Havenīt really used my Mamiya C330. Itīs a nice camera and the results are good, but somehow I end up using my Pentax 6x7 or bronica gs-1 more often.

This was with the 105mm f3.5 blue dot lens wide open on fp4+. Semi-stand in rodinal 1:100 for 60 minutes.

Very good detail and clarity on these shots! How do you "scan" with your K-3? Do you have some kind of negative holder? What kind of macro lens are you using?

Itīs been a while since I last posted here. Here are some photos from a recent trip. All with Me super and pentax A50mm 17. lens.

Tri-x 400 @ 1600, developed in Rodinal 1:100, semi stand for 60 minutes. 10 inversions at the beginning and around 30 min.
Some of them came a bit dusty at the scanning but I donīt mind.

Poll: Going (semi)pro with Pentax - Is it a good call?

I would like to make a different opinion:

I have been doing some semipro shooting myself, both with Pentax and Canon FF. I have K-5 and the FA limiteds, which are of course great, but, if I were you, and not so heavily invested in the brand yet, I would check out the Canikon FF options. If you can borrow or rent the equipment and try it real-life it will give you more information than any writing in the forums.

For me it was a revelation to find out that the ancient Canon 5D had much better AF than K-5. I also tried Nikon D3, Canon 5D mk III and Canon 6D which eventually became my choice. Depending of course what type of shooting you are going to do, but I feel that for events, weddings etc, FF camera is hard to beat. Yes, you can almost get similar kind of pictures with fast lenses in crop camera, but to get the job done, itīs easier to just go with the FF flow.

Also, check out the flash and the service options for your gear. Canikon offers extensive programs for pro shooters.

There is no reason to get too emotionally attached to the camera gear, or any brand, you would need to find the thing that works for you best. For me, itīs a combination of Pentax and Canon, but Iīm soon going to go full-time canon, just for the convenience.

thatīs my 0.002 €

Nikon D750

Well, I just recently made that decision, and it was very easy: Canon has the lenses I want to use. They have good wireless RF flash system, the new bodies have VERY quiet shutter sound (as opposed to the D750) and most importantly the colour output is something that pleases my eyes. There is till plenty of DR in the Canon sensors, and I have never encountered a situation where it was not enough. YMMV

The 5D is a great camera. The lcd is small and itīs old tech, but still it beats my K-5 in AF speed and accuracy  I just got the 6D, but I still use the 5D for many things, for example portraits, because of the marvelous skin tones. Canon has some very nice and cheap primes.the build quality is not that great, but they are light weight, and have good iq check out: Ef 35 f2 (non IS), EF 50 1.8 and EF 85 1.8.

Thanks, Tuco

I will put these two cameras on a real test next week, as I will be photographing a PhD defence on two different locations. I will take the k-5 +FA limiteds and The Canon gear as well.

Hi everyone,

I have finally dipped my toes into digital FF waters! I got a good deal on the original Canon 5d + EF 50 1.8 mk I and have since bought a EF35 f2 as well. I have really enjoyed the camera and havenīt touched my K-5 since. Itīs amazing that the AF on this "ancient" beast seems to be far ahead of the K-5. Yesterday I took pictures of my son while he was swinging in the playground and almost 100% of the shots were in focus when using the EF 35 wide open and servo focus.

I never thought that I would end up in to the Canon camp, as I was really looking for a Nikon D700.. but in the end it was the colours that this old Canon produces that I fell in love with. At first the controls felt weird, but now itīs really easy to use, and the camera feels very good in hand.

Anyway, hereīs some photos: the first one is with the 50mm the rest with the 35mm @ f2

Great!

Iīm sure you will love it! It will slow down the picture taking process, as there are many things to consider before pushing the shutter, but after a while you will get used to it. Personally I havenīt shot any landscape photos with digital since I got the GS-1 - it just feels "right"

Please post some pictures to the forums MF section when you get some film developed.

Hi,

Iīm not sure what would be the best way to do it, because I have been using only 6x7 backs. It says in the manual that there are different types of viewfinders available and some of them have grid lines for 645 and 6x6. Check here in the manual pages 30-31:

Thanks for your kind words,

Yes you can use off camera flashes with the GS. And the best part is that all the lenses are leaf shutter lenses, so you can synchronize flash at all available shutter speeds.

I have used some cheap radio triggers without any problems or misfires. You need to attach the transmitter with a cable to the synch port and you are good to go. :)

If the price is right, go for it! Shooting medium format is very, very addicting and very rewarding. After watching the beautiful output these massive negatives give, itīs very hard to go back to shooting digital.

Hi,

I think the most important thing is to decide which format you want to shoot? Iīm using Bronica GS-1 and Pentax 6x7 + Mamiya C330 (6x6), and to me 6x7 is the "better" format. Shooting in squares can be fun, but it can be also tricky composition wise.

I really like the GS-1. The lenses are very good and they are quite small in size. The camera body is made of plastic so itīs not too heavy either. The Film MF gear is very cheap and itīs not that uncommon for people to have several different cameras and systems.

Hereīs some pictures i have taken with the GS-1:

Sorry to hear about the delay.

I have tipped my toes into another camera system as Iīm getting more and more clients, so I will have service close by at least to the other brandīs equipment. (I live 1 km away from JAS service center) This whole service episode might just push me completely into the other camp.

Please keep us posted.

If you could only spend $600 dollars for a new camera, which would you choose?

Thatīs a very good summary! Indeed, with the small LCD it almost feels like you are shooting with a film camera. Add to that the shutter sound which resembles a film cameraīs film advance mechanism. Maybe the AF speed / accuracy is related to the lenses used. I have tested the Servo AF on my son when he was going downhill towards me on a sledge. I could nail the focus much easier than with my K-5 and FA limiteds.

anyway, this camera is a real bargain, and like you said itīs probaply all the camera that I will ever need.

I have just acquired an old Canon 5D + 50 1.8 mk I for less than 400€. It has been a real eye-opener. Finally a viewfinder that is big and bright and the AF seems to be very good as well, at least much better in Servo mode than my K-5. But the best thing is the IQ of the photos: the colours and the skin tones are just perfect! Even though the camera is "old" it is very fast to operate, feels good in hand and I seem to reach out for it instead of my K-5 just because itīs more fun to shoot with.
