DFA 21 Limited designers' discussion

From the 'A message from the development team' - "To achieve this goal, we designed the lens differently from conventional models: we intentionally retained a certain level of aberration to create a mild bokeh effect in close-range photography, while creating sharp, crisp images of distant scenery at closed-down apertures. While we were well aware of a mellow image rendition of close-range scenes a feature common to the Limited Lens-series snapshot lenses we pursued the sharpness in long-distance scenic photography using a 21mm wide-angle perspective."

My take from this is that they designed to have good bokeh handling close up but further out i.e. towards infinity start ramping up the resolution.

It is in the development story or part of the DFA Limited Special site. Phrasing is not exact but I intimated that close up = more bokeh friendly, further out acting more like a normal lens. I'll find the exact phrasing and revert.
It is not a one trick pony and it'll be fun finding out exactly what it can do :)

The obvious reason for the price will be the development model it followed and it has been hinted in the special site. The optical finalisation was effectively done manually instead of computer simulation. Manual costs money. So it might have less glass than the DFA*50, or be a simpler design than the DA*16-50 but the man power effort to realise the design is higher on this than on any other Pentax lens to date. €1500 /20yr lifespan = €75 pa - its actually good value

Yeah, I've queried it with Ricoh-Imaging.eu - can't have a Limited without a lens cap or bag!

Not so much the money, its just that I try to limit myself to one lens per focal size - the close focus rendering of the Zeiss is one of its best attributes and was something that I hoped the 21 would share (which is looks to do :)) so the 21 would be matched against the 25 and the loser would move onto a different home.

Interesting that the lens cap and leatherette bag are separate from the lens itself - dunno whether or not to applaud for cheekiness or snort in disgust!

Jeez a lot of people need a flogging here to improve morale :p

It's a new Limited do a Big Deal, if you're not interested, good for you, don't tell us, just '*&#@' off, if it's too expensive, sorry to hear that, but that's your opinion, don't tell us, just '*&#@' off, if it doesn't match the aperture of a non optically corrected fuji, good green grass over the fence there, off you go and '*&#@' off.

Right that's the whingers gone. What do we know? It's not listed in EU yet but sub €1500 doable? f/2.4 is more than enough for 21 on FF, a 20 degree tilt downwards and I'd have bokeh'd shoes :)

'*&#@' can mean buzz, a bold word, or something else altogether in a different language :)

Pentax is like a Bushmills malt, infrequently mentioned in whiskey circles as they've been forgotten about, but look up a review of a 16 or 21 and they have the ability to punch above their weight and surprise ;) A bit like the DFA*'s.
The 645Z ii might be equivalent to the Malaga 1995 Causeway edition. Limited, rare but very much worth it if you know what you're about.

Accurate summary that would agree with my findings on the 55 (I had 3 different samples over the years) - I found I was choosing to take an K or an A50/1.2 as I was getting a better hit rates with them.

I picked up a new hood from Ricoh-Imaging.eu a few years ago to fix my loose example, only helped a little.
Bigger point here I think you all are missing is that there are no replacement hoods, so that means a new DA*50-135 is coming :D

DFA 70-300 - Possibly
DFA 4.0 24-105 - Not going to happen
DFA 1.4 35 - Waiting for it
DFA macro - Refresh of what? the 50 or 100, one needs a new body + motor, the other needs work on its optics or a redesign
DA 50-135 or 150 - Presumably with PLM motors?
Prototype and or studies
DFA... 300 - New motors and design language?
DFA 500 or 600 - Click bait
DFA 24-70 - Perhaps as a Star lens, it must grate with some of the optics team that there is a bought in /2.8 zoom(s)

Doesn't seem to be their usual reviewers but reasonably thorough.

Pentax K-3 III Review | ePHOTOzine

Showed up on PentaxUser first so I gave a cursory slapdown on the user manual (which I received with my K-3iii), pointed out that if you bought direct from Ricoh-Imaging then you could apply your loyalty points towards the fast charger and it would cost about €10 and lastly mentioned the O-ME53 if they wanted more space for their face :p

Pentax K3 iii AP Review

I used to subscribe to AP back in the day. In fact I still have physical copies of their K10D, K20D & K-7 reviews. They are a shadow of the magazine from those days with a marked shift in their editorial stance after Damien Demolder left as editor (whom I regard as a closet Pentaxian since he used to rate the 43 as his favourite lens :))
As others have remarked, it takes time to understand a camera and that is with the benefit of system knowledge and this review barely scratches the surface.
A good example of the sophistication of the K-3iii is that Ricoh-Imaging are currently holding virtual workshops of the S-Fn button right now.

Pentax don't make it easy. This is THE lens if you have a K-3iii. In fact I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if the K-3iii & DA* 16-50 PLM outperform the K-1 & DFA24-70 SDM in some scenarios. I promised to be good this year LBA wise... I can start again in September :D

Whingers be whingers. Looks to be the job for the K-3iii. Not too big, not too heavy. Pentax have also published a nice set of MTF figures plus perhaps more importantly for some, expected timing speeds for focusing.

1 x Super ED
1 x ED Aspherical Surface
+ another 10 elements. It's a Star so no messing it about.

Not a cheap optical makeup but one for quality. Price wise I'd say about 200K Jpn Yen
