Crikey thanks very much.
I've found that there is so little about the g7 online it usually brings up the gx7.
What you've said is so helpful. I am just about to do a 4 day job (starting in 3 hours time and literally 18-24 hour days) I am gonna be shattered. I'm going to read through this again. But thank you for making it relevant to penta as well. Really appreciate your advise.

It does Edgar.
It also has a setting whereby you can set 2 focuses and the time limit to get between the two so it looks like a pulling focus.

Cheers for the feedback.
Yes once I got it onto a bigger screen I noticed the tripod judders and hand held shakes are something I need to work on.
The vocals were very quiet unfortunately, I even increased the volume on fcpx of the vocals and that was the best I could do.

I used the kit lens and a 100-300 which is ios. I feel I need something in between with a wide aperture which would have added a shalom depth of field when doing the closeups on the singer.

The camera felt great to use, really light and easy to work with. I filmed in 4k and the 32gb memory card became full really quick so that's a lesson learned for next time.
The auto focus on the lumix was great but then I think once something was in focus I should flip it to manual otherwise with people walking in the background it tries to change focus.

And finally.
Here is the footage that I recorded on my new Panasonic Lumix G7.
I shot it in 4k so if you're watching it from a pc be sure to crank up the quality. If you saw my last post which was the same project recorded on my pentax I'm hoping that you'll see the difference in quality.

I welcome all forms of creative feedback too

Thanks mate. I really appreciate your feedback.
I'm by no means a professional videographer I certainly don't do it for a living however I own a marketing company (small) and really enjoy photography and videography so began to learn how to record events for clients.
Since my last message I have gained another client.
This means from now I have 3 proper sized videography contracts which I am glad I have the g7 for. I am still yet to give it a practise run but I did notice that I will be requiring an ND filter for sure.
Thanks again for looking at my other video too. That was my first attempt at video . It was great fun to do too.

I will still be using my pentax for photography, (at least until I learn the capabilities of the g7 )
But the g7 realistically is going to be used for videography primarily.

Tanzer you sound very pleased with your pentax and I'm glad it works for you. I've only played with the g7 for about an hour so am still learning the pros and cons. It is certainly a different photography experience, new buttons, new menus, different sensor, like going from a pc to a mac I'll have to live with it for a while before I can comment on anything.

Yes unfortunately as you read above our client didn't quite think the concept through until we did a site visit. Therefore dubbed audio it was.

I wondered who'd point that out, and I'm glad you did.

Basically there was no power on site, this was purely for video purposes so I took one of their recorded tracks added a bit of live acoustics, a bit of traffic and there ya go. You couldn't hear the guys even if you were stood next to them!!

Hi all,

I did my first professional shoot yesterday on my k500 and go pro hero4. Camera performed better than I thought even if I was hand holding a lot. Followed a lot of your tips.

Here is the video: (please do not share, this is for internal use only)

I also popped in to my local camera store (jessops) and had a play with the g7. That is a great piece of kit and I think this will be the one I invest In.

With a 14-45mm lens and then I'd also get the Panasonic 100-300 lens. It would cost about 1000 but I am happy and it seems to be a lot more video focused than a canon would be, plus it shoots in 4k.

Cheers

Thanks very much Winkler. Great to know that you're in a similar industry.
Thankfully the styles of work I am doing videography for tend to be for social media which can cover up any mistakes quite nicely. But I agree risk management is important to consider.
I've just watched this review here and they speak highly of the Canon 70D. Although not a full frame, it seems to be competing well against the likes of the 5d and it will be a lot cheaper too.
Steve what are your thoughts on this?
Thanks as always folks.

I have just re read through everything on here and must say a massive thank you for everyone's advice. I really appreciate hearing everyone's thoughts.

I have managed to pick up another videography contract which starts in 3 days time and another one for a youtube fitness coach which will be once a fortnight (2 weeks).

I work as a freelance project manager for events so everything I do comes down to an event and a good 70% of the events are documented either as a case study or for social media. Now it would save me a lot of money if instead of hiring my videographer at 700-1000 a time I could charge my client that and actually do it myself.
With a lot more videography work coming in as my career develops (I'm still 24) I think that investing in a 'big boys camera' is the right thing to do.
This evening I have been looking into Canon 5d mark ii and mark iii a Canon 70D, Panasonic GH4, and the Sony A7.
Now on average whether brand new or second hand with accessories they are around the 1500 mark.
I think this is where I am looking at for a video camera that I can use primarily for events, these events are experiential activations which usually take place outside or in shopping centres, the environment is fairly controllable. I like the ability to have a wide lens and short depth of field shot. But more importantly if I am in and out of the event space depending on the site footprint I want to be able to have a piece of kit that means the footage isn't going to wobble about if I am moving around consumers and I can have a steady panning shot with out a patchy frame lag.

