Pentax K1 mk 2 lens question Pentax 15-30mm

Wonderpana holder for Tamron 15-30 works. And YES, AVOID the non-coated CPL. I had a complete Wonderpana set for Canon TS-E 17mm lens and had to really hunt for multicoated filter.

This time in red!

1. Tower Of Power with a thunderstorm looming on the background. High ISO3200 mixed with long exposure ISO100 frame to capture the clouds better.

2. Serene Winter-Summer Hybrid Wonderland. Very long ISO100 exposure.

Thank you for your feedback! Yes, they are infrared images taken with filters which also pass some "unwanted" colors thru. First one 850nm Neewer filter and the 2nd is 760nm Neewer filter. Channel swap made in Photoshop.

Best wide-angle lens for K-1?

15-30 WR, Like its Tamron cousin, works best in 15-20mm range, the rest of the zoom range is only nice-to-have feature. I used to have one but it died along with K-1 thanks to user error few years ago. Mostly missing the 15mm end. My current Irix 15mm does not cut it against the 15-30.

What are your thoughts on this ND 100000 Filter?

I would pick standard ND400-ND1000 filter and use Pentax in-camera multiexposure blending to get one RAW file. Just do not go over 256 exposures per shot, colors fall apart in the scene.

I recently tried Samyang 24mm f/1.4 for infrared and while it did not work there very well I noticed it easily surpasses 15-30 when stopped down to f/5.6 or so in standard color photography.

There are however very bad copies out there.

It really depends on the lens. Zeiss Distagon 28/2 for example has focusing field which is almost a sphere wide open. It allows to pull spherical subject fully into focus but blurring everything else outside the sphere. Stopping down flattens the field and the lens start to lose its "drawing qualities" - 3D-effect if you like to call it that. Some Zeiss lenses are similar except, well, Planar-macros. Focused area cannot always be just measured like |----| thick wall which turns into |------------------------------| stopped down.

Example of Zeiss 28/2 spherical focusing field wide open:

Okay, thanks. It is kind of weird that most IR filters do not have coatings. After all, they are used mostly outdoors and would benefit from it.

Just focus to infinity and about a meter or so with 15-30 @f/8, load those two frames to focus stacker and be done with it. Or switch to Canon and get 17mm T-SE. Both tactis give superior result.

They are somewhat usable with film where proper sharpness does not really exist, except maybe technical pan films.

Focus stacking is the way to go.

I stopped using guesswork methods when proper liveview was available.

How are the coatings (if any)?

I picked 720nm converted Fuji X-A3 from ebay. Safe option to start a "new hobby". Pentax glass fits with adapter.

Pentax FA28mm f/2.8 SUCCESS. This is priceless. No hotspot even stopped down to f/16. And this is sharp copy. Cheapest wide angle I have tested for IR and the only one that worked.

FA28mm AL @ F/8 and 120 seconds. Biggest Tombstone in Finland. Neewer 850nm IR Filter and channel swap in Photoshop.

Only way I have managed to get line or grid-patterns with PS is a situation where light changes during the exposure. Motion effects are different beast and very clear to spot (RawTherapee handles them fine). So far, my own results have been similar with K-1, K-1mk2 and KP.

Long exposure cancels out some light changes. For example 30 second PS exposure in ~stable candlelight results in mostly good outcome. But too short exposure in the same situation, like 5-10 seconds, gives 4 subframes with varied light levels -> grid pattern. Flickering flame is always a mess.

Hmm. Okay. This Heliopan RG780 (digital slim) is optically different (not just the cut-off point) to Hoya R72. R72 gives a clear hotspot at f/4 with 35mm Samyang. Heliopan reaches the same intensity at f/8 and flares a quite a LOT less. Now I can use the Samyang @ f/5.6 compared to f/2.8 or so with R72.

Another view on zooms: Zooms are collection of different perspectives. Primary function of a zoom is not to stand still and, well, zoom at a distant point. The primary function is instead selecting a perspective, like how much background you want in the photo with your subject, and using it to get the shot. This is my 2 cents on the matter.

Majority uses a cellphone to take photographs. All types of DSLR/MILC lenses are only a fraction of the number of sold cameras in cellphones. In the near future, the only reason to use a separate "real" camera is to shoot something with specialist lenses like T/S or super telephoto primes.

I decided to try my luck with FA28mm 2.8 AL next and found a used one. I am returning the 31mm Limited lens as it has lens wobble issue. Not the fault of the lens but the shop instead which sold it "in perfect condition".
