Pentax K-1 as a wedding camera!

Yes, very happy.
It's big and heavy - but focusses quickly and image quality is better than DA* 16-50 on APS-C IMO.

It's on my K-1 most of the time, although i don't think any of the above images were shot with it.
They're mostly D-FA 70-200 and FA 77.

It's a heavy lump, but an excellent performer. I rented it from SRS Microsystems. I required a silent focussing lens, so my Tamron was out of the question.

I was so impressed with the speed and quality of the D-FA 70-200 that I'll be looking for one later this year.

Just shot my second ever wedding for friends with the K-1, FA Limiteds, D-FA 24-70mm and 70-200mm. I found it a great combo, excellent low light AF and noise performance.

A few shots.....

Why I won't buy a KP.

I certainly don't expect a D500 rival for 1100 - i'd expect such a camera to cost at least as much as the K-1 - but that's what i'd like to see Pentax release.
They don't currently have anything like this in their range and IMO it's what the K-3 replacement should be. I won't be selling my K-3 to buy a KP.

Because even at 1100 it isn't really an upgrade on my K-3. I'll wait for a Pentax that gives me all of the things I like about the K-3, but with less noise/faster AF and improved speed/buffer - basically a D500/7DMkIII rival is what I want.

I have a K-1 for most of my shots, i'd like a better APS-C body for nature/sports.

Focus Peaking Color Choice

I've never understood why Pentax haven't allowed for this feature. I've never liked the current choice of a white outline for focus peaking.

Pentax "KP" DSLR registered in Indonesia

At $1100 it's a pointless exercise IMO. I strongly suspect the KP will be a poor seller. Pentax should be pulling their resources into cameras that are a significant upgrade on their current models. This clearly isn't that. The K-70 is still relatively new. We're told KP isn't a K-3 replacement. It isn't mirrorless or micro 4/3 - so why do it?

For the record I may sound like a whiny old git, but the KP is the first Pentax product I ever recall complaining about on here. I'm usually very pro Pentax. Just suppose I want them to catch CaNikon in the areas where they are found lacking. I think the KP is a distraction from what Pentax should be working towards. Please feel free to disagree with me.

I'd happily pay K-1 money (Pentax usually underprices the opposition after all) for a D500 competitor. YMMV of course, but I want a tangible upgrade - not gimmicks.

Since we will now have the KP (i'm unsure where it fits - we're told it's not the K-3 II successor) I want the true K-3 successor to be a super APS-C body - something like Nikon's D500 - awesome AF capabilities in a Pro Crop body. Something tells me Pentax won't have advanced their AF tracking enough to deliver this. I really hope they prove me wrong. There's nothing in this KP body that makes me want to replace my old K-3.

Can't say first impressions are good. It looks rough/unfinished somehow - like someone threw all of the components into a bag and this is how it came out.
Pentax REALLY need to start delivering on areas where they fall behind - like AF tracking performance and lens choice. Gimmicky bodies with swappable grips are not going to take the brand forward.
I've been a keen user of the brand for a while now -but enough is enough. Let's see some tangible progress where it's really needed!

Another possibility, is there a Pentax rental dealer in your area?

On APS-C a 50-135mm would probably be the ideal candidate for the shoot IMO.

I have a couple of weddings and events to cover for friends in the coming months. So this week I treated myself to Portrait Pro Studio in their January sale - so here's a little play/edit with some portraits I shot earlier.

Pentax DFA 24-70 On the K-1

For my tastes the image isn't sharp enough. I own the K-1 and D-FA 24-70, so know them both pretty well. I wouldn't choose to shoot two persons on different focal planes at f2.8 (the depth of field is too shallow at such short distance IMO). I'd probably stop down to at f5.6 and go from there.

Congratulations on your new acquisition though - the 24-70 is a great partner to the K-1.

I have both and agree completely.
I'll take the '77 when I need a compact kit - otherwise the '85 smokes it!
