Long exposure and the viewfinder

There was a time when lots of old, but unused Pentax straps were frequently offered on eBay.
The ones with 2 compartments, for the viewfinder cover and the flash shoe cover.

I bought these for all my many Pentax cameras.
I also think these straps were the best Pentax ever sold, not only for the compartments.

Use of LCD screen

My first Pentax was a ME Super.
I thought the 2 buttons to set exposure time were a good idea.
I could change time fast without taking my eye from the VF.
But I hated I could not see which time I had set before looking through the VF.

With the Super A ("Super Program" in the US) they introduced a small top LCD window showing the set exposure time.
While this feature was not available in all 4 modes (M, Av, Tv, P) I found it a great improvement.

I am still so used to it, I would not buy a body lacking a top LCD.
Specially as these now-a-days also show aperture, ISO, EV, and how many pictures may still fit on the SD card.

To have this infos in advance may save a lot of shots of people without "posing".
Once you look through the VF people will realize you may take a picture, and if you don't do it immediately, the result often may not look natural any more.

Of course using LV would be another option.
But for me, back screen/LV is ok with small cameras, with the heavier DSLRs I don't use it hand held.
Sometimes on a tripod, but I very seldom carry a tripod with me.

Welcome to this forum.

I am just curious.
Was there any specific reason not to post even once since you registered to this forum more than 4 years ago?

Reminds me of a schoolmate who stayed silent for years after registering in a German forum.
When I met her and asked, she said:
"Oh, my grand-daughter thought it was a good idea to register me without first asking. I was just too lazy to de-register."
Only years later, she sent her first posting.

Pentax KS2 aperture ring problem
Posted By RKKS08

You know the lens will only close the aperture during green button metering and while the exposure is taken?
All the rest of the time the aperture stays fully open (as long as the lens is fixed on the body).
Detached from the camera, the aperture will follow the ring setting.

This behaviour is different from that of M42 lenses.
Sorry if you already know all this.

Rare PK-A extension tubes on UK eBay

Mainly for members located in the EU:

There is a PK-A extension tube set on eBay.
Of course the auction could still end up at a creazy high price, as usual for this item,
the more as it ends on Sunday evening.

I already got such a part, and luckily quite cheap.
This was because the seller had not mentioned the contacts, and the pictures did not show them quite well.

A bit late to add information, but I don't think this is important enough to open a new thread.
Easily to find with a searching machine which prefers German language:

Rüdiger Maerz is either authorized support and/or repair center for
Canon
Ricoh
Pentax
Tamron
Tokina
Nissin
Rollei
and some more.

They also have their fingers somehow in the Canon Pro Service (renting and support on site).
Their main business seems to be with Canon anyway.

Ricoh Pentax do list them as their only authorized repair center in Germany.
I personally had never heard about them.

Hi from Germany.
I have not been in the Netherlands since my school days (in1963), but in the eighties quite often for business in Belgium.

By the way (but you probably know anyway): for M42 lenses with Pentax DSLRs you don't need stop down metering, Av will do alright.

ME Super Trigger Voltage

Back in the seventies I used flashes with trigger voltages up to 150V with my ME Super - never any problems.

Electronic-heavy cameras of that era were still rare.
I seem to remember Pentax advertised the LX to use a Mercury tube switch to separate the flash trigger circuit from the body electronics.

Can you recommend a good "budget" tripod?

Thanks to MarkJerling and macman24054 for the recommendation of the ZOMEI Z818

I cross checked with comparable offers and finally decided to order it.
I got it from a Germany located Chinese eBay seller for EUR 95.99, including VAT and postage.
So the net price is about the same as the reduced one on aliexpress.

Now I own 3 tripods for 3 very different applications:
  1. The small and extremely light weight but still sturdy Hama "Traveller mini pro" (749g including ball head), Aluminium.

  2. The ZOMEI Z818, more robust than the Hama and much more stable with extended legs, offers also monopod, 1733g, Carbon.

  3. A Velbon VS-3 which I bought used in good condition in the late 1980s. Not small, Aluminium, rather heavy, very sturdy. Center column can be rotated vertically in several steps down to 90 deg.

