Here is one with the screw mount, manual focus, preset Macro-Takumar f4.0 50mm on my K10D. The positive side of this self isolating is that I am getting to use some of my old Takumar lenses. (X posted)

The 18-55 kit lens is a great little lens, although not very fast (aperture wise). As long as you have decent light, it will produce good results.
Here's a recently re-edited photo that I originally shot shortly after first buying my K10D, and this was with the older first version of the 18-55. The image was originally shot as a color jpeg. I cropped it slightly and converted to B&W in Ps.

Sunrise this morning from my back door. K10D and DA 18-55mm WR.
I am glad that I took it while I could because 10 minutes later it was raining.

Nice work, Dave. But I think a well placed golf ball in the foreground would have really made the shot! :D

I hadn't really used my K10D since I bought my K-01 in 2012. For one reason or another, I have spent most of the past few weeks going through my old digital photos and playing around with the RAW files in Adobe Camera Raw. I have looked at RAW files from nearly 10 different cameras, and keep coming back to the files from the K10D. Sure the K-01 and its 16mp sensor is phenomenal, especially if you need higher ISO, but the CCD sensor in K10D is IMO something special.
Because I spent all that time looking through my K10D images, I decided to dig it out, I finally managed to get into the debug mode and adjust the AF, and I have been trying to get out and shoot with it more. It's a superb camera, and I think very underrated.

This one from yesterday,

Limiteds - DA 21 or DA 70 as my next lens? As a treat to myself...

If you get better results from the kit 18-55mm than with DA Limited lenses then you either had the bad luck to get bad copies of those Limiteds or you're doing something wrong. Probably the former because if you can manage to get good results with the kit lens then there's no reason why you wouldn't get the same from any modern lens.

Another vote for the 21!!! It is my most used Limited and I have the 15/21/35/40/70 family. For portraits to 70 is magical. If I could only keep one of these it would be the HD DA 21. It's a wide-normal on APS-C.

I'm enjoying my recent purchase of the HD DA 21. It's so stealthy it makes a great walk around town lens.

The main weakness of the DA70 Limited from my viewpoint is its long minimum focus distance (70 cm), so it is no replacement for the 100 wr macro.

Further to my earlier comments, and on reflection after reading other people's comments, there are times when the 21 is very useful. A few months ago I went on a night prison tour and the wider aperture was a treat as was the small size. I have posted in the DA limited club thread the images from this tour. I could not have done these with the zoom other than with a tripod so yes, they are worth having - probably will not sell mine.

This is not a person I would ever take lens advice from or recommend to anyone else in that lenses I get great images with he is disappointed with. Clearly my shooting styles and his are so different as to mean anything that worked for him would probably not work for me, to the point I wonder if his shooting style entails turning off shake reduction and jumping off bridges while shooting.

I tried checking out his images but I can't find any.
As such I have no idea if he has a clue what he's talking about.

Here are a few examples of starbursts. To me that's one of the main perks of the SMC 21:

Even when the scene does not yield starbursts, it creates a wonderful glow around light sources:

Looking at those images makes me wonder why I sold mine...

Wait, what?

That review, sad to say, was done with a suboptimal lens. It does not showcase what the 40 LTD is capable of.

Couldn't agree more. What I didn't mention in my earlier comment is that the overwhelming majority of my shots are landscape/nature/adventure and so I prefer the 70 even without considering portraits at all. I love short (and even longer) telephoto landscapes and the 70 is probably one of the reasons why.

In a less charitable moment, I might have thought this was trolling :hmm: At the very least, it's markedly different from the view most owners have - and when there's an outlying opinion such as this, so far outside that of the majority, we have to question why.

Interestingly, the DA35 f/2.4 has an almost equal number of fans and detractors here on the forums. I really like it - it used to be one of my favourites, in fact. I'm not sure I'd call it one of the best lenses there is, though. But, then, these things are highly subjective, aren't they?

And here we get into the real "meat and potatoes" of the matter. I own the HD DA40 Limited, and whilst it's not my favourite of the DA Limiteds, I consider it to be a very good pancake lens - and I have some pretty nice glass across two different platforms. Mine is sharp at all apertures, but especially good from f/4. Look at the rest of the reviews, and you'll see most folks think it's great. So I have to wonder why yours isn't. Do you have an example photo or two that you could post, complete with EXIF data?

You clearly had a bad copy of the DA21, pure and simple - especially if your 18-55 MkII gives better results. I sold my 18-55 MkII some time ago - it's a decent-enough kit lens, for sure, but doesn't come close to any of the DA Limiteds at the same focal lengths, assuming the lenses tested are performing correctly. The only time my DA21 does not "give a good picture" is if I screw up as the photographer. Seriously, it's one of my favourite lenses.

To demonstrate what I mean, as well as providing a quick example of rendering for the OP, how about a photo of a cat? :) I took this just now with my K-3, because I had to convince myself I wasn't imagining how nicely the DA21 renders. We all know that a good cat photo proves whether a lens is decent or not  Well, this photo isn't very good, but it has a cat in it, and it serves a purpose :D The second image is a 100% crop from the original. A few things I'd draw attention to that I find pleasing... Firstly, sharpness - look at the definition of the eye's iris slit, and the small hairs directly below the eye that are on the focal plane. This was shot wide open. It gets sharper between f/4 - 5.6. Secondly, note the transition from in-focus to out-of-focus on the fur - whilst not buttery smooth as with some lenses, the transition is never busy. Lastly, out of focus rendering - the leaves outside the window.

Again, I have to wonder, since the DA40 and 21 Limited are so popular amongst most of us (some of whom - unlike me - are very accomplished and demanding photographers), why you're not getting the results you should be from yours. Or is it simply a personal taste thing?

I missed your thread, until now.

I'm in the 21 camp, just for the reason, I like travelling with the 55-300 PLM and the 21 is a great "you won't even know it's there" wide end kind of lens to switch to if needed.
It is the only lens that I purchased (between 2010 and 2012) that still spends significant time in my camera bag.
It's not the absolute sharpest, but it renders great.

If you have an FF in your future, I might consider the 40XS instead.

Doing some more looking around... it looks as if I did get an amazing deal.
SMC is generally low 200 and HD high 200 as you say.

I posted in the 'Wanted' section and had a few people PM me selling ones. One HD was 200 and another was 230, so I just presumed that was the going price... I guess your mileage may vary...

As far as HD vs SMC, I'm not sure I've seen a lot of difference in forum shots, but I'm not really paying attention half the time... But I like the rendering mine (HD as you said) gives, and I can tell you it's not PP as I am completely clueless when it comes to that... mine are all just straight out of camera.

As far as cost, I got mine for 200 USD. Pretty good deal, but can be found if you hunt around and don't mind waiting a bit.

As I said earlier, it's a (almost) perfect walk around lens for most subjects, landscapes, street, even portraits (and they almost give a '3d' pop with the separation wide open and focused close). I'm also planning on doing some astro with it, if the weather ever clears up...
