An Enthusiast Mirrorless

Again...here in Pentax land...less folks really care about video, and for now, Pentax Ricoh agrees. Mirror less cameras took off because the video capability. Unless Pentax embraces video, there is little reason to introduce mirrorless cameras into the Pentax line. I totally agree with this too. My K1 is my perfect photography camera, and for video, a ton of Sony cameras do the trick for me. If the replacement K3 comes, and it has good video, then, maybe, Pentax Ricoh will give us a mirrorless camera.

Yeah...so many people imitate/emulate Casey N. and put that kind of music into their videos. On the other end of the spectrum is Philip Bloom. I try and stay away from either's "style" and try and do my own thing.

Pentax Mirrorless should use a shortened 645 mount

There are some really good m4/3 cameras out there, but I would definitely go for one of the mirrorless APS-C ones coming out. Heck, even the m4/3 can take Pentax glass with an adapter.

I have way too much Sony to have yet another mount in my workflow!

Technically, APS-C is very close to Super 35 which is about the same size of sensor in my Sony FS7 and FS5. I love putting my Pentax APS-C glass on those cameras.

If Pentax would just give me a decent APS-C camera with at least 1080p/60 at 50mbit or 4K/60 at 100mbit, Pentax would be instantly in my workflow again.

I dearly miss shooting with my K1 or K3 professionally.

Why?

Because now, when you fly, there can't be any batteries in the checked luggage. So with carry-on having to have laptop, lenses, some bodies and batteries, I can't take too much gear with me on assignments/gigs.

Sadly Pentax stays home these days.

But...I have beat this drum way too many times.

If Pentax does not embrace video, there is no reason to go mirrorless. I've been using the Sony system for a couple of years, and if I am doing "just photography" a dSLR is much better for my workflow. The big question will be if the new APS-C camera coming/rumored will do decent video, and from that, we might see mirrorless really take hold with Pentax.

Mirrorless give the potential for global shutter, great digital zoom for 4K workflows, boosted gamma and output to external monitors since there is no mirror that has to be up, electronic ND, etc. etc.. All things that make video work in these new cameras from Canon and Nikon et al, are because of VIDEO, not photography.

And that is the elephant in the room when it comes to Pentax and mirrorless.

National Parks are definitely no-go zones. Too many people in the early days flew their drones into things like hot springs and harassed the wildlife for that to stop almost immediately. To be honest, National Parks - at least the big ones - usually have too many people around and have been photographed to death. Even regular photography in them in restricted.

Knowing the rules allows me to fly places that others would not be able to. There are many places that tend to be grey, and I make sure that I don't cause a scene or become a dronetard if there is a question.

I respect people's privacy, I fly when no one else is around, I do my homework. I get in and get out quickly before most people even know I was there - even when I am 100 legit. I follow the rules and when people realize I am using a drone for artistic methods and not using a drone to fly and be a nuisance, that also helps.

Flipping out my Vimeo account to show what I do also helps.

I could go on and on about what its like to be out in the world with a drone.
Some people love them, some people HATE HATE HATE them.

(Like irrationally HATE)

Yeah, wildlife preserves...national parks...protected seashores...not drone friendly, and for good reason. In California there are places on the coast where you can't fly, and there are places you can. Even the places you can, you can't come close to wild life.

I shot a video a few years back where I digitally zoomed in on an Otter that was playing in the surf. The otter may have seemed like I was close, but I wasn't. Thank goodness for 4K shooting, and delivering in 1080p! ;)

I have one of the few authorizations from the FAA to fly our corporate campus, which is in a flight path, permission from our building facilities and all the permissions, so I know what it's like to fly in restricted airspace.

But...its awesome to be able to fly where no one else is allowed...not that its selfish, but satisfying to jump through all the hoops to do it.

Here are two where I had that authorization. Some of my footage has been on CNN and Reuters, so its all worth it.

and

These two are the "Director's cut" of footage that my company used in other media. Its nice I get to keep my versions!

Enjoy.

Good for them to be so concerned...but no-fly zones...they don't just "pop up" unless there is an emergency. Surely they should know beforehand. ;)

Sounds like they are responsible drone operators. Awesome!

