Both superb!

Awesome, Matt

Another awesome set, we are used to beautiful macros nailing DOF, and amazing colours from you Frederic.... but with your last few sets have excelled yourself again!

I'm back in Scotland with the K-1 and D-FA 24-70mm... rather changeable weather, but as usual that's part of the fun :D

Cheers, agreed and no prob. I definitely regard comments for all as Ďthe gold standardí - it adds to the fun for everyone if done right :)

Of course itís loads easier if you only get a few entries! :D

Tas - I not only kept running notes, but I also downloaded every item during the week for offline comparison on a calibrated screen. A busy week for me for other (offline) reasons but I gave this some priority. Someone else might not have had the amount of time that I saved for this and might approach it differently - but thatís ok with me.

I think we should not put members off entering and hosting by setting too rigid a rule about how much feedback should be given in the final post. As I said before - anything more than naming the winner is a bonus as far as I am concerned.

That said Iím very happy to go with a consensus view on whatís required on future contests, and looking forward to the next one.

Last time I hosted (way back in the 150ís I think) there used to be a separate thread for the winners announcement and the inevitable discussion! Now those were the days :)

Plain and simple, I picked on a few to comment on, not all. I was careful to thank everyone for submitting their photos - I not only enjoyed seeing every picture, I also considered every entry carefully in the judging.

Hosting and judging the contest takes time and even the judging and closing post takes a couple of hours to do and compose - I simply didnít have time to do comments for everyone owing to unavoidable travel commitments and didnít want to delay the results.

Apologies to anyone who didnít get a personal comment, but I trust youíll understand!

By the way- I think just announcing the winner is fine if thatís all the judge wants to do as well. Anything more is beyond the call of duty!

A really tough decision here. I think there are hundreds of ways to approach this image, which isn't the easiest to deal with. A busy interior and different lighting temperatures create a perfect storm when trying to process the image (as I have found).

It is very tough to pick a winner! A few comments on some of the entries that I especially liked:

BigMackCam - Love the restrained palette here, one of my favourite treatments, even the TV shape worked OK here, given the echo of the mouldings.
Glenn5995 - Love the concentration on the marble and the toning here
JHfwp - a very natural looking process, well done.
LarsW - beautifully balanced and structured monochrome
johnkrumm - love the colours even if the crop felt a little wrong to me.
D1N0 - Maybe the nicest treatment of the colours, the mirror effect is done perfectly too. Well done.
astonm - nice work, love the removal of the barriers and the fire
dlneubec - exactly how I felt after editing my version!
jcomley - Very classic HDR looking
Tas - nice vintage process!

Overall, picking the final ranking from the line up is tough - but I will name:

Joint Third- D1N0 / BigMacCam
Runner Up - JHfwp
Winner- LarsW with his crisp monochrome rendition

So..... LarsW has the honour of hosting PP Challenge #256. Well done!

As is traditional, Here are my own versions. Not sure I nailed it myself, but I know from my own tries it is a time consuming and difficult image to work on - so well done to all the entrants, and roll on PP Challenge #256!

Thank you!

And thank you to Glenn for hosting with a fabulous image that really made me feel like I was there.

I usually concentrate on landscape, and while I have plenty of photos of waterfalls, I thought we might like a change, so I have set up Post Processing PP Challenge #255 to focus on an interesting interior of a English country house.

So join me in the drawing room of Cragside in Northumberland at this link.

I hope you enjoy - I am looking forward to seeing some diverse entries!

John

Thank you Glenn5995 for hosting the last challenge, I really enjoyed working on the image and seeing how others approached it.

We have just had a fantastic landscape shot of a waterfall, so although I have plenty of landscape images to share (including a lot of waterfalls!), I thought it might be interesting to have a change of gear.

So I hit upon this image of a completely unrestrained Victorian gentleman's drawing room at Cragside in Rothbury, Northumberland UK. I hope this image will interest you all to participate!

I've included three brackets, which were taken handheld in relatively low light, so there are some imperfections as well as some options to for you to optimise your take on the image. I think there are many ways to approach this one (and didn't do my own version yet!). So I am dying to see what people come up with.

Please feel free to use any number of the images for the contest, and to come up with your own visions here, I don't think there is a 'right' way to do this one.

I will close the contest at 7am UK time Monday 16 July to give people a fair crack of the whip! I hope you enjoy.

Thanks for sharing.

A re-process from me. Actually taken 5 years ago today, on the K-5.

Missing my 8-16 today! I don't have the lens any more but I do miss it's portability, and its width sometimes when I pick up my K-1 with 15-30!

Glen Orchy in the Scottish Highlands.

Very nice! That 24-70 sure is sweet..... I will try to prove it again - and show it does OK when it is rainy and dark too! Two from Ardvreck Castle, Loch Assynt in the Scottish Highlands.

Very kind! No, although I had the tripod with me for the falls, this one is a totally handheld effort. It's a 3 shot pano, but by the look of the original frames I actually moved after the second shot. Did my best to fix it :/ This is what happens when your travelling pal is getting bored and you are rushing!

I appreciate the comment very much!
