I used the DFA 150-450 hand held. I find that the SR on the K3II does indeed work better.

K3 and Rokinon 24mm Tilt Shift Lens

This is a lens that I have wanted for a long time. While I had the Arasat 35mm tilt shift at one time, the IQ was not to my expectations. The Rokinon 24mm has a nice focal length and allows shifting or tilting in all directions. A few days ago I visited the Rocky Mountains in Alberta to try it out. The pic is shot at f5.6 and appears quite sharp and was paired with the K3. The focus peaking on the K3 allows you to select the degree of tilt for max sharpness across the frame.

Sales are way down from last year. However, it is not clear if they actually lost money in the 1st quarter or not or broke even. Not a good sign and Ricoh is not giving hints at future directions so this along with recent negative news reports is likely bleeding sales. Who wants to buy into a camera system that is on shaky ground? I have the K1 and the lenses I need to will not be helping them in near future.

Agree that a new DFA 300 f2.8 is not likely as Pentax's market share is so low that how many would purchase it; except for you?

K1 at Edmonton Judo Championship

While we know that the K1 is not at specialised sports camera due to low fps and less than top of the line AFC, nontheless, I used the K1/DFA 70-200 combo at a recent judo event.Us amateurs can have somefun too. The low capabilities of the K1 sensor are very useful as you crank up the ISO easily. I used AFS instead of AFC as I have found more success in the past. To increase fps shot in jpeg instead of RAW and sometimes used crop mode if subjects were far enough away. Regardless a fun outing. The judocontestants from Japan were amazing and won most of their matches.

If you enjoy your gear why not continue. Fortunately for us, Ricoh is a huge company so there is lots of backing and photography is like a hobby to them. Trying to predict the future is challenging and so consider focussing on enjoying things right now. The K1 is a fantastic and I am would not want to give up its unique features for C or N.

Advice needed for shooting indoor flower show.

Hi Scott:

I would suggest trying the DA 50 f1.8 as it would work well for indoor lighting. If you have a 49mm close up filter that would allow you to get some close ups also. I would try vivid as the colours should pop on the flowers.

Last week was able to visit the southern Great Plains near Lethbridge, Alberta, close to where I grew up. Was fortunate to encounter some beautiful morning light. The DFA 28-105 IQ appears to be as good as the DFA 24-70 once stopped down; a very good value lens. Too bad it does not start at 24mm?

K1, Rokinon 24mm Tilt Shift: Abraham Lake Alberta

These 2 photos are from last week at Abraham Lake Alberta in the Rockies which is known for ice bubbles due to methane emissions. The ice is clear of snow due to high winds in area. The 24mm tilt/shift was shot at f11 with 3 deg of tilt. This lens appears to be best at f8-f11 which is why it was stopped down so much.

Yes I used Scheimpflug principle to set focus. Using Live View, I tested tilt angles affect on focal plane and used manual focus to get focus on foreground to background. Once deg tilt was found, then used it for a series of shots and just checked focus.

You can't go wrong with either the K3 or K1. Since economics come into play, I would recommend the K3ii over K1 as it is much more affordable and has all of the K1 features like pixel shift, astrotracer and built in GPS (except for swivel screen). While I upgraded to K1, the DFA lenses are also much more expensive, so for me the K3ii hits a sweet spot for affordability and features.

While I moved from the K3II to the K1 and love it, if your lenses are for APSC the K3II is a mini K1 and has great IQ and the same features (except swivel screen) as the K1. If you don't need to print large, the K3II will do fine.

K1/Samyang 24mm Tilt/Shift and Pixel Shift

Now that the K1 is out the Samyang Tilt Shift usefullness really shines. Using the tilt function (photo 1) you can shoot almost wide open (f4) and get a large depth of field; note that pixel shift was also done on this photo.. Also, using the shift function, you can straighten buildings as outlined in Photos 2 (without Shift) and 3 (with shift). While these are taken on a tripod, using tilt/shift lens could be done handheld (1/125 sec shutter speed), of course but no pixel shift.

K1 Outdoor Macro Pixel Shift: ISO 8000

Can the K1 Pixel Shift feature be used for outdoor macro work? While we know that the Pixel Shift is not meant to be used during lots of motion, how does it work in mild windy conditions at ISO 8000? I decided to give it a try. This example was with the DFA 100 macro and Pixel Shift motion correction was turned on. The ISO was cranked up high to increase shutter speeds to help deal with the mild wind. Example below. Note the original file is too large to post so it is a small version but looks quite clean for ISO 8000.

K1 Does Canadian Rodeo

Last weekend I tried the K1 out at a local rodeo. For the past 5 years I have shot rodeo action using a series of cameras including K5, K5IIs, K3, K3II and now K1. Each year I have noticed small incremental improvements in AF for each new model; since I rarely shoot rodeo, I can't say that my skill in shooting has really improved!

How did the K1 perform? Well this year the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 and the DFA 150-450 were the lenses used; with the Tamron getting most of the action since it is much lighter to handle. While this can't be proven, the K1 AF appears to be the most sophisticated of all previous Pentax bodies. Since the K1 has a few extra modes than the K3/K3II series, I didn't get to try all combinations of settings to see what works best. Once thing that was noticed was that AFC definately appears better at tracking; while the K3 series have a theoretical 8 frames/sec frame rate, because of poor tracking the actual frame rate was usually 4-5/sec; for the K1 the 6 fps rate in Crop Mode can actually be reached and utilized because of better AF tracking. The K1 was shot mainly in Crop Mode to get a higher frame rate of about 6 fps.

My conclusion is that while the K1 is not a sport camera per se, because of a more effective frame rate and better AF, it suits my needs when required as sports is one of many things that a DSLR is used for. Therefore, the K1 appears to be the best all around DSLR to date (except 645Z which are another category).

A few examples included.
