You can start off with no flash if you like, especially for outdoors. If there is plenty of sunlight then you should be ok, even though I suggest using apertures of f8-f16 to maximise dof. ive worked handheld with f11 and 1/100s outdoors plenty of times. The Raynox is tricky at first but you just need to practise to get the hang of it. If you have a tripod, it definitely helps. I find that an external flash used off camera, gives lovely lighting and pop to my subject, so that is something to consider also.
I use it with my DA55-300 a lot, never heard anyone using it with the newer PLM version, so might want to ask around first

Kiron 105mm f2.8 stuck aperture ring

as far as i know, the pin should be in the pressed position when moving from f2.8 all the way to f22 and then pop up just short of the A setting and to get it to lock into A, user must press the pin and turn the ring. On the Kiron, the pin is depressed all the time even when clicking through the all of the apertures and ring stops on f22. The pin can be pressed manually only on f16 but is very tough to do so.
Aperture is wide open on f2.8 and works fine so no problem there. need to get some JIS screwdrivers, since my philips seems no good in this situation

if anyone can direct me to a DIY or a repair manual of the lens it would be very helpful.

Kiron 105mm f2.8 stuck aperture ring

Hi

Just received my Kiron 105mm today after a frustrating 1.5 months due to customs delay. Got back to home to test the lens and it seems that the aperture ring moves from f2.8 to f22 but cannot go past f22 onto f32 and the "A" setting. Long story short, aperture ring is not fully functional and cannot choose auto aperture. Tried forcing it but its of no use. It goes back to f2.8 again but unfortunately not past f22. Any ideas whats wrong and how to fix it? not sure if i want to send it back and search for another lens again. other than that, the lens is in pristine condition, so scratches, clean glass etc etc.

Apologies then for reaching this conclusion.reason behind it was that it seemed ever so slightly fuzzy to me and upon checking your EXIF in flickr, the focal length read 18mm. thought was too close to be 18mm so figured it was a crop.

I was away all day yesterday so just got the chance to post the winners from the Vibrant colors challenge. Well done to everyone, some great entries but only 3 must be chosen. Choice wasnt easy but as I was watching throughout the week, I did have my eye on a couple of photos. It was my first time hosting, plus the previous contest was the first one I posted in on the weekly challenges, even though Ive been around for a bit. Please bear in mind that I like giving constructive criticism as well, so please take any "negative" comments with a pinch of salt. I like it when people tell me their true opinion about my photos because it helps me get better and avoid mistakes that might not be obvious to me sometimes.

Firstly a few photos that didnt make the first 3 but are worth mentioning :

StephenHampshire - Im a big fan of abstracts and this has been done nicely. I also love the colors.

sealonsf - Great photo. Love the red against the blue. If this had been shot at f8 and if you had avoided the long end of your 18-135, it wouldve made a big difference in sharpness and IQ. probably wouldve got rid of those nasty CA's as well on the rocks. Still its a lovely photo.

Top banana - Lovely colors, and good sharpness to the flower in the right place.

atupdate - cool shot. if that had been a different colored bug (green or red), it wouldve added another color to the photo and definitely wouldve bumped up the interest. Nevertheless, great shot.

geomez - Love the lilac and yellow and that Tammy is tack sharp. I can imagine how small that insect was. cool shot!

slowpez - Once again the Tammy shows how good it is. Great colors and lighting against the black background. I quite like this photo and I keep coming back to have another look.

Anyway here are the winners.....

3rd place : noelcmn - Very original, very colorful and great lighting. This is all about vibrant colors and I love the composition. My only criticism however would be that it seems like its been heavily cropped since I can see some degrade in IQ. Had this been a tad sharper it probably wouldve been my fave.

2nd place : jchorst - This was almost a tie with 1st place. I love the colors, the scenery, the reflection...simply beautiful. However, I had to knock off half a point for the slight noise in the sky. Dont know if this was shot at high ISO or if it has something to do with PP, but this was my only criticism. Nevertheless a great shot you should be proud of.

1st place : charliezap - Amazing shot and congrats in winning this challenge. Fell in love with it the moment I saw it. There are so many good things going on. Firstly it fits the bill in the vibrant colors topic. Secondly, the combination of the various shades of blue with the sunset and how the shades of orange catch the clouds, its truly breathtaking. Love the shapes of the clouds, the silhouettes, the birds in the foreground, everything about this photo. Well done once again!!

Thanks for putting up with me and I hope ive been a good host and fair judge

aperture block failed twice.once under warranty and got it fixed and the 2nd time out of warranty and I replaced it with a k-3II. Its a known issue with a lot of k-30/k-50 cameras.

Thanks again geomez for the recognition and for being a great host to the previous challenge.

My theme this week is "vibrant colors". I love photos with vibrant and bold colors since I think they add that wow-factor to an otherwise simple photograph. We all know how a powerful color can be vital to an image, but we also know that too many dominant colors can make an image confusing. These colors must work beautifully with each other in order to make the image pleasing to the eye. Lets see how you can use this to your advantage to showcase your beautiful photos.

Rules for all the Weekly Challenges: Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week. This challenge is Pentax/Ricoh/Samsung cameras only.

Everyone is eligible to send in their best interpretation of the given theme, as long as the photo is taken with a Pentax/Ricoh/Samsung camera. Themes can be subject-oriented or technique-oriented. The host/judge will post winners' names in a separate thread, and will send a private message (PM) the winner to pass the baton on. The winner will then host the next Challenge, and post a new thread with a subject or theme of his/her choosing.

Contest ends next Sunday 30th July

Below are a couple of examples. Good luck!

happened to me a few times.what I do,with the rear screen facing me, i place the tip of a flat head screwdriver between the last 2 visible teeth of the cog on the left hand side, and with great caution push firmly to the left. it would be a good idea to use a thin mf cloth to place on top of the screwdriver for extra protection. always works but you need to take care without damaging the cog.ive done it 3-4 times so far without making a single scratch, so it is possible.good luck!

out of the 3 that you've listed get the DA35/2.8 if you're interested in macro as well. If not, then go for the DA35/2.4, best value for money and really sharp wide open. If you start looking at other options, then the list will go on....FA31ltd as already mentioned, Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art etc etc

LBA isnt easy my friend. if i were you id save for the FA31 since you have the other 2...or even consider the DA21 ltd instead. Unless you really need the WR and in that case id suggest the 16-85 :)
