Thematic Bad Weather Makes Good Pictures

NO idea what camera was used but this shot will terrify anyone who has ever been to St. John's, Newfoundland. My daughter noticed it on the Twitplace. I have NEVER seen or heard of a time when it was suicidal to enter St. John's harbor. But the recent gigantic winter hurricane-ish-like storm with winds up to 170kph raised some rather incredible seas. As an amateur sailor I certainly find this pic-even with its technical flaws--to be absolutely personally terrifying.

For reference, the old barracks at the top of the hill to the left is at about 100m above sea level.

I do not see a K-70 photos thread like there is on the K30/K50 forum so I thought I'd start it. Here are some pics from a hike today in Newfoundland. As season is getting late, lighting is fairly dark and used ISO 320 on all shots. Lens is 55-300 PLM RE. xposted to 55-300 opinions thread. (click pics for exif info)

How many lenses do you take when out photographing?

K-70 APSC user here. Typically take 16-85 and 55-300 PLM. If out at golden hour will throw the 40 Ltd in my pocket as well as it renders those colours beautifully and adds no real weight. If it's an out and back hike, I often mount 55-300 going out and switch to the 16-85 on the way back to pick up details spotted on the way out.

Have a number of other lenses I often use including the Sigma 10-20 (slow version) and 100mm Pentax macro but don't typically hike with them.

Lenses and temperature and the 70-210

Re. 43C...I've taken pics at 40C+ with my Pentax systems just fine in TX. Away from coast so not really high humidity. Didn't notice anything. Never really high humidity though. No idea how much humidity exists in Melbourne but that might would worry me if it were New Orleans-ish high along with such high temps.

My worry where I normally live/shoot is that in Newfoundland is it is VERY humid and can get cold. I have found conditions where both my Sigma AF lenses--17-50mm f2.8 and the slow 10-20mm--fail. Both fail at around -5 to -10C in high humidity*.

The camera itself--k-70--and the Pentax lenses I use--primarily my 16-85mm, 55-300mm PLM, 100mm macro, and 40mm Ltd.--have never failed in weather I've been out in though it never does not get all that far below -15C out here on the Avalon and the very coldest days are usually low humidity in any case.

*They wake up later when warm so something must be binding or needing more power or something. Never have worked to diagnose exactly.

The PLM might not match the highest grade professional lenses around, and it definitely is slow if you really truly need low f-stops (but really this is no longer so big a deal these days with modern hi-ISO-capable sensors), but it is very, very good.

On the water in my boat it is almost always the lens I mount for targets-of-opportunity.

Thematic The Earth's Bones

Not exactly Earth's bones...but certainly Earth's exoskeletons!... Walnut Creek Park, Austin Texas.

Ammonite is, I think, Cretaceous in that area. As are the clams/mussels(?). Ammonite is dinner plate size.

Interestingly, this is where I also found a Pentaxian with a K-7 from California. 2 great finds!

Halftime commercials were boring. Picked up camera and took this with my 16-85 on a K-70. F4.5, 53mm, ISO 3200, 1/25 sec. Hand held but note the twitch in the hindleg.

Just fooling around while watching football, but this really shows the capabilities of the K70/16-85mm combo. ISO3200, 1/25sec, handheld, stabilization on.

at higher res.

Never ceases to amaze me what a modern camera is capable of.

With a K-70 and moderate care you can get as long as 1/10 sec at medium focal lengths easily. With a lot of care and good bodily bracing--like adapted target shooting techniques--I've gotten good results as low as 1/5 sec. With a modern camera this will get you pics in any situation you ought to be walking around in.

Here is one example I took just a few days ago testing out this very point just for the hell of it during a lull in a football game...

This is taken handheld at 1/25sec and ISO 3200. FL was 53mm on the 16-85mm zoom. This was after sunset and so the room was quite dark with just a desk lamp providing light for the whole room on that side and a TV on the other side of the room.

Another older pic showing how the SMC 40 Ltd renders colors. K-70. This was a hazy, somewhat dreary, cold March day...

I'd probably process it a bit differently now to further dehaze.
