Loving my first Pentax!!!

Welcome to the fold! :) That sounds like a nice set of lenses, I had for a long time just the K100D with 18-55, FA50/1.4, and 50-200. The 50-200 is nice and light and you'll always carry it with you. If I had a choice, I'd probably get the FA35/2.0 first - I find the 50 a touch too long. As others have said, you can also try find an A-series lens which is manual focus but exposure is automatic.

Also, some great bargains can be found on the 16-45/4 at the moment. It is a much better lens than the 18-55 and the extra 2mm are great if you love wide angle.

Enjoy!

I upgraded from a DL to a K100D when the K100D first got released. Between the 11-point AF and the SR feature, my ratio of keepers increased substantially. I would only buy a DL as a backup body as it's a bit lighter. However, as a primary camera, the K100D is well worth the extra $100.

Yup! And I suspect those same lenses might perform even better on the new sensor as per my post above.

Agree with the OP fully!

One thing about the new sensor that everyone appears to be overlooking is the more direct light path in the new sensor - in several places, they claim "improved image quality from older lenses". Could this mean the end of CA? Nikon D300 users have been reporting vastly reduced CA from the same lenses that used to exhibit such problems in the D200. Perhaps Pentax knew of this upcoming sensor and that's why the focused on resolution at the expense of CA in designing the DA* zooms? If so, that would shut up quite a few critics of the DA* lenses, especially in the case of the DA* 16-50 f/2.8.

PEF, because it takes up less space. I convert to DNG in import.

Think Tank also make some very similar bags - haven't seen them in person, but they are getting rave reviews.

Hmmm, looking at these again. I retract my earlier post! :o

The only thing that still looks a bit dodgy is the second zero in the K200 inscription. What I thought was obvious signs of photoshopping around the shutter area isn't - in the closeup shot it's clear that they just changed the plastic shape to accomodate the green button. Also, just noticed that the lens in pic #4 above is the DA* 16-50 - I don't remember such a promotional shot of the original K100D/Super.

It seems from the battery door that the camera still uses AA batteries! I wonder if the grip takes extra batteries, or if it's just for convenience? It doesn't seem very big, certainly not big enough for the D-LI50 cells nor another set of AAs. But it's not impossible that it contains a fixed rechargeable cell or maybe at least some place to store SD cards?

Nice find! Dying to see the K20D now :)

Photoshop IMO. It's a K100D with a couple of K10D elements (front of the grip notably). Move on folks, nothing to see here.

Oh, they work just fine. I've used them with my K100D and my K10D, and with Nikon SB-24 and SB-26 flashes, and they're hard to fault. Sure, the range could be greater, and the build quality is not exemplary, but at the price they're a great way to get started. Do note that the SB-26 has a built-in optical slave, so you could trigger one flash with the Cactus V2 and have any number of slaved SB-26s fire automatically at the same time. I did this once when I was only carrying a single Cactus receiver, and it worked just fine.

Hi Stewart,

Thanks for sharing your setup details and experience! How are you finding having P-TTL on your remote strobes? Is it worthwhile? Do you generally run P-TTL with FEC on individual flashes, or do you shoot manual mostly? I currently have the first type of setup you described (radio triggers and manual flashes) and it works fine for me, but I'm wondering if there are any control benefits of going P-TTL? Also, is there much you can do from the camera, or does changing settings like power of individual flashes still require you to walk to that flash and fiddle with its controls?

Regards,
Pavel

Pentax 16-45 & FA 75-300 zooms. Recommended?

As others have said, 16-45 is certainly very highly recommended! Also consider the Sigma 17-70 - not as wide, and not constant aperture (helps if you use manual flash), but it has longer reach.

I don't think the FA-J 75-300 is anything to write home about, I'd probably go with the Tamron 70-300 based on what I've seen posted on the net.

I have the DA 50-200 and have been happy with it, although I rarely shoot telephoto so my impressions are perhaps somewhat limited.

New Tokina 11-16 f2.8: how about a Pentax SDM version?

Somehow, I'd prefer the bigger range of the 12-24 lens. The larger aperture is nice, but again, who uses these for low light shooting? Choice is good though, more lenses from Pentax, especially SDM ones, would be great.

Could you please post some examples? Crop a few small portions showing the blurry/soft parts from some of your images, and post it without resizing. Do you understand the relationship between ISO and shutter speed? Do you know how to judge whether a certain SS is hand-holdable? (Reciprocal rule of thumb?)

This is a very good sign! And I am glad they're not trying to compete on price with the Amazons of the world, I think it's great to have an exclusive Pentax-branded online store even if it doesn't generate tons of profits. And I agree with thibs, hopefully they will expand with some international presense soon!
