Flickr Explore Explained, sort of

I just had a look at my Explored photos to see if there was a theme. I have 15 photos in Explore most of which are Landscape and were taken with Pentax.

K3 + Sigma 10-20 - landscape - 3 pics
K3 + Sigma 10-20 - street - 1 pic
Ricoh gr - landscape - 4 pics
K3 + sigma 17-50 - landscape - 2 pics
K3 + da40xs - street - 1 pic
k30 +da35 f2.4 - street - 1 pic
Canon 6d + ef50mm f1.8 - street - 1 pic
Canon 6d + ef40mm f2.8 - street - 1 pic
Canon 6d + ef40mm f2.8 - landsacpe - 1 pic

I post more street photos than landscape and I also tend to use the Canon more than the Pentax. However, my Pentax photos are the most Explored. The algorithm doesn't lie!

Hiking Camera

I do a lot of hiking in the mountains and find the Ricoh GR is the best solution. Small, light, reliable and cheap second hand. Awesome picture quality and the 28mm is perfect for landscape. Definitely worth checking out if you don't already have one.

I would ask in Yodobashi camera or maybe in a Kitamura Camera, they might be able to recommend somewhere local.

Wide primes for astro

Similar to MainNative I find the Rokinon 14mm a little 'soft' at 2.8 and usually stop down to 3.2. or 3.5 to get sharper results.

Surprisingly my preferred lens for astro-photography is the Sigma 10-20mm. Although its not a prime I can leave it open for longer, and I find I get better results than with the Rokinon.

Thanks so much for all the very detailed responses! There is a huge amount of useful information here. I am going to take my time and look through all the suggestions slowly. I must admit the the idea of doing markets and galleries was particularly interesting, its something I hadn't thought about before.

Thanks again, I will let you know how it goes...

Portfolio hosting, marketing and selling

I would like to start selling some of my fine art style photos. What do you have the most luck with when it comes to hosting your portfolio, and marketing and selling your prints? Do you opt for your own website using something like WordPress or Squarespace? Or do you find it better to go through a site like 500px, Etsy, or similar? Are stock photo sites still a viable option?

Any experiences or insights would be highly appreciated.

It looks like you are someone who is looking for a camera that you can use for the long term. In this case pay the extra and get the KP or K3ii (not the K3). Avoid the K70 because of potential apeture blcok issues as it gets older.

Light zoom for hiking

Hi all,
I love my Sigma 17-50 2.8 on my K3, its the perfect combination. However, the weight of this combination is just getting me down. I am a regular hiker and I am looking for a lighter zoom. I occasionally go back to the kit 18-55 but find the results disappointing. I also use the GR but I still prefer the results and flexibility of the DSLR with a zoom

What is worth considering? Is the 18-135 worth considering? I know its lighter but I am concerned about the image quality.

I am also considering buying a lighter camera like the K70 or KP just to get the weight down.

Any thoughts or experiences more than welcome!

Does anyone shoot video with their Pentax?

I've dabbled in video for a while. First with my k30, then K3. Then I moved on to a Canon 6d. I've also played around with a Go Pro Hero 7. However, now I find I get get the best results with a Panasonic camcorder. I use it for my home videos as well as making teaching videos for work. In contrast to the current thinking I find the quality I get from a camcorder (as an amateur) better than from a DSLR.

For editing I really like Open Shot, its open source and really easy to use.

Autofocus on K3

I can comment on the K3 but not the KP. I have had the k3 for 3 years and have had ongoing AF problems. It is fast but most certainly NOT accurate. (This is through the viewfinder, accuracy in Live View is fine). I have tried adjusting the lenses and cleaning the Af module but still the problem persists. This may be a one off problem although I have seen similar comments on this forum. I have an old Canon 6D which I use for portraits. While the AF is much slower it is considerably more accurate and reliable. If AF accuracy is important you might wan't to avoid the K3

I was recently in the same boat as you looking for a Lightroom alternative. I tried Raw Therapy, Dark Table and DXOs editor. In the end I found I got the best results with Raw Therapy. And for me it was the most comfortable after coming from Lightroom. So another shout out for Raw Therapy :)

GIMP vs Darktable or something else?

Cost. I really don't like the subscription system.

---------- Post added 12-12-19 at 07:39 PM ----------

There are a lot of useful ideas here that I hadn't considered. I wasn't aware that Gimp and Darktable could be linked - this sounds like a great solution. Also someone mentioned NikCollection could be added to Gimp? I haven't checked it out yet but that would seal the deal if it can be done. I have downloaded Raw Therapy to give that a try too. Cheers!

I am quitting Adobe Lightroom at the end of the year and looking for some free editing software. From what I have read the above two free editors can do pretty much what Lightroom can do. However, having downloaded them they both look to have quite steep learning curves. Is there one that is preferable? Or is there one I have missed?

I work mainly in black and white. I particularly need to be able to control the color filters in the black and white conversion.

Controlling highlights and shadows is also important for me.

Any thoughts or ideas are most welcome.

Street photography advice

I do street portraits in Japan. I have found the best places to go to are tourist places. People are a lot more friendly and relaxed than they would be on their way to work or similar. I just hang around and when I see someone who catches my eye I just say "Hi, you look great. I am going to take your photo" and that's it. I have never had any problems. I am currently doing the 100 stranger challenge on Flickr where I write about my experiences. People are FAR more open to having their photo taken then you think!

Can't believe that smoke is reaching you down in NZ!!

Some nice photos from everyone. Its interesting how cutting the blacks give a more film like look - Its kind of counter intuitive.

I follow this amazing photographer on Flickr. I was wondering if anyone out there knows how he achieves that lovely matte film like effect in his photos? Particularly the portraits. I will post some links below. I am not sure what camera he uses but I am assuming it is digital and he gets the effect post process. Thanks.

is owning a Samyang/Rokinon 14mm with tamron 17-50 worth it?

For wide-angle, I use the Samyang 14mm and the Sigma 10-20mm. I much prefer the Sigma for landscapes. It offers more versatility with the zoom and the AF - and the 10mm is super wide. Also, the Samyang suffers VERY badly from lens flare and isn't great under f4. So why not also consider the Sigma 10-20, its a really useful lens.

Online photo posting advice. Flickr? Instagram? Other?

Just another vote for Flickr. I have used it for a long time and found it safe and reliable. However, for friends and local networking I use Facebook. I have stopped using Instagram. It may be my age but I just didn't get along with it - the layout and the 'atmosphere' is all rather naff. It about getting followers at any cost. Many people/ business will follow you just in the hope of you following them back. I like the Flickr community, they are far more honest, welcoming and like minded. However, If you looking to build a local network, Facebook may be more appropriate.

Does anyone have K3 focus issues?
Posted By Alnjpn

Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the delay in getting back. I have been through and micro-adjusted all my lenses. This appears to have solved the issue for now. I haven't used them all in the field yet but with the ones I have, the focus is more reliable. Here are the adjustments:

DA21 f3.2 +9
DA35 f2.4 +6
DA40 XS +5
DA50 f1.8 +4
DAL 55-300 +3

Sigma 17-50 None

Sigma 10-20 None

Interestingly the adjustments get less as the focal length gets shorter - not sure why would that be.

Thanks again

Thanks. I will post some pics later. I have dodgy eyes and have adjusted the viewfinder. reading around it seems as though it might just be that all the lenses need microadjustment. I will try that again too.
