Domain Name - To Acquire or No?

So, I am currently the owner of www.alexjansenphotography.com and I have wanted for some time now to acquire www.alexjansen.com for a few reasons.

1) It's short and concise and thus WAY simpler, making it easier to remember as well as spell correctly
2) It has the added prestige of "I own my digital real estate" when presenting it to clients
3) Along with both 1 and 2, alex@alexjansen.com is a phenomenal email address if you ask me lol

BUT, It's considered "premium" (a status given to domains when they are previously owned and then traded/sold), so while it currently listed for sale (sometimes they just aren't available....PERIOD), it's $1800. For those unaware, it's relatively cheap when "JohnSmith.com" could be a $100,000 domain.

I offered $1000 and it was accepted, and even if I went lower to say $500, over 30 years, that amounts to a difference of $16 a year, which is nothing.

So my question is: do you think it's worthwhile to pursue it even if I am not a full-time photographer? You can see from my website that I'm a very competent photographer (for those that don't know me here lol), however I am actually an active duty officer in the Army with 7 years in service and all intentions to complete the 20 year career.

In about 2-3 years I do intend to get an MBA in Marketing (paid for as part of my army contract).

I have the money already in my PayPal account (sold a bunch of camera gear recently), so it wouldn't even be noticed on my checking/credit card, but it's still not chump change...

So yea..........thoughts?

K-1 and DA* 55 have been sold :)

And yea, the focusing screen makes a tremendous difference. And I agree - that focusing screen for the K-1 would make it much better a camera, especially for manual focusing.

Thanks!

The lens of this genre that interests me the most is the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 VC G2.

That lens is one of the single best 70-200's ever made. And it may take that #1 spot when you factor in its price.

And again, not in K mount...

Plaza de Toros in Barcelona, Spain. Now a defunct stadium due to the outlawing of bullfighting in the province of Catalonia, we had it all to ourselves that day when I was traveling with my sisters. It wasn't until after I took the shot did I realize what my 11-year old sister was doing - pretending she was a bull and charging on the sands.

K1 Travel Telephoto Options?
Posted By Heie

I haven't traveled with the K-1 yet, however when I used the K-3, the DFA 100 was my telephoto because it is so sharp that I felt comfortable cropping down even further if needed. My 3-lens kit was usually:
  • K-3

  • DA 10-17 FE

  • DA* 16-50 / DA 16-85 WR (I later replaced the 16-50 with the 16-85)

  • DFA 100mm WR

If you are looking to use FF mode and are ok with something a little bigger, you have two main options - the DA* 200 or the Rokinon 135 f/2. Both great pieces of glass, albeit the 135 has reached a reputation of legendary. Its only "shortcoming" being its lack of autofocus (MF only).

With a deployment looming (again), I'm streamlining my kit a bit, and part of that is my flash equipment. I've used the Yongnuo system before and quite frankly, it is subpar to the Cactus system. Not only are the Cactus flashes better built, but the user-interface is more intuitive in my opinion. Additionally, the Cactus has two huge advantages.

First, the top of the wireless master controller (that mounts to the hotshoe and allows you to change the power of each flash) has another hotshoe that allows for a flash to be mounted on top anyway. So if you need wireless OCF flash and THEN a flash on top, you have that option. With Yongnuo, you don't.

Also, my favorite feature is that THE FLASHES HAVE TRIPOD MOUNTS BUILT RIGHT INTO THEM!!!!!!!!!!! You can literally mount them anywhere and to anything!

2x RF 60 flashes and 1x V6 transceiver for $285 shipped to anywhere in the US.

OCONUS is an option as well - just let me know via PM and we'll work it out. They are 100% brand new (as I have another set that I use). All boxes, cases, stands, papers, etc. are of course included and in excellent condition.

And as I am the owner of a K-3 and also K-1, I can guarantee that they will be 100% compatible with your camera, or pretty much any other camera as that's another strength of the Cactus system

Every image in this gallery has been made using those flashes: Alex Jansen Photography | Portraiture

Also, for OCF tutorials, I've got a few on my blog that may be on interest to you: www.alexjansenphotography.com/blog

-Alex

P.S....unrelated, but soon there will be a front page article (front page of the PF) detailing how the cover photo for the UWA comparison review was made, which involved the same kit. Stay tuned for that... :)

Opening a Wedding/Events Venue - Need Help...

Thanks all for chiming in! :D

Really? Not sure what part of the U.S. you're from but it's extremely popular. Just good a google search for "barn weddings" and you'll get flooded with results. Especially here in the south, it's not a tiny niche...

So I guess I should have been more clear about at least that lol. But yes, it will be a massive barn that's approximately 8000 sq ft (total footprint). Here's a look at the blueprints (which yours truly drafted up using Photoshop lol):

As you can tell, it will be constructed from scratch. Additionally, this obviously isnt the interiour of our facility, however this is what we're going for. This is the interior of the Sycamore Barn - a $10,000-15,000 venue in Tennessee. No, our property will not be able to compete with those grounds lol (if you click on the link to see it).

