supposed to be quieter in that respect.

I have the older 70-200mm f2.8 Macro HSM II model.

How would you guys compare the autofocus speed and accuracy compared to the K-5 (with this lens or even in general)? Do you feel your getting less missed shots and more keepers?

Wondering if anybody with a K-3 also has the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 HSM lens, and what your experiences have been with that camera and lens combination? I have a K-5 with that lens and, while I like the combination, I wish the K-5 would have more accurate AF (mainly shoot my daughters hockey with that lens). I find I have to delete more images that I think I should because the K-5 missed focus. Any info from K-5 to K-3 upgraders would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I've been waiting for an updated 55-300mm, but only if it was silent focusing and not screw drive, so I agree it's not much of an announcement for me either.

Looking at the price of the competing lenses, I think Pentax should be able to make a 70-200mm, that doesn't have image stabilization, and sell it for $1,400 ($1,200 is probably wishful thinking). The closest competitor would be the Canon non IS lens, which is an L series lens, and it's sold for $1,449. The Sigma and Tamron lenses both have image stabilization, except the older style Tamron and discontinued Sigma.

- Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L USM (non IS) $1,449
- Nikon AF 80-200mm f2.8 ED (non VR) $999
- Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM $1,399
- Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX DG APO HSM (non OS) used to be $899 new
- Tamron SP 70-200mm f2.8 Di VC USD $1,499
- Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 Di LD (non VC) $769

I'd like to see Pentax use the new Sony 20.1MP sensor, unless the image quality/low light ability is worse than the 24.3MP sensor. Hopefully the smaller file sizes will reduce the buffer issues the D7100 is experiencing when shooting RAW, and allow higher fps in burst mode.

I for one will not be upgrading my K-5 to the K-5 II. I will wait until they come out with the new APC camera (K-3?), and if they don't come out with one by this fall I will take a very serious look at switching to either a Nikon D7100 or the Canon 60D replacement.

Top two on my wish list for Pentax right now is a new flagship APC camera very similar to the K-5 but with faster, more accurate/reliable autofocus and a 70-200mm f2.8 lens (I mostly use my K-5 for ice hockey pictures). I already own the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8, but I'd buy a Pentax one if they can make one with as fast AF, better optical quality and a price less than $1,400 (hopefully closer to $1,200).

I would prefer a new 16MP sensor with better high ISO performance than a 24MP sensor that performs the same as the old 16MP sensor. Also, I would think a 24MP sensor will require a faster processor just to keep the performance of the camera the same as the K-5, and this is an area I'd also like to see improved i.e. no more delays when deleting images or when going into preview mode.

In all, I'm pretty happy with my K-5, but in addition to the above, I'd like to see faster more accurate autofocus, autofocus tracking, faster focusing lenses, and a more complete lens lineup. I love the way the K-5 feels in my hands compared to the Nikon D7000 and Canon 7D, so I hope they don't change the body too much, and also keep compatibility with the current battery grip.

I don't know that I would own them all, but I'd like the option of picking from the following list.

16-50mm f2.8 DC/SDMII WR (newer/faster autofocus)
18-200mm f3.5-5.6 DC WR
24-80mm f2.8 DC/SDMII WR
35mm f1.8 DC WR (comparable to Nikon AF-S 35mm f1.8, Sony 35mm f.18 SAM)
50mm f1.8 DC WR (comparable to Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.8, Sony 50mm f.18 SAM, Canon EF 50mm f1.8)
50-135mm f2.8 DC/SDMII WR (newer/faster autofocus)
70-200mm f2.8 DC/SDMII WR (comparable to Canon or Nikon 70-200 f2.8)
55-300mm f4.0-5.6 DC WR (update to existing 55-300mm)
135-400mm f4.0-5.6 DC WR (similar to Canon 100-400mm or Nikon 80-400mm) (200-400 f4.0 would be nice but would be expensive)

I figure the camera bodies are WR, so the lenses should be WR also.

I'm hoping the DA lenses, or most of them, get the DC motor. SDM II for any higher ends lenses would be nice too. I'm just not a fan of the noisy, in my opinion anyway, screw focus lenses and will never buy another one.

New Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC USD for Canon, Nikon and Sony (the Sony mount does not include VC). Looks like Tamron isn't releasing any new lenses in Pentax mounts.

Another reason why I don't like this trend of Tamron not building Pentax mounts of their new lenses, is if they decide to update some of their existing lenses with the USD autofocus motor (specifically the 70-200 f2.8 and the 28-75 f2.8). I would be really interested in those two lenses (if they ever get made).

I posted this in another thread, but it's applicable here also.

I sent an email to Tamron regarding their 18-270 PZD and 70-300 USD lenses, and the reply I received was,

"Unfortunately I have not heard of any intentions to release either of those lenses with Pentax mounts. No announcement of intentions for future Pentax lenses have been made at this time."

There are Sony versions of these two lenses, as well as the 60mm F2 macro lens. From Tamron's USA site:

"* Image stabilization is an integrated function of Sony Alpha-mount DSLRs and would conflict lens-based IS. Therefore, the Tamron VC function is omitted from models manufactured for Sony Alpha-mount DSLRs."

Personally, I'm intersted in both of these lenses being available in the Pentax mount. Mostly the 70-300 as I am not a fan of the Pentax 55-300 (noisy autofocus).

Pentax version of the Sony a77 coming ?

I agree that the high ISO shots, in the hands on preview, don't look very good. I don't personally see a need to go with a 24mp sensor, especially if it's going to negatively affect high ISO performance. I'd rather they stay at 16 to 18mp and work on improving high ISO capabilities.

To me the A77 seems big, and with the grip it seems downright huge. I'll be sticking with my K-5 for now, but I'm definitely interested in seeing how the A77 compares against the current competition (K-5, D7000, 7D).

Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM vs Pentax FA* 80-200mm F2.8?

I've never used, or have even seen, the Pentax 80-200, but I'm happy with the build quality of the Sigma 70-200 HSM non-OS, especially considering the price compared to the used Pentax lens (~$1,500 to $1,800).

I've also never experienced much in the way of AF hunting, but I'm not sure if you would consider a hockey arena low light or not. I have had some misfocused shots, but that is to be expected taking hockey pictures. I don't recall very many misfocused shots when taking softball pictures. Again, I've never used the Pentax, so I can't compare the two.

For what I need (amatuer/family photography), the Sigma is doing a fine job. However, I would buy a Pentax 70-200 f2.8 if they made one and sold it for what Canon sells their 70-200 f2.8 non-IS lens for (~$1,400).

Here's some reviews on the Sigma. They don't compare it against the Pentax 80-200mm, but they may help.
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Interchangeable Lens Review
Sigma 70-200 mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM review - Introduction - Lenstip.com

I have the older non OS version, and I really like it (I also shoot softball, and ice hockey, with it). From what I've read, the new OS version is supposed to be a better lens than the older Sigma.

Until Pentax makes a newer 80-200mm f2.8, the Sigma is probably the best choice there is. And yes I know the 50-135mm is the 70-200mm equivalent, but it obviously does not have the same reach.
