I think telecentric means that the object size does not change as you shift focus or move the lens back or forward slightly (within a certain range) making focus stacking easier.

I did it, bought the KP finally. So...the extended warranty.

This warranty is "from" Ricoh/Pentax no matter where I buy it. B&H is just the seller. (They also include a free inspection/calibration within the 3 years if you want.) They have been offering these since the K10D at least (I think they added the free inspection part later) -- like I said I've bought them before but it has been a few generations since I've gotten a new Pentax body (my current bodies are the K-5 & K-01, plus some Q-series bodies). It is just strange that it is cheaper at B&H (if in-fact it is the same thing), so was looking for clarification.

As far as the "is it worth it", "should I be worried about it at all", etc, really I'm well aware of all these things. (I will point out that I've needed warranty service on 50% of my Pentax APS-C bodies so far though.)

I sent a request to Ricoh to clarify. If the $50 one is good, I'll definitely get it. If I have to go for the $110 one, then I'll think about it. Did they used to be cheaper? (I guess the cameras were as well.) I bought an extended warranty for earlier bodies (K-5 and earlier), I remember them being a no-brainer at the time.

Yes, you can turn it off with any Pentax model. It turns off automatically in some modes (timer, etc).

Not sure about that. Ricoh doesn't even seem to have the warranty on their site. It is fairly unclear.

Hmmm...but even though I got it with a black friday deal, the MSRP is still 1096.99. So maybe it doesn't apply. B&H doesn't even have one for $110, but Adorama does. But it doesn't have any details about sub-$1000 or $1000 & up...

Hey, I finally got that KP I've been wanting for 2 years. Didn't buy the extended warranty because I know I can buy it within 30 days, but just now I see that B&H has it for $50 instead of $110. This is the right thing, right?

Rant: camera prices and quality per format

Markets dictate prices, not cost of materials or build quality. Although those things can affect what the market is -- it is a feedback loop. Still, smaller market = higher prices. People often have an intuitive feeling that the retail cost of things should be the cost of producing them times some "reasonable" amount of profit, and that's that. But that just isn't the way world works. Cost of materials, labor, etc set a floor, but not a ceiling.

With a teleconverter, why some lenses are better at PDAF than CDAF and vice versa?
Posted By vonBaloney

With loss of light, PDAF can hunt but if it does lock on focus, that focus is usually just as accurate as usual (just can be harder or impossible to acquire). Whereas CDAF can be prone to getting a "false lock" with lowered light reaching the sensor. I would expect the newer model bodies to be better performing in both modes than the older ones (which I am still using). As far as certain lenses being worse than others, there seems to be problem with wide-angles in particular -- probably has to do with the fact that with the greater depth-of-field, everything is often *almost* in focus and the contrast detection just can't make those fine distinctions. Again, newer bodies may be better with this, but I know for instance with my K-01 (which only has CDAF) using something like the Sigma 8-16, trying to auto-focus on anything more than a foot away is totally unreliable (even without a TC, but you usually wouldn't be putting a TC on short/wide lenses anyway.)

Aperture not changing Manual Lens
Posted By vonBaloney

With the lens off the body, the blades should definitely open and close and you turn the ring. If if you are stopped down on the ring, the aperture lever should be springy and the blades should open if you move the lever and then close again if you let it go. So it seems like your aperture is just broken, but I didn't see you check the lever in the video so make sure that isn't just stuck or something ( probably bent if it is).

I have one where it seems to mount ok and the f stop shows on the LCD,etc, but aperture closes super slow. When unmounted lever moves freely, seems just as springy as any. Can't figure that one out.

Topaz "Gigapixel AI" is the best software I've bought in years

Please note the Denoise AI is not like their old Denoise program (which is also excellent). And you probably should eliminate any other denoising/sharpening going on in LR or wherever before you apply these. I'm not positive if Gigapixel should be a first or last step, but I'm assuming last, otherwise any additional processing will be very computationally expensive because the image will be that much bigger. I have mainly personally used Denoise AI and Sharpen AI -- my wife is the "preparing photos for printing" guru, I'd have to ask her about that. I do know she said Gigapixel works great with some images, some others turn out weird. Which is to be expected with this tech. (Just as Sharpen AI can rescue some images amazingly from camera movement or slight missed focus but others will have too many weird artifacts.) All worth having in the toolbox though.

Gigapixel AI is more for enlarging that sharpening. They have another on called Sharpen AI for sharpening (which does more than normal sharpening -- it rescues missed focus and fixes camera movement) and Denoise AI for noise. They are all pretty amazing, and they update the models they use quite often. You do need a decent graphics card.

Format makes no difference to that, only the focal length. A medium format 150mm lens and a full-frame (35mm format) 150mm lens are both 150mm focal length lenses -- same FOV on APS-C.
