I like the suggestions of the 18-135 or the 16-85 over the kit lens. But of course go with the kit lens if it fits your budget.

I got my son a K70 for his 21st birthday and later got him a used Tamron 17-50 f2.8 from Amazon for about $175. The IQ is either better or equal to my Pentax 16-50 f2.8 and it's quite a bit lighter. He also has my 55-300 on permanent loan and loves it.

I agree.

I have the 18-135, and it lives on my K-3 (or, more recently, my K3-III). Either of these would be a substantial upgrade, in both quality and zoom range, over the 18-55 kit lens.

We got Rob fixed up with a charger.

He and his brother stopped briefly at my house this evening to pick up my spare charger for his K-1 D-Li90 battery (which seems only fitting, since it was a spare to me, from my K-1 purchase - I've been using my K-3 charger for many years and never even bothered to unpack the K-1 unit until today).

I live only a mile or so off their route to the Grand Canyon.

Indeed. I mentioned as much earlier and I have used this option myself. I recently ordered groceries and items from a Walmart where my son now lives for college and picked it up on the trip to see him. The Walmart app is a great boon when doing this as it can be used to signal arrival for pickup etc.

Thanks for all your input. I ended up purchasing a used K-3 Mark II. It was $1000 less than a Mark III. It is also heads above my K100D Super. I balanced budget and performance and after 5 minutes I know I made a good decision. All of your input was helpful. Now I just need to learn how to take advantage of it's features.

Need Help with Pentax Auto Focus Extension Tube for K mount

How to Calculate the New MFD of a Lens When Using an Extension Tube

It might help to calculate the theoretical differences with and without the extension. If I did the math right (not sure itís early in the morning and Iím not confident of my results) the mfd for a 25mm tube on the da 560 changes from 5.6m to 4.9m and the magnification charges from 0.1x to 0.15x which seems like a large change to me. Theory isnít the same as practice however.

The da 560 is probably a good candidate for using a close up lens - but the large front element will make it a costly one if a high quality is needed - although Iíve had success using a smaller close up lens on a larger filter thread with adapter rings.

Just got my K-70 in today and it does indeed have or had ;-) a shutter count of 10, the pictures really exaggerated the "dust" or the seller gave it a quick wipe down because it arrived cleaner than the pictures. I removed the UV lens filter from lens, and lens from body; things were pristine. Smelled brand new inside, sorry I'm weird. All in all, so far I'm very pleased with my purchase. Now I'm off to YouTube to checkout some tips and tutorial vids.

Wadge22-my fault as well as I didn't see the rest of your post, which btw had great information, and thought the one initial line was your only response. After seeing the rest of your post and the emoji I felt bad for my response as I definitely got your humor! Yea, Im so glad I bought that 250/600 back in the day and if I remember right my Gramps got 30% off bringing that lens to about $4500 in 99 but I could be wrong. I shared the cost with a buddy that was also wanting to get into the game. He no longer has any desire to shoot so it resides at my house full time. Ill post of pic of it because it seems to be a pretty rare bird. Your post is a wealth of info, I think your right, I need to see if I can maybe pick up a used K1/K3 and work with the 5.6 lens. Ill post some pics from this Saturdays games. This forum is great for us practice squad guys, you pros give me so much info to chew on, and I love the fact that its almost all Pentax specific. And your right about the KEH 300mm lens....with my skill set I have to have the auto focus, no way I could shoot a game manually.

---------- Post added 08-31-22 at 02:38 PM ----------

Angerdan-Upgrading my body seems to be the consensus here. Get a better camera before making a lens decision. I will definitely take the advice and start the search. Thanks for the input!

---------- Post added 08-31-22 at 02:41 PM ----------

Im in Denver. Been hunting for a long time. The Pentax 300mm F2.8 AF pops up on Ebay in Japan periodically, but Ebay seems like such a big gamble. I think based on the others suggestions I need to upgrade my camera and work with the lenses I have, then re-evaluate.

Hello everyone,

Well!!! in a very short time at Park Cameras, without hesitation, I ended up buying the used KP with only 754 shutter counts and clearly almost as good as brand new, in the box with all it's extras.

The moment the camera was unpacked and put into my hands - 'scuse my gushing here - I immediately felt "at one" with this little gem and so did the camera with me. "Love at first hold" (I know ) There was absolutely no second thinking on my part if I should look further. As it turned out, they did not have the K3iii in stock, more being on the way, but I actually felt very comfortable with the price I paid for it plus giving me plenty left over for a good lens or two.

In this area, Park also had limited stock, the new DA 16-85 was £700 so I settled for the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-f4.0 DC Macro OS HSM Contemporary as suggested by @mlag - thank you - being in stock and very reasonably priced.
I decided that this would be a good choice for now to carry on with, to get to know my new 'baby' :-P better before splurging on something high-priced that may not suit my needs in the end anyway.

I tried the two together at Park Cameras and was honestly very happy with the results, brief as it was. The camera feels really comfortable and good in my hands, I like that it's smaller, and lighter and will definitely perfectly suit my street photography as well.

I didn't mention that going back to 2012, I started collecting the Takumar vintage lenses, SMC and S-M-C with MK42 and PK lens fittings and they are a dream to use with quality adaptors on my film and digital cameras eg Canon 70D and of course the K10. So it'll be fun trying them on the KP.

This has been a wonderful exercise for me, you all gave me so much more to consider which definitely led me to finally make the right choice. All the research I did on the KP showed very strong points as being the right choice for me.

And to those who mentioned that perhaps the K3iii didn't quite suit my needs, I do believe you were right so thank you too. In retrospect, I honestly believe now that it would prove to be "Too much camera" for too little use from me.