As I presently don't own a car, the Velbon doesn't see outdoor usage anymore; it is too heavy to carry around (for me, I'm now 72, wasn't a problem being 50/50+).

simple K5 plus prime wraparound case

I realize I am a bit late for this thread, but I think such a case could be easily made. It would not be so much different from the Pentax cases in the eighties.

I do own a leather body case which fits to the Lumix LX3 and LX5. Its design should also work for DSLRs.

It is a two part design, made of genuine leather.
One part (which can stay attached all the time) is a base plate with a 10-20 mm high vertical stripe covering front and sides, fixed at the tripod mount.
The second part covers all the rest of the camera and is fixed at the first part in two points, each one at the sides just above the base plate.
This second part can be rotated around these points, or detached completely.
The LCD and all controls would be accessible.

Unfortunately the version for the Lumix is not easily manageable, as the leather is quite thick and stiff. That is OK for the bottom plate, bot rotating the top can be a pain. But I think the design would work quite well if the top part would be made of a softer and thinner material. Maybe even better if it would be elastic.

Macro lens suggestions?

The 50mm macro was used quite a lot for reproductions (paintings and documents), especially because of its flatfield characteristic and lack of distortion.
The dedicated macro stand gave the correct distances for standard document sizes.

100mm would have made the arrangement unnecessary big.

Macro tubes with electric contacts

I had looked for these for years, no offers or offered at crazy prices..

Then I started to have a close look at each picture on eBay.
And about a year ago there was one, offered just as "auto", with very low quality pictures, but there seemed to be contacts, difficult to see.

And I was right: noname in Pentax design, looking unused in perfect condition, and working flawlessly.
I think I won the auction (Gixen!) with about EUR 20. I know I was lucky.

Do non-Pentax batteries really deliver more shots? (D-Li90)
Posted By RKKS08

That's a result of the electro-chemical processes when charging, which is enhanced by quick charging.
You will see it happening with the flat batteries, as used by P&S models of all brands. After about 3 years of usage even all of my original small Pentax batteries start bulging - and I do charge these only with the Pentax charger.

What I think is even dangerous is the fact, that many of the 3rd party chargers for small batteries don't provide the 3rd contact, or it is just a dummy. With this contact the batteriy tells the charger that it is too hot, and the charger should pause charging till the internal temperature becomes acceptable again. This behaviour of many aftermarket chargers could also explain the shorter charging time.

Best wide-angle lens for K-1?

The A20, A24, and A35 always got very positiv reviews not only on this forum.

For 20mm, you could also look for the m42 East German Zeiss lenses. If "landscape" includes Architecture, the older 4/20 should be better than the newer 2.8/20, as it is said to be distortion-free. For decades the Zeiss 4/20 was the "standard" WA lens for architecture photography worldwide.

If you already own the (APS-C) 4/16-45mm: on FF it heavily vignettes at 16-19mm, and has its sweet spots (contrary to the kit zoom) at the short and long end. But at 20-21mm it should provide decent results on FF. I probably would not buy one just to try this out, but if you happen to own it anyway . . .

Flash exposure using PTTL
Posted By RKKS08

@stevebrotI did not know the pre-flash power is controlled by the estimated subject distance.

Does this mean bouncing to a high ceiling may fool the pTTL system, as then the pre-flash output may be too weak to deliver usefull results?
That is, if the flash does not inform the camera that bouncing is used. I don't know whether this is the case.

Of course I could find out the answer by doing some tests, but at home the ceilings are not high enough, and you (or someone else) may already know the answer.

It's about the same with older models like the K200D, and even some more sophisticated old Optio models (I think the Optios A30 and A40).
With the K200D, Iso200 replaces Iso100 if correction is switched on.

Software Issues

I cannot speak for Windows 10.

Any imaging software should link the supported formats during installation. This may not work permanently, if the installation was not performed with admin rights. Also, I understand Windows 10 is in a permanent updating process; this means, if an update included the picture viewer, it may reverse the link settings to the viewer.

