Pentax- what compels us to remain Pentaxian ? What's your story ?

When i first started i had a point and shoot and a load of film equipment passed down from my grandfather. None of it made much sense to me or felt like real quality apart from the pentax MX and its lenses. The rest just did not perform. As i was about to upgrade i was looking around at superzoom cameras and then the k20d was released. At the same time i ran into my first professional work and therefore a bit of money and it was mine. For me just the look of the k20d was to change my mind, regardless of its feature set and compatibility. Ive tried out other DSLRs in the same class and they might look good on paper but they feel and work so shitty and the lenses are way overpriced. Pentax forever ;p

looks like the kind of stuff you find on deviantart.
The lighting and effects are extremely inconsistent and there is just no subtlety or beauty to it...

Great sharpness and i love the light. Didn you just use a large softener for it?

Heres one of my early attempts: . on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

The magnification is so huge because im using a reversed lens less than an inch away from the subject, but i think the bare flash from above gives it a weird look.

Thanks erik, i understand where you are coming from but i really dont need all of these features. I may ass well be using digital! The size factor, batteries, onboard flash and digital buttoney bits just dont appeal to me.

Thanks for your continued advice!!! :) No im fine with the vignetting. With my 55-300mm there is none on full frame anyway...
What ive just noticed though is that even though it has P and A modes it only has 2 contact pins and they are in the wrong place!

Thanks for all your help everyone.

I am considering the idea of ND filters as the problem i have is with aperture in sunlight. Very good idea. The LX is ideal but i dont have the money.

Im considering the Ricoh XR cameras. Any advice?

What pentax 35mm SLR has the following:

fully manual controls
shutter speed to 1/2000
low price/widely available

My ideal camera would basically be an MX with higher shutter speed and low price.
Does this exist or will i have to compromise to something with auto mode and a crappy build quality?
I will probably only ever use it with M 50mm 1.4

in the meantime i work on fixing my MX's light meter...

thanks for help

LumoPro LP120, new budget manual flash for strobists, free for a week

Just thought i would stop in and mention i borrowed an LP120 from lumopro. It is their new flash designed to replace the classic 285HVs
I have posted a brief review on my flickr:
Lumopro LP120 on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

It is a very nice little bit of kit, a good match for my sigma 530 although it obviously only has manual controls, no TTL or any of that!

Anyway, if anyone is interested you can sign up on the LP120 flickr group, they will add you to a list and eventually you will get sent a flash free of charge, which you keep for 1 week before sending to the next guy. Well worth it even if you just want to try out a multiple flash setup sometime soon.
The link to the flicmr group is here: Flickr: LumoPro LP120

Hope to see some UK pentax guys adding their name to the list!

thanks guys, very detailed instructions but its not really in my "language".. hahaha. All i can work out from that is that there is some pretty critical circuitry under the topplate that could well be the problem, ill check it out later. Unfortunately it wont be in action for a gig im going to tonight so its entirely up to the k20d.
If anyone else has any experience with the lightmeter it would be very much appreciateedd

looks like the hoya close up lenses have a lot of CA just like i assumed. Still, very nice macros. I like the lighting and composition. If you want to avoid the CA you could use a flash with a softener so that the highlights are not so harsh. This would also produce great lighting effects and allow you to use higher shutterspeeds.

Ok, the other day i stupidly took my mx into school and it suffered a pretty nasty fall, this camera has never let me down before but i dropped it pretty hard. The 50mm 1.4 was totally warped and focus missaligned, i took it apart and built it up again from scratch and its working perfectly again!
I managed to fix the counter and winder in the body, but unfortunately the lightmeter will not engage. It has always been on and off, often needed a couple of bangs to get working, but at the moment it is completely unactive. I opened up the bottom plate and tested the battery contacts and switch, both are working and i got some flickrs out of the lightmeter too.

Anyway, need help with this. Anyone else got loose LED type lightmeters? Where is the problem?
I'd love some MX internals schematics too.

My purple fringing is ok most of the time, but at 2.8 it can span a few pixels. In high contrast situation and at wide angle this will become more prenounced.

they show up on ebay occasionally, you just have to be very patient. Also try markets or [photography fairs where there are a lot of old kit knocking about (but you will pay a premium).

Just out of interest, what do you want 5fps for? youll only end up swallowing entire rolls of film in under 6 seconds.

Good reason NOT to use photo sites like FLICKR

This does not worry me. I wouldnt mind whoever uses my images like this, just like the family said. What harm is it to me? While the cats away the mice will play.
If a major commercial organisation were using my image for promotion, or was making money out of photos i took for them under false pretences, that would be a different story.
But when you put stuff into the public domain you trade publicity for security, and im sure my photos are ending up on a lot more blogs, linked to my site, than there are czech businesses with a poor concept of image sourcing.

I'm using a 530 dg super flash with cactus V4s. I use everything on manual. I am shooting badgers and i am waiting maybe 1 hour, 2 sometimes. The flash is always turning itself off every 2 minutes!!!
I cant keep trigerring them, the badgers are not liking it, and if it turn itself off and the badger is having a look around, i can not stand up and go to the flash and turn it on!! I sit there and cry because my flash just give up on me.
What can i do?

In slave mode the flash is triggering itself!!! Two flashes every time!! In P-TTl slave mode i cant make it dark. Can i open it up and take out the bit that makes it sleep?

P.s. cactus V4s are great.

I always wondered why pentax dont put this in their professional models. It wouldnt cost much more and would allow me to get closer into the action without needing a longer lens... am i missing something?

Oh thats right, i have a computer dont i! silly me!

k20d recently released a firmware which "improved shake reduction accuracy"
No worries for us then.
If you are shooting at such high shutter speeds (faster than 1/focal length) then im sure the difference is not enough to show up in rael world shooting.

what? Thats full screen resolution. If it was any more we'd just get impossible files.

And to RH, even if the image quality is lower, the features are not meaningless. They are still good points that will make the camera better to use. Stop being silly.

K-7 Video Questions

Very interesting concept. The fujifilm S100fs was once a major consideration of mine for one reason. When you push the ISO limits up it downsizes the image, because it is using 2, 4, or 8 pixels for every one pixel in the image, thereby keeping noise incredibly low. It would be great to see this technology being used when shooting at low resolutions or in video, but im willing to bet there would be processing issues or something which would limit the ability of the sensor to do this continuously.

I got my answer. Its the lower voltages of the pentax system, which creates a delay in the cactus shoe system. Will keep testing different modes and configurations.