The K70 did appeal as well which I also looked at thoroughly but again, those suggesting that given its age, KP and K3ii were a far better choice.

You have all been wonderful, If I hadn't started this thread and taken your advice, I am sure I would have been lured by G.A.S and then suffered post-retail blues. (Don't we all?)

So again, many many thanks, I truly am overwhelmingly grateful for all your comments and will shortly be posting some images.
Thank you and bless you all
Dinah xx

A huge thank you to everyone on this post for taking the time to give me your detailed thoughts, ideas and tips on which camera I should go for.
I certainly wasn't expecting so many responses all of which have given me lots to think about and consider. Thank you.

I hope that in writing this you will receive notification that this comment has been added. But I will also reply to each of you individually.

Yesterday afternoon, I took my K10 out for a walk with an SMC Pentax-M 1:4 200mm lens attached just to see how I felt about it but got only okay pictures and so decided time to let it go and put the camera up for sale, time to move on from there.

With this and given all the advice I've received above, I will no longer consider the K70 but some suggested considering the KP which also has excellent reviews (all Pentax has great reviews - what am I taking about!!!)

So what I will do is pop along to Park Cameras with both models in store and have a play with them, see which one makes my eyes sparkle.

Again, many many thanks to all of you, your comments are really very much appreciated.

Thatís a very good point. It seems to be a genuine Pentax adapter, which probably makes the £79 I paid for the Takumar AND the adapter a decent price. 😀

I definitely agree, the DA* 200mm f/2.8 + 1.4x TC could be the most logical choice. Despite its DA* designation, not DFA, this lens is fully compatible for FF use. Then, if not needing the longer reach, at 200mm you've got f/2.8 capability in a relatively compact lens! And it has WR construction with added protective lens coatings. This is one fine lens- I love mine!

These are some of the reference images from 20 years ago that I took using a Sony Cybershot P10 camera. I didn't have a tripod and the temperature was below freezing at the time, unfortunately there is too much motion blur, luckily I know the views well and can easily understand the FoV - these were all at the 35mm equivalent of around 35-40mm (which was too narrow for me at the time, though I didn't have any other choice):

For a fact the DFA28-105mm will struggle here and my Nikon 18-300mm will probably be worse off as the amount of optical compromises are far greater. I did test both in this type of low light setting and wasn't impressed....

If only my Samyang wouldn't flare up like bananas, it does this under low light too :(:

---------- Post added 08-14-22 at 10:37 AM ----------

Yeah... to be honest I don't know either! It probably is because many people call it big and heavy, though I doubt that would apply to my case since I'm gona be traveling with heavier pieces of kit anyway.

So on one hand, @wadge22 you have a point. The 15-30mm is very flexible and a single lens compared to 3 or 4 and the same price as all Irix 15,30,45 put together. I am just worried about sharpness and contrast especially under low light conditions.

Just found this: Pentax D FA 15-30mm 2.8: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

the sample images are incredible!

Ok I loose the 45mm side but from what I can see, it may not be a dramatic loss....

I do have that 50mm lens in M-mount. Works very well on the Fuji. The other lens is the SMC Pentax-M* 1:4 300mm. I've taken some lovely bird shots with that lens. Sadly, it'll probably be sacrificed in a part-ex for the K-1 . I have the XF100-400mm for the Fuji so I'm sure I'll cope.

---------- Post added 08-08-22 at 08:43 AM ----------

I did consider the Sony route myself, but I'm halfway to Pentax with some lenses so it made sense. And the 36MP sensor will be a bonus. Might be down the Gower this weekend if we can sort our acts out. Used to stay there a lot. Swansea is well placed isn't it.

Pentax Lens Recommendations For Close-Up Portraiture.

Just for the record, the DA*55 has no screw drive mechanism, so it can not be converted. It's SDM or it's nothing.
That said, it is an excellent lens in every other regard, and pretty much the optimal focal length for APS-C portraiture.

Yep, they are. I included only Pentax model flashes in that small list.

Oh that's awesone

Thank Wadge22 for this very useful comment. I needed someone to explain it to me like I'm 5.
I'm spending more time on my macro photography hobby (not much else to do here because of the war) so I needed to upgrade my kit a bit.

I think there is something wrong with the lens. It is trying to focus but can't quite manage it. I exchanged it with a Pentax lens which works perfectly.

Wadge22: First, what lens are you using?
I was using a SIGMA DC. I think the person I bought the camera from must have sold me a dud. I exchanged it with a Pentax lens from my old Pentax SLR.

Second, when you call it an AF button, you are talking about the sliding switch on the bottom left side, near the lens, correct?

Third, when it makes the buzzing noise, is the lens changing it's focus at all?
I can't say that I noticed but it sounds logical that the buzzing was as it was trying to focus automatically.

Last thing, are you able to move the focus manually when it's in MF mode? That would be done by rotating a ring on the lens.

I appreciate your advice which was spot on.

pschlute: It was just an ordinary garden shot I was trying to take in good light. I did eventually manually focus in MF put my sight isn't much good so the results weren't sharp enough. Great result with the Pentax lens! The lens barrel was probably turning while the buzzing was going on. It's great to know there are experts out there willing to help me. Thanks!

JohnX: I'm on the SE Coast of Australia. So happy to have found a place where help is there for the asking. Thanks!

AfterPentax Mark II: I was pushing the button as far as it would go but the buzzing continued. I noticed the hexagon in the view finder but not a green light. I will look out for it when I take my next shots. Thanks for the help.

Thank you all. I managed to solve this problem by myself but look forward to your friendly assistance the next time.

I am looking forward to shooting with the DA 21mm! It fills a need nicely in my lens quiver, and I can't wait to make some starbursts!
