K-01 Kept me with Pentax

I still love my K-01 and Pentax lenses too. I was just up in NYC last weekend and had my K-01 and DA 15. I had forgotten my regular tripod so I had the K-01 on a small table top tripod on my back pack sitting on the rocks...this was about a 6 sec exposure just after sunset...not bad considering the wind and situation.

No, the iconic photos of the mountains in that area are beautiful when they are shrouded in mist!

Thanks!- I was going to pick up a used 16-50 and 50-135 but am getting a little cold feet as I read about SDM failures....sigh....

to Bagga_Txips!
I just checked rainfall in Guilin - April is the 3rd wettest month of the year there and actually has the highest average days of rain (20 days) all year!
I'll pray for blue skies!!!! Thanks!

I thank everyone that has answered so far! Great information!

FYI- I already have a K01 and Kx and many decent lenses but not weather sealed (15, 40, 77, 55-300, Tamron 28-75) but was going to pick up a K30 and then 1 or 2 weather sealed lenses for the rainy conditions... seeing this is a once in a life time experience I did not want to feel compromised if it was very rainy all the time.

But...several people suggest not to worry about using a weather sealed camera and lenses... e.g., use an optek rain sleeve... I could use more opinions on experiences from folks shooting under rainy vacations. Thanks again!

Head to China in April - will be in Guilin and headed up the Li River. I also may visit the Yunhe rice terraces out side of Shanghai. The weather is projected to be very rainy.

Which 2-3 weather sealed lens combo would you pick for this trip to go with K30?

DA*16-50
DA* 50-135
DA18-55 WR
DA 18-135 WR
DA 55-300 WR
DA*55

Thanks in advance!

Thanks everyone for your comments and advice. Luckily I waited a a few weeks and then grabbed one of the last black bodies from Adorama at $249 last week! What a steal! I just did a search and noticed they are not selling the K 01 bodies anymore....am thinking they might have a fire sale on the K 01 - 40 xs combo at some time soon to get rid of all of the stock....

Played a little with a Tamron 28-75 and a 90 mm (non DI very old model) and was pretty happy. The firmware upgrade to 1.03 made a huge difference in autofocus!
Can't wait to try the 40 and 77 on this baby.

Happy shooting!

(Yes, planning to get the white storm trooper (Kx) cleaned...)

No, I still only have the K-x body...

Long - very lucky - story of fate....I started with the K-x when it first came out late in 2009, in early 2011 I had just gotten the 40 and 77 on a trip to Italy. When I was there, the company that I was consulting for presented me with a D7000 and 18-105 as a gift! :) (All the guys there were Nikon/leica gear heads). Then by fate again, I found a mint 70-200 vrii at an absolute steal. I use that combo a lot for my daughter's gym meets (competitive), birding, portraits. At that point, the Pentax system started to sit. Last year I got bitten by the Xpro1.

I still am posting older shots with the Kx on my flickr site....I really love the old Tamron 90 mm non Di that I got for $200 for flower macros...it has a really unique look to the pics.

Am heading to the Calif coast and dont have anything really wide in the Nikon or Fuji systems lower than 18. The Fuji 14 is about $900! I was figuring the DA15 and that $300 for a new K01 body would be a nice dual purpose investment....grade up from the Kx.

I know, 3 camera systems:o!!! Someone shoot me.... NO wait, there's probably lots of you gear heads out there too! :D

Thanks everyone...I think I will spring for a K-01. I saw a groupon ad a few weeks ago that had the body AND 40 xs for less than $300- but that is gone now....any thoughts on the odds of deals like this coming back soon at the major dealers? Seems like $300 for the body now is still a decent price.

I've tried pec pads and cleaning solutions...all to no avail...I cannot get rid of little black spots showing up all over in sky shots when I am at high aperatures.
Its a problem I've had from early on with the K-x. Should I send it in to Pentax for cleaning? Any idea what that would set me back?

Hi -
I started out several years ago using a K-x. I have the DA 15, 40 and 55-300 plus the FA 77.
Over the years, I have migrated away from Pentax and thus these lenses have been sitting around.
My K-x is a mess....I've tried everything to clean the mirror/sensor but when I shoot something at a high aperture
there's all kinds of gunk showing up.

