DA 50mm 1.8 - Brief hands-on impressions and samples

Looking at these images I think that Sigma AF 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM is a much better choice. Sure, it's more expensive, but it's worth it. It's got much, much smoother bookeh, probably the best of all 50mm lenses. Also wider aperture, much better build quality, HSM, comes with a hood, it's much sharper @ f/1.4 than DA 50mm @ f/1.8. I think the DA 50mm is overpriced. If the price was about $100 then why not, but at $249 it's just better to save up for the Sigma.

Does Pentax make the most weatherproof Cameras? and lenses

Only Canon L lenses with IS are weather-sealed plus a few non-IS. Non-IS L lenses are usually NOT sealed whatsoever. I just saw a picture of a fly that hatched behind the front element of a 70-200mm f/4 L lens. However, Canon still does make 14 lenses that are weather sealed and 2 teleconverters. Nikon has 14 weather sealed lenses. But they are very, I mean very expensive. Pentax produces 13 lenses that are marked as WR. I think that's quite a large number considering that several of them are inexpensive.

Have you used your camera somewhere where lasers were? Lasers can very seriously damage your sensor.
You can try pixel mapping to see if it can be fixed automatically. It's somewhere in the menu.

Preorders are about 230 here in the Czech Republic. That seems quite reasonable if the optical quality is about the same as the Pentax 35mm f/2.4. Also I'm sure the price will go down as soon as it's released.

I guess nobody has mentioned it yet - have you noticed that there are two connector doors on the right side? So there might be an HDMI connector and external microphone input, maybe even headphone jack underneath? Just speculating...

I hope they improved it a lot. It would be nice to finally have smaller focus points with good AF-C.

Brand new K-5... dust under LCD glass. Now what?

I actually agree with TAP. Spec of dust under is nothing. Why would you want to replace it if the camera is otherwise perfectly fine? The weather sealing is obviously completely fine and the bit of dust got there during the assembly process. Please, just go shooting and don't continue with this nonsense anymore. ;)

You live outside the US, so if I were you, I'd sell all the lenses except the DA 16-45mm, keep the k-x and get the DA* 50-135mm. But that's just me.

Help... Best in IQ

Get better glass first, then start thinking about the K-5. Combination of worse body + better glass is always better than better body + worse glass. IQ of the K-x is already amazing. I personally don't think that upgrade to K-5 from K-x is reasonable IQ-wise, because the K-5 is double the price and the difference in IQ is quite small. Anyway, with K-5 you'd get better ergonomy, no doubt about that. But if I were in your shoes, I'd wait for the K-5's succesor. Pentax has to make big improvements to the AF system.

The reason why students prefer CaNikon over Pentax is actually very simple. When they buy CaNikon, the school can lend them lenses and other equipment (for free of course). At least that is common practice here in the Czech Republic speaking about colleges focused on design & photography. I'm actually going to go to college myself in September, so I know what I'm talking about. And although it's not a photography-focused one, I am definitelly going to continue photography as my past-time activity. I love my K-x so far and it has never let me down.

Actually, you CAN turn off DFS in bulb mode. You just need to go to the debug menu (there's a topic about it somewhere here).

If I were you, I'd sell these:
* M28mm f2.8
* M50mm f2.0
* Yashica m42 135mm f2.8 with adapter and macro adapter.
* FA 28-70mm f4.0
* DAL 18-55mm kit
* Takumar F 70-200mm
and get the DA* 16-50mm + some tele if you need one (like the DA* 50-135mm)

Ok, thanks guys for the help. I'll get the DA 35/2.4. And later hopefully the Tamron 28-75/2.8, but that's out of my budget right now.

What should I get?

Hi everyone!
I finally saved some money, and now I'm thinking about getting a new walk-around lens. The thing is, I was almost decided to get a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8, but I found out from the reviews that the Pentax 35mm f/2.4 is also a great lens. Now obviously, the Pentax one is not as versatile as the Tamron, but 35mm is wide enough for me. I usually use the wide focal length setting with my kit lens (18mm), but I have a Tokina 35-105mm and I never had a problem with it not being wide enough. But it's a manual lens and tbh MF and stop-down metering can be a lot of fun, but not for longer periods of time. I also have a Pentax-M 50mm f/1.7, so I've got that focal length covered. Back to the dilemma, the priorities for me are image quality, lens speed and of course money (I'm a student). Here the Tamron costs about $390 and the Pentax about $230, which is almost a half. I have never heard anything bad about the Pentax one, but with Tamron I heard there are some serious QC issues. I don't want to buy a lens finding it's got a front- or back-focus and sending it back, and I have absolutely no opportunity trying the lens before buying it here. So I was rather thinking about getting the Pentax 35mm f/2.4 and later buying something more wide. I'd be thankful for any helpful advice.