Obviously there will be some differences between ours, however that's a good idea of the collors and exposed wood we are looking for. We won't have the mezzanine either (although we've already discussed where to put one should we decide to add it several years down the road).

Lisa, when you eventually read this, know that this wasn't my idea :D :D :D

She's of the same mentality. Does your perception change now I've added some information above (blueprints and a sample from a similar facility).

Three words is what I'd like to keep it to. I'm a very big proponent of simplicity. And "Functions" is even more generic and with none of the "pinache" lol

Ha! No, haunted weddings will not be our specialty ;) Locally, and semi non-locally (extending beyond the region), "Cape Fear" is a family name that everyone is aware of and doesn't bat an eye towards. It's also the name of the most significant river in the area (Cape Fear River) that covers over two hundred miles until it ends in the Atlantic Ocean. And I'm with you as to the connotation of each word (Manor being a British estate, etc.).

Again, too many words.

Thanks again everyone, and hopefully I've done a better job of providing ample information. Your input is sincerely appreciated!

Opening a Wedding/Events Venue - Need Help...

So, going to play "Active Duty Entrepreneur" and launch a venue with a business partner. She is an exceptionally talented and well-established local photographer that I have worked with and known for the past two years.

We are struggling to concoct the perfect name, and I figured I would turn here for some assistance. It is to be located somewhere in the Cape Fear Region, North Carolina.

Originally, I thought Cape Fear Barn would be a solid name that was settled, but my partner is having second thoughts. This is why I liked it:
  1. It's decisive - 3 words, one syllable each.

  2. Easy to remember, never mis-spellable.

  3. Building off #2, 12 total letters, making it an optimal domain name (and www.capefearbarn.com is available).

  4. Capitalizes on entire region for marketing with instant name recognition. Same town has "Cape Fear Hospital" and "Cape Fear Botanical Gardens"

  5. SEO is built in, especially if anyone searches "cape fear barn wedding" or "cape fear barn venue"

  6. it's simplicity is part of its strength. "Get married at the Barn!" Because there's only barn that matters in the entire Cape Fear region - The Cape Fear Barn.

  7. "Barn" is used in many famous and highly regarded venues across the U.S. and even in other English speaking countries.

I'm not married to the name, however we're struggling to come up with something that captures the rustic feel of a barn but also its modern elegance and (eventual) prestige. Additionally, we want the venue space to be enticing not just to couples looking for the perfect venue, but also the local military community for formal galas and the like (as we'll be a veteran-owned business) as well as other corporate (non-military) functions.

The property is covered in holly and pine trees (some hardwood, but not much), so we've been playing word-tetris with all combinations of "Holly" "Woods" "Wilds" "Manor" "Reserve" "Ranch" "Landing" etc.

Thoughts?

Also, if you've ever done anything like this and would like to chime in regarding lessons learned from the experience, that'd be great! But please don't comment on the viability of the project because we've done the research and the business plan is solid and we're moving forward. I'd share the actual plan, however it's still in draft form and we haven't presented it to the bank yet. Nonetheless, we're extremely confident, to include the numbers and purposeful growth potential within the first three years as this will be a unique offering for the area.

Thanks for the help! And of course I'll provide more info as to the progress of the project and its details when able.

That's pretty close to how I run my wedding business (when I can because I'm deployed so often). But yea, I always show up 2-3 hours prior to the requires show time to photograph the facility as you're right - it's always important to do that right (otherwise why use that venue for the wedding).

Glad to hear she was able to put that part of the process behind her :)

That's the beauty of Pentax's native .DNG ability. You don't have to wait for LR to keep up.

.DNG is Adobe's native raw format, so it's compatible in perpetuity ;)

The same can't be said for lens profiles, but cameras and simply reading RAW files, to include full EXIF data displaying in LR? Never an issue. Same can't be said for any other camera maker, though...

What is your sharpest Lens on K-1?
Posted By Heie
Replies: 67

In all reality, none of those lenses are "lower end."

The 77 - not even going to dignify that with an explanation of not being low end.

The 28-105 - is it the DFA WR version? If yes, it's size and aperture could be consdered "low end" but it's fantastically sharp and an all around excellent optic. In good light I'd recommend it over the DFA 24-70 f/2.8 any day.

The 50 and 35 are based off FF versions that perform extremely well. The 50 is often considered one of the sharpest lenses in K mount, especially if you value DXO ratings. Sure both these lenses are not exactly Limited's in their quality of construction, but low end would not be for the optics.

You don't have a low end lens in your kit.

I personally have fallen in LOVE with the DA* 55 on my K-1. The DA* 60-250 in FF mode is also very promising (I still need to shave the baffle though).