The k500 that I've got now has been great for headshots and with the 3 lenses that I have I've enjoyed doing landscape photography and bits of videography but I certainly feel that I am restricted and am constantly worried that my equipment is holding me back from what I want to create.
I'd still like a camera that I can do photography on but for the paid work is the videography.

Once again thank you for your advice thus far and I'd buy you all a beer if I could. I look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts in the above.

Thankfully the contract got so large I am bringing in an assistant who IS a professional videographer whereas I just own a company but figured I'd be able to get away with filming smaller projects.
The audio will likely be music over the top but I do have a zoom h1.
Footage wise I have a gopro which will be doing an 8 hour time lapse all dslr footage will be 5-30 seconds long. As it is all for social media and instagram and twitter limit video time.

So I went and spoke to my local camera store and given my circumstances he suggested upgrading to the k3.
I did a panning shot with the k500 and it was really staggered. I don't know whether that was because I was using 24 fps at 1/50 and should be using something slightly higher? I know the k3 goes up to 60i fps. Do you think that will solve the panning issues.

As an update I spoke with the client about content and I have to produce something stupid like 40x 10 second clips for social media. I did a production schedule and they require it ASAP so I will likely be doing a coupe of 24 hour days lol.

What would you recommend to be the safest settings for video on a k500? I did a test yesterday with different shutter speeds, frame rates etc. I've read that fps 24 and 1/50 is the best because it has a similar motion blur to what our eyes naturally seem I made that mistake when panning a race car with a shutter speed of about 1/800 and the frame was so jerky.

I have a storyboard meeting with the client tomorrow to go through what shots they are wanting from the event.
If it's simple ill pop it on my tripod and it'll be fine. My main issue is if I have to do any walking around style shots I find that the footage is really wobbly. I think it is probably the SR or stabilisation compensating which in my opinion gives an unnatural look.

I shot this using my k500 and a hero4 silver and because I used a tripod I think it came out rather well. So I must agree regarding dslr stabilisation

I haven't tbh Steve, I was going to head down to a camera store this week and explore the differences.
Is there anything I should be aware of?

If budget weren't important I'd get a RED with all the trimmings. Unfortunately I do have to eat between now and my 30th Birthday.
Thank you all for your advise.
I'm thinking what I might do is part exchange all my pentax equipment and get a 700-900 Canon.
I have a meeting with my client next week to work out what storyboard they want for this event. I'm hoping it is going to be lots of tripod shots which is where a pentax works fine. But I've tried to pan moving cars and people and that's when it appears to skip and jump and the edges on the shot seem to skew.
I figured if I'm likely to do a lot more videography in my career (the last 4 projects I've done for this client have all required videography) of which I've outsourced, I'd be saving 1000 a time which realistically I could invest into some very good equipment.
I do a lot of photography for events and head shots for dancers so I think the Panasonic and lumixs wouldn't be best there. I think an all rounder would be best.
So yeah, I think I'm going to look for a Canon with a budget of 700-900 and then perhaps hire a couple of lenses for the event until I can afford to invest into a telephoto and a prime.

Thanks Steve for your response.
The footage I will be creating will be partial time lapse and event footage. Literally to summarise the day to post onto social media. If my budget is around 600 where would you start at replacing the k500? For a dslr that is going to be great for photography and manage videography too. (Nothing too serious, just simple videography for small events) Obviously I'm not going to get anything for the small fortune I have in lenses and the k500 isn't worth too much either.

Thanks Steve.
This is what I've been thinking but didn't want to admit it because it will require a big out lay in new equipment.

In your opinion what is it about pentax that don't make them sufficient video cameras?

Hi all.

I couldn't remember my username so I've had to sign in again.
I have a k500 with 18-55 18-270 and 50 1.8f.
I have just got contracted to do my first event videography job and feel that the k500 isn't up for the challenge.
I have been looking at upgrading to the k-S2 (I'm going to read your reviews on it on here).

What are your thoughts, I do a lot of photography which the pentax is great for but videography should I be upgrading to another pentax or look into another model? Obviously I have a small fortune in pentax lenses and understand how pentax works whereas if I moved to Canon it's a new start again.

I am really looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts.

Many thanks

Jon
