Great idea, Travis!
Some very stunning entries too, my compliments to everybody!

This is difficult...this year has been really productive, 10 is way too low
Anyway, a small contribution from me.

Sigma 100-300 F4 APO EX DG

I bought the the 100-300F4 together with the sigma 1.4 TC. The minute I got home I did a complete test (on tripod, 2sec delay) with and without TC: https://www.flickr.com/photos/tenznl/sets/72157626200136484

No problem at first, IQ with the TC was very good imho but when I started using the combo in the field (handheld) I was really disappointed...most of the time. Mostly the images were somewhat blurry but from time time it did produce very clean and sharp IQ.
So I tried over and over and really started to hate this TC but I wasn`t able to pinpoint the culprit. Finally, and this took me 2 years, it hit me...SR was messing things up. The body doesn`t recognise the TC so it`s compensating for 300mm instead of 420mm. Tested the combo with SR off et voila...a tad softer due too the TC but no more blur.

To make a long story short, the sigma 1.4x TC is a good match but beware of the SR. Don`t know if the Pentax TC is better but it does have the benefit of being recognized by the body. From what I`ve seen it quite good with the DA* 300mm F4 and the sigma is imho in the same league. Just checked the prices and the sigma doubled since I`ve purchased it and the Pentax is even more expensive here in Europe. Not an easy choice if I had to make it now. Best way to go would be testing them both before buying.

FWIW: This was my theory for the K5 as that body doesn`t support TC`s but last weekend I forgot to turn SR off on my K-3 and again most shots were blurred. Exif says 300mm instead of 420 so again the SR is working to compensate for a faulty focal length.

First of all, the bare lens has allways better IQ 1 on 1 but 420mm vs 300mm is a significant gain in reach and has often been the difference between the front and the back of the animal or bird :)
The thing is, when 420mm is too long, you still can zoom out with this combo. Putting on the TC when you`re suddenly in need of extra reach mostly leaves you with nothing.
One thing though, AF lockingspeed is slower and the combo will hunt more with the TC on. I guess working with a TC is allways a compromise.

And for that reason I`m still debating whether to get the new DFA150-450 or the sigma 300 F2.8

It`s in good hands by the look of your sample :)

Nice one.
Same in Holland, yesterdaymorning the world was suddenly white. Got 15cm of snow in my garden during the day.
This morning was good, forced myself out of bed early and went out with the smc DA15. Wasted lots of precious time clearing the car (the melted snow frooze again during the night) but I managed to get this one:

Haven`t shot too many birds or BIF`s lately but last month I had a go at the annual murmuration of European Starlings. These shots were captured in 2 different locations over a period of 2-3 weeks because the birds weren`t really cooperative (short and low flying).

Hi guys, how are you all doing? Lots of great images and news (only went back 10 pages but Travis` departure is quite a shock)

It has been a while since I`ve last posted here due to moving to a new house. Also my K5 died after my wife dropped it from the couch.
A few weeks ago I allready picked up a K-3 but somehow it took me until last week to go out and shoot some birds.

The tracking and focussing have indeed great improvements over the K-5 and the 24Mp AA-filterless images are a pleasure to work with (allthough quite large).
Most of the work is done and the smoke is finally settling down so I expect some more spare time for shooting from now on.

For the last 2 months I`ve been busy (new house) and had little time for photography. Also busted my K5 so I got a K3 instead. Last weekend there was finally an opportunity for a decent shoot and guess which lense I grabbed first and made me forget the other 3 in the bag?

Great work as usual, guys. Sorry for being a little absent, things are a little hectic atm.

Finally sorted and developed the Black Tern-session of last weekend, I went back sunday and took a fellow pentaxian with me. He was really kind and let me test his K-3.
The last 2 are with the borrowed K-3 and I have to admit...24MP and 8fps is nice to have :)

Thank you, Na Horuk :)

Good suggestions, I`ll try them all out. The thing is, this image is so way out of my normal style of shooting that I even have to reconsider my PP-techniques.

Did some recon today and found an interesting site with black Terns. The light was kinda harsh but I`m gonna give it another try early tomorrow morning.
But I managed to capture this (with is a very difficult test for the K5 with siggy 100-300 F4 and TC, these birds are fast):

Caught this firey sunset last week, the reddish colors were off the scale due to the amount of sahara desert dust in the atmosphere. This shot was the start of one of the most crazy-colored sunsets I`ve seen:

I do have both the 14mm and the 15mm :)
These guys are completely different. The 15mm is a nice wide landscapelens but the 14mm enters allready the ultra-wide realm (more dramatic distortion, which can be real nice if you know how to handle it). While the 14mm does some pretty landscapes too, it`s pretty prone to flare. OTOH it`s easier to use in lowlight and indoors, not only because of the aperture but also due to size.

Since you are relatively new to Pentax (not sure if that means photography in general?), I would suggest a zoom.
If you want the best for money, get the DA12-24. If your budget is more tight, I suggest you look into the 10-20/24 range like the sigma 10-20 or the tamron 10-24.

Offcourse, the 15mm is a really nice lens and you can`t go wrong with that. But be careful...buying limiteds is addictive :)

Hi guys,

Here I tried something totally different than usual, something abstract as I saw this explosion of jellyfish gracefully drift under water in the changing colors of the seawater.
There is something that I like about this image, allthough it`s far from perfect. I don`t know, maybe it`s the colors, the painterly feeling or just the illusion of glowing forms beneath a blanket of blues and greens...

On the other hand, this could use some rethinking and improvement. I guess you love it or hate it. Please share your thoughts :)
Kind regards,
Jacco
