The Squirrel Mafia's new & improved RawTherapee thread!

Challenge accepted. Hahaha! :p

It's the best that I could do for now. The NIK one seems to have the color a bit smeared. The one I did in RawTherapee has less color smear, but comes with the slight cost of keeping a bit of chroma noise. That link has the image, the PP3 file, & the dcp file I used, so you can load it if you don't have it installed.

November 27 will reveal the status of Pentax. We probably won't hear anything about Pentax around then either. Hahaha! :p

K-70 vs K-S2 at 6400 and 12800?

The K-70 does a bit better at ISO 12800 than the K-S2. It's not like a massive leap, but after comparing lots of RAW files from Imaging-Resource & DPR, you can definitely see the the K-70 has better IQ. The KP is the one that really pulls ahead. That one is very usable at ISO 25600. The K-70 starts to fall apart there.

UPDATE!

And here are the new PP3 files. These have some new NR settings. Previously, as the ISO got higher, the colors tended to "smear" a bit. These new ones have far less color "smearing", especially the aggressive PP3 files. The zip files contain everything you need.

There are some PP3 files in the TSM - PP3 Optional folder that require the installation of the DCP files located in the zip. The Pentax Bright, Landscape, Natural, Portrait, & Vibrant PP3 files will not work unless you install those DCP files in the correct place or you edit the PP3 file with your own location.

Have fun!

UPDATE!

RawTherapee 5.7 has been released.

I'll get around to making a new build on my Google Drive & uploading some recent PP3 files that I've been messing with. They have some new NR settings that have less color smearing. I'll post back when I do.

Have fun!

Color accuracy?

This is probably the easiest thing to do with the closest results. If you use PDCU5, selecting the Natural color tone will do the same for your RAW files. If processing with another program, use the Natural DCP file from either the 645Z, K-1, K-1 Mark II, or the K-3II that you'll find in the Adobe DNG Converter. You'll have to figure out the settings in your RAW program to use them.

Very interesting camera, especially if it does come with IBIS. I'm definitely not their target audience for that camera, though. Too much money. Hahaha!

Makes me wonder if Nikon will add IBIS to any of the very few upcoming DSLR cameras. I remember seeing a rumor about future Nikon DSLRs possibly having IBIS. Hmmm.....

Question for "Raw Therapee" users

Go to the following folder:

C:\Users\\AppData\Local

This is a hidden folder, so you might have to turn on the hidden folder option. Look for a RawTherapee folder & then move that folder to the desktop for now. It basically contains all your RawTherapee settings & a cache.

Now start RawTherapee. It's going to start up like a brand new installation with your settings totally reset to default. See how long it takes to boot & how long it takes to move the slider. If it's much faster, then all is good. Close RawTherapee & copy the "options" file inside that RawTherapee folder on your desktop back into the new RawTherapee folder in the AppData\Local to get back your previous settings. It all should be good after that. If not, something else major is going on.

You can also visit the RawTherapee forum & see if you can get some help there.

I don't think you can open them with anything outside of some proprietary Canon software at them moment. I have the most recent RawTherapee 5.6-268 dev instaled on my machine. My guess is that 5.7 will open them up.

The camera looks kind of disappointing. There were several hoping for much improved ergonomics & more flagship features, but either Sony is going to reserve that for the FF E-mount cameras or they're still working on a top-secret mini-a9, which I kind of doubt. Who knows, but there are many that are upset. Lots of complains already at SonyAlpha Rumors & DPR forum. Hahaha! :p

^ Start by setting up the LCP settings in RawTherapee & saving it as a PP3 file. Then go to that PP3 file & look for [LensProfile] setting. Copy the settings, erase everything in that PP3 file, & then paste the [LensProfile] settings in it. You'll have to put that PP3 file where RawTherapee picks it up. Then you create a dynamic profile setting with that PP3 file in the preferences area. There's an option to type in the lens name so that it recognizes the lens & automatically applies the PP3. I think you'll have to type in the exact lens name that appears in the quick info to get it to work. Then it should automatically apply the LCP every single time when the lens is detected.

UPDATE!

I have attached some new PP3 files. They're all the same as previous, with the exception of some new "Pentax" PP3 files found in the TSM - PP3 Optional folder & some new DCP files that use them. There are 3 folders inside the zip files & the how to install directions are in there.

Those "Pentax" PP3 files have the same color settings in your Pentax cameras. Yes. The basic Bright, Landscape, Natural, Portrait, & Vibrant settings are in there. These are meant for the K-5 & all DSLR cameras after that up to the current K-1 Mark II. They don't really work with the K10D & related, but you can give them a try.

Have fun!

Unless your friend can get it for about $50 USA & also buy a "white" solenoid (Jeez Louise! 242 sold so far!) to replace the "green" solenoid with some basic soldering skills, I'd pass on it. More than likely it's going to fail sooner or later. Just visit the K-30 & K-50 section of this forum to get an idea of what we're talking about here.

Skip the K-50 & all variants (K-30, K-500, K-S1, K-S2) & go for a K-5, K-5II, K-5IIs, K-3, K-3II, or even a K-70.

^ Indeed. The PRIME NR in DxO can deliver some amazing high ISO results, but it does take a bit of time to compute.

RawTherapee is free, though. You can't beat free! Especially when it works. Hahaha! :D

^ You're welcome. I'm glad it's helping you out. The learning curve is pretty steep, but once you understand how it works, it's quite easy to use. Did you download a build from my Google Drive or just the PP3 files?

This is basically my #1 RAW converter. I do just about everything with this. PDCU5 & DxO are the next 2 that I use, but it's only on occasion.

Pentax K50 reliability issues?

I'd buy it only if there was a warranty available or I were willing to possibly fix it correctly by replicating the "green" solenoid with a "white" one if it were to fail. Both my K-50 bodies have failed & they failed with high actuations. It seems like the solenoids fail quicker when the cameras are used less. I replaced the solenoids in both of them & have been trouble free since.

A KP or even a K-70 well be more durable.

Probably some fancy KP and/or K-1II with some special coloring & some collector novelties thrown in.

I'm definitely waiting for it. The efforts that they put in their AF system will determine if I spend my money on it or not. :D

UPDATE!

There's a new build in my Google Drive & I've uploaded some new PP3 files. The main changes are in the Optional Folder. The basic ISO PP3 files only contain very basic NR settings. To control the luminance (grain noise), you'll have to apply 1 or more of the optional Noise Reduction PP3 files in the TSM - PP3 Optional folder. You'll have to try them out.

The 2 - Optional dynamicprofile Installation folder contains a couple of setting files that you can use to automate RawTherapee for you. The instructions are in there on how to install them. Once you install them, you can process an entire batch of RAW files by simply selecting all the RAW files & then right clicking on any one of them & selecting Processing profile operations > Reset to default & RawTherapee will automatically apply the appropriate PP3 file to each image. It can't get more simple than that. Then you could even right click & send to queue & have RawTherapee batch everything for you. You'll need to specify a few settings in the queue area.

Have fun!

Don't bother with Windows 7. Support will end on January 14, 2020. That's about 5 months from now. Just go straight to Windows 10. Mind you that this is coming from a guy that loves Windows 7.

Another alternative would be to try a free Linux distribution like Ubuntu LTS, Linuxmint LTS, Fedora, or Debian.

I use Windows 10, Debian, & Fedora.

You'll probably need to do a factory reset & then redo your settings.