For most older windows versions, there were many different possibilities to change the link settings. Most of them need administrator rights, if the mod should be a lasting one.
One possibility was to access with a right click (in Explorer) the "open with". With admin rights, you would then be offered to make your selection a permanent one.
Some 3rd party file explorers offered a button for permanently linking an extension to a certain application program.
Some windows versions offered to link file extensions to windows own applications, but I am not sure whether the picture viewer was covered by this list (that's what @jatrax is suggesting).

And for specialists, it is always possible to change the behaviour by a registry hack - but I would not suggest this if you don't really know what you are doing. The problem is, that mods will be needed in several different parts of the registry. If you forget one of them, erratic behaviour could be the result.

And always keep in mind, that linking a file extension to a certain program may not be always convenient.
".JPG" (and ".JPEG", if applied) files then will never be shown with the picture viewer (if you don't use the "open with").

EDIT: With most older windows versions, @jatrax suggestions would only work in one direction. With it was possible to link to MS applications included in the OS, but not to 3rd party programs.

Best remote for a K-x?

The better ones of these also offer sophisticated multi-exposure, delay, and time lap functions.

I don't know whether the K-x has a remote socket; if so, it will be mechanically and electrically compatible with the Canon remote socket. So you could also use a wired Canon remote, at least for single shots.

Since years, I always use Pantona for the K-5 and my Lumix cameras.
I found that they are slightly worse in all properties, compared with the original ones.
But it's still saving a lot of money, as they cost a fraction of the Pentax/Panasonic branded batteries.

I heard good and bad things about Ansmann batteries (their chargers are very good, but not the cheap models which are just Ansmann labeled Chinese ones).

Despite both Pantona and Ansmann being German companies, their batteries are of course also produced in China.

Weather resistance of wr ff/fa lenses on the k-1

30 years ago, I owned a rather expensive Swiss wrist watch, "waterproof". A specialized shop told me, that wp could not be guaranteed any more if they (or I) would change the battery. To keep wp for sure, with every opening of the case all sealings would have to replaced by ORIGINAL ONES (no 3rd party, no 10 year old stock). If I wanted to be sure to keep wp, battery change would have to be done by the factory. Which I did; it was not so expensive and wp guarantee was prolonged, but it took 3 weeks.
I think opening a DSLR case will also afford to replace entangled seals.

"Water (weather) resistant" cameras are not designed the same as "waterproof" equipment (where outside pressure automatically tightens the pressure on the seals, instead of deminishing it).

Seals are degrading over time.
I wonder whether it was tested how many lens changes are possible till the camera side seals of the lens will start to fail. Certainly not infinite. I also suspect that any scratches (or robust dirt, even if tiny) on the camera mount may shorten the life of the lens seals, if not even decrease the wr properties directly.

If everything else fails, print the PDF in booklet format, and make it a book.
I had to do it for many old devices, where no original copies were available anymore.

And the mostly crappy carelessly produced scans often offered for premium prices just won't do for me.

About the CZJ Pancolar MC 1.8/50 electric:

A couple of years ago I won an eBay auction for a Praktica VLC3 with that lens attached.
I had bought it mainly for the body, as I knew many East German professionals had used the camera (TTL open aperture measurement and exchangable viewfinders).
The lens seemed to be a welcome extra, as many members of German photographic forums found it to be an extremly good lens.
Both lens and body did rarely show any signs of usage, but the shutter was stucked!

So, before sending it back, I made a very quick comparing test with my 10MP K200D (resolution only, distance about 30m, all apertures) against my Helios 44-K4 and the Pentax A 1.4/50, and was not impressed. Maybe the Pancolar was a lemon, but from F 2 up to 5.6 both the Helios and the Pentax definitely were sharper.

Returning it still was a mistake. As I had initially been interested in the Praktica only, I had not investigated about the average prices of a Pancolar. I only later realized I had got the combo for half the price of what just the Pancolar would have cost on eBay!

Are you sure the lens release button is working as it should?
If your lens is not WR, you may be able to see whether the bolt is retracting far enough to set the lens free to rotate the bayonet.
