I have never had a complaint about this lens until I tried to take photos of the recent "super blood" moon.
To get a better focus, I switched to manual focus and used Live View.
However, turning the focus ring precisely was difficult because it is "by wire". When I turned it in live view it was hard to get focus when compared to the old 55-300 screw drive.
I suppose I should go back out at night an use the old lens and see if my live view focus is easier.

I'll be there in April too. Maybe I'll run into you!
It's a family vacation but I kind of want to bring a DSLR too, just in case.
I am even toying with bringing my old K100D just because I enjoy shooting with it as long as there is plenty of light.

This is why I love the K-3 combo with the 16-85.
Here is a shot zoomed all the way out to 85 *and* cropped significantly as well!
Cannon Beach, Oregon, last Saturday.

My family just got back from a great trip to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons.
The K-3 and 16-85 lens came with us, of course!
Here is one from a float trip down the Snake River. I had a CPL attached and that help with a more vivid shot.
I still love this lens!

There are two flavors of Sigma 10-20 zooms that fit this range.
I have shot both and just tried the variable aperture version but think the other one is actually better.
I'm hopeful that this new 11-18 will be as satisfying at the 16-85 and if it is I will gladly move on from the Sigma 10-20.
If it is really, really expensive then I might think twice, though....

Nice photo.
I concur, the 16-85 is pretty much my favorite lens.
Versatile range and great image quality.
My kit 18-55 lens is just collecting dust now!

K-5 Innards loose?

My K-3 makes a little racket and that is the sensor as you all have described.
However, the K-5 is a definite "clunk" and it is heavy (like more than the sensor).
I guess I will test shoot a few more times and if it works, I won't worry about it!

I'm aware that the sensor is able to move and should be stable when the camera is powered up.
However, this feels like basically everything inside the case is loose. I will try again tonight and see how it compares to my K-3 body.

It is happening in all conditions, battery in or not.
It's like the entire chassis is moving about a couple millimeters.
Seems to function okay though....

To my knowledge, my K-5 has never been dropped.
However, when I pick it up and rotate it in my hand (as from portrait to landscape view) I can feel and hear everything inside the camera moving.
It's as if the innards of the camera are loose to move.
Has anyone else experienced this and should I be concerned?

DA 55-300 WR with Pentax 1.4x TC -- is this combo a big mistake?

I took a rented Pentax 1.4x TC to a motorcycle race last year with my K-3 and 55-300.
I was really disappointed in the slow AF and poor results I got.

So I have a stand alone version of LR, version 5.7.1.
I need a profile for a new lens but all the Adobe support is about the creative cloud which is $9.99 per month.
I guess if I want the lens profile I have to join this?

Hi friends!

I have Adobe Lightroom version 5.7.1 on my Windows 10 PC.
I really would like the lens profile for the new version of the 55-300 zoom.
Is this profile available and if so how can I get it on my PC?

Thanks!

Here is a five shot bracket which was combined using the Photomatix Pro plugin from Adobe LR.
It was shot in Tanzania on my recent trip there, specifically the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Ndutu region.
Camera was my K-3 and I had my favorite lens, the 16-85 ED DC WR.
To protect the lens from dust, it had a circular polarizer installed which from this angle didn't do much but increase shutter times.

I took this with my K-3 in East Africa last week. Great trip.
Most of the trip was looking at all the animals and I had the new 55-300 attached to K-3 most of the time.
For this shot I used the 16-85 and it has a circular polarizer still on it. I left it on due to all the dust.
This was a challenge to meter so I just did a 5 shot bracket and put it through Photomatix Pro.
I like how it turned out!

Thanks, I'm not planning to use the 1.4x on my next trip and will do as you suggest, crop. K-3 is pretty good about that.

I used the old version at a motorcycle race last year with the 1.4x teleconverter. It drove me crazy. It could not focus well at all and I only got a few good shots. This new one would have been faster/better.

Battery conditioning

Hi all,
I have a few batteries that I use on my K-3 and K-5.
These batteries are doing well but I know that I'm not conditioning them well.
You are supposed to fully or nearly fully discharge them and keep them fully charged.
I do fully charge them but they mostly get partially discharged on trips and then put back on the charger.
Is there a product that will help maintain them better?

Thanks..

This is a three shot HDR which made the colors deeper...but it's the colors that make me like this plane!
