What is your "Lens of the Year 2018"

My lens of the year is the DA* 60-250 f/4. Over the past few years I have been shooting exclusively with primes HD DA Limited's and the D FA 100 Macro WR. It was a tough decision to choose between the DA* 200 and DA* 60-250. The versatility of the 60-250 has been extremely helpful. This zoom is without question a stack of primes!!! An absolute joy to shoot with once you master the modest AF speed.

Band Arch Enemy Is slammed for dissing photog.

A complicated situation that didn’t need to be so. The merchandise company and band management handled the issue poorly and disrespectfully toward an artist whose medium is photography. The authors proposal of a modest charitable donation to resolve the issue was reasonable. Like BigMackCam; I too have mixed feelings regarding the Author/Photographer’s approach in continuing to pursue the issue. On one hand I applaud bringing the issue to light and informing photographers of an issue they may face and that they do have recourse. On the other hand “trial by social media” only creates more conflict with the seeming intent to create more damage to parties involved. When reading the article words of Native Canadian (First Nations) advice my Grandfather gave me as a child came to mind; “those who throw mud only lose ground”. I also agree this issue should have been pursued, mediated and resolved in private by all parties, legally or otherwise - preserving integrety and respect between all parties.

Pentax k3ii in Canada

Sadly Pentax’s lack of marketing has caused most local stores to abandon the brand. When Henry’s stopped carrying any Pentax locally, I started shopping at Newfoundland Camera. On Friday I dropped in to Newfoundland Camera - not a single Pentax in the store. I asked why. Here’s the answer “Pentax is doing nothing to drive sales. No marketing. Nothing. We have to dedicate our limited showcase space to brands that consumers are seeking. Advertising drives that. We can still order in Pentax for you but we can’t carry it.”

I did find that Aden Camera in Toronto has the K-3II.

Another option is the Vanguard VEO 2 AM-264TR. Vanguard VEO 2 AM-264TR Aluminum Monopod VEO 2 AM-264TR B&H

I have the original 264TR and have been using it for years. Outstanding piece of kit.

I shoot sports with the DA* 60-250 and a Vanguard VEO AM-264-TR monopod and travel with HD DA Limiteds and a Veo AM-324 monopod. SR is always utilized. A monopod adds some stability but not complete stability.

"The 200mm... the seemly unloved these days focal length club"

I was torn between th DA* 200 and DA* 60-250 this past Spring - ultimately choosing the zoom for flexibility as every other lens in my bag is a prime. After several months of use, and loving the image quality of the 60-250; I have found that 90%+ of my photos have been shot around 200 mm. I do wish that I had the extra stop of light from time to time.

I plan on upgrading my K-5II in the new year or Spring with a KP or hopefully K-3II replacement. If the improved sensor eliminates the need for an additional stop of light then I’m set. If not there will be a 200 prime in my bag shortly after. On crop sensors the 200 is a sweet focal length for shooting sports.

How to Carry It?

To travel light and stay warm, I highly recommend swapping out the 9mm for a .380 Walter PPK - it’s the pistol version of a Pentax KP with HD DA 40 Ltd. Swap the rye for a flask of Laphroaig and everything will fall into place.

The Godox looks sweet. I’m into the Cactus system with 4 x RF60’s and two V6 transceivers. Have been waiting for the RQ250 but Cactus has been slow releasing it....

I typically use a monopod with the DA* 60-250. The Vanguard VEO AM-264-TR fits nicely in the Think Tank Perception Pro with the folding feet upwards. I'd take stable ground over anything self-supported.

For me it’s the DA* 300. I got the 60-250 and the HD DA 1.4 x TC. I will probably pick up a DA* 200 as well for the extra speed and lighter weight.

For me the grip should be an add-on. The adaptability of the Pentax system is the reason I shoot it. When Travelling I carry a K-5II and take 3 HD DA Limited’s, all within a small Domke F-5xb shoulder bag. When shooting sports with the DA* 60-250 my kit is carried in a backpack and the grip is attached to the camera for balance as well as the second set of controls. The ability to increase or reduce the size of my camera body based on the shooting requirements for the day is important to me. Lately I have been looking at the K-1. The body isn’t much larger than the K-5II. The K1 and FA Limited’s would make a nice compact kit for travel or street photography while a grip would be handy for the massive FF zooms.