I don't think I'll ever grade up to a higher level Pentax body but I love the pentax primes I have and am not sure that
I want to sell them yet. Do you think it would be worth to pick up a K-01 ($300 at BH now) and thus be able to keep shooting
Pentax for at least a couple of more years?

Thanks in advance!

reviewing and erasing photos takes a big toll on battery life in my experience.
300-400 shots in raw using eneloops
seems forever (hah!) with a set of lithiums!

CPL question

Funny because no it does not look like it protrudes but the Pentax hood just doesn't want to sit down past the CPL...when I did have the hood on and screwed the CPL on via the door, I tried to remove the hood first and it got partially stuck (that was scary) and I had to wiggle it back down, then it took me 2 minutes to unscrew the CPL because I had such trouble trying to do this via the door only...scary too! I am totally at a loss but thanks to everyone who has tried to help.

CPL question

Docwrm- Do you screw in the CPL and then mount the Pentax hood?
The hood I have is the plastic Pentax PH-RBG model. The CPL I just bought is BW slim 58 mm. Once I screw on the CPL it looks like I can't screw on the hood anymore. That is kinda of a bummer. Is this combination incompatible? If so I wish I had known so in advance... :(

As I had mentioned in my original post, the only way I can mount both is to screw on the hood, then carefully plop the CPL in, take the door off the hood and then screw the CPL in. The problem is getting the CPL back out. It is easy to screw in through the window but if you screwed it in tight it is really hard to unscrew it via the door because you can't grab the ring from opposite sides.... and I can just see it getting stuck and not being able to comfortably back it out.

CPL question

Sorry but I have a really dumb question. I just got a CPL for my DAL 55-300. I got it as I am on vacation in Hawaii and shooting a lot into the sun and on the ocean.
Is there still a need to use my pentax hood with the CPL?

If yes, my pentax hood does have a removable window on it. However, tt appears that I cannot put the CPL on the lens and then screw the hood on. I was able to screw the hood on, then remove the window, drop the CPL into the hood and gently screw the CPL onto the lens. However, I had one heck of a time getting the CPL off trying to unscrew it via the small window opening to be able to remove the hood. I am now afraid to do that again.

Thanks in advance.

Sensor is dirty or what?

I had similar problems with my K-x after a year....tried a rocket blower, local camera shot tried to clean it with bottled air....but when I shot at a blue sky at F22 or so...I still saw many spots like you are seeing.

I bought this
Amazon.com: Digital Survival KIT - Sensor Swab Type 2 (w/Eclipse): Camera & Photo
and though I was nervous as hell cleaning the sensor this way, after 2 cleanings I got rid of all the little black smudges....:)

Agree that for outside/good light shooting, the DA/L 55-300 should do it for you and for less than half the cost of anything else. For inside sports like gymnastics, etc it might be limiting because of the dark lighting...just depends on how close you can get. In our 5000 seat basketball arena (small), I can get great shots with it even 3/4 ways up in the bleachers. I've also used this lens at lure coursing events for whippets and I have been quite happy with the results.

What is your "Walking Around Lens?"

I have a K-X (my first DLSR) and 18-55, 55-300, Tam 28-75, and FA77. My "walk around lens" (WAL) has always been the 55-300. I almost never use the 18-55. When I was in Italy a few months ago i used the 55-300 -- 75%, 28-75 -- 10%, and my Lumix LX3 -- 15% for all the wide angle shots (it was easier to whip this little baby out than to change lenses).

I thought I would love the 28-75 when I got it and tried to use it as my WAL but always missed the long end. With the 55-300 I can get angled shots of architecture in a town street, candids of people [cause I'm far away], close ups of flowers or portraits with great bokeh, etc.

(Recently I spent the whole day with the 77 at a workshop meeting at a large dairy research complex. Most of the shots I took were of people and boy did I get some great shots! The place was enormous so I was even able to get group shots of 10-15 people listening to a live demo.)

I am sure that people "see" the world differently and this is what draws them to certain lens as their favorite WAL as well as the "conditions" and types of scenes they want to capture. It would be interesting to design some kind of study on this.

I've only been shooting for a year so maybe I shouldn't be commenting :o, but the last picture would be a nice "panaroma" type shot (IMHO) if you cropped out some of the top (see attached).

Agree with others...don't hesitate on a DAL 55-300..this lens rocks (caveat is: in good light)...you can get nice "close up" flower shots and people shots with nice bokeh and its also great for sports.