I fly either a DJI Phantom 3 or a Mavic Air. The photo of your daughter's drone looks like a Phantom 3 advanced with some aftermarket landing gear. ;)

Many people operate their drone from a controller, and their phone is only used for display of the live video. Very few phones actually control the drone, since most phones are WiFi. That being said there ARE drones that can be controlled by a phone and they can be very unpredictable in terms of the reliability using Wifi.

I think the early DJI drones could be controlled by a phone, but fly-aways are more likely with Wifi control. so not many people use phones to control the drone.

There are two types of drone operations (technically more) that are either for hobby or commercial. The rules for each are a bit different depending on the drone and what you are flying for. When I am flying about, just doing my thing, I am flying as a hobbyist. When I am flying commercially, I fall under the my professional license that I had to take a test for, from the FAA, and I am a certified drone pilot.

Depending on the airspace B,C,D,E and G has restrictions on what you can and can't do. With LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) which has not been rolled out 100% nationally, you can fly in certain spaces without having to go through the lengthy authorization or waiver process.

The rules of flying a drone are very convoluted, and since I fly all over the world, varies quite a bit.

As for "certified to fly almost anywhere" that depends. Often I am legally allowed to fly places or there are "warnings", but irate people don't really care about legal issues. Kinda like street photography.

Airmap is a great way to see what is happening and the airspace you are flying in or will fly in.

The folks that manage it, I gave them the video for their promotion purposes. They were very happy! Look up "Friends of Cambusnethan House"

I am a certified FAA drone pilot...and I do quite a bit of flying for my job. I actually HATE flying the drone per se...but I love what I can get as far as imagery. Photography is the first step, then Cinematography, then taking your camera to places and move it to capture images you only dreamed about. The learning curve is SEVERE.

Thanks Adam!

Yep. Drones are either love or hate depending on where you go. I make sure that I am not a dronetard, and the lessons I learned as a photographer come in handy when dealing with "drone hate". As an FAA pilot, I know my rights, but I also know a scene is not going to get me anywhere. I try and fly either with permission (even when I don't need it), early in the morning, when people are not around..etc. etc.

I'd LOVE to see some more Pentaxians with some drone footage!

Well, I suppose this is the section to post some stuff using my drone(s). I'm still a Pentaxian, but since I haven't shot much video on my Pentaxes in a long time, I've got to show "something" as a contribution...and stay connected to this site.

So here you go. Something I shot in Scotland, on the Isle of Arran.

Water 'Sand Bags' Holders?

Weights. The thing about weights, is they are weight. They suck getting them to locations. I've fantasized about finding something that works without flying around the world without them ready to go. The closest I ever came, was to get weights at used sporting good stores when I got to my location. Alas, finding weights or using improvised ones, just took too much time. Even if you film around water...you are going to have to play in the water/river to use the bladders to fill, and then put in the bags...wetness all around camera gear. Weights suck, but the only solution I have found was to get smaller lights, and smaller weights.

I fly with 3-4 of the 5lbs weights, already filled and ready to go.
Here they are - Impact Filled Saddle Sandbag (5 lb, Black) SBF-B-5 B&H Photo

There is a correlation to creativity of the shoot, and taking too much time getting ready *for* the shoot.

Welcome to Marwen

Its looking like the upcoming "Welcome to Marwen" is going to be the "Pentax" movie we have waited our lives for.
Just in the trailer for the movie, Pentax was shown no less than three times.
The camera is essentially a character in the story.

So my guess is someone at Ricoh paid big bucks for the product placement, or we have someone that has a real connection to Pentax who is in charge of the visual design.

Maybe even the choice of "Pentax" - being an outside non mainstream brand in 2018 - fits the character who is trying to escape the world?

Either way, the movie is the Pentax focus we have all been waiting for.

For those that have not seen the trailer in the movies - here it is.

Originally I hated the concept of the Q, but I came to appreciate it. I was waiting for sensor and image quality to improve to really get into them. Sad its not ever going to happen. Glad I bought the original (I have a white one still in the box) and have two others.

Yep...and THIS is why the K3 replacement is taking so long. Ricoh doesn't make camera internals like that anymore...no one does. Our Pentax cameras have been way too "analog" and it's probably giving Ricoh fits to engineer current standard components.

I've been to that store...and it's not exactly central to anything.

Either its a local job, the thieves are up in Inverness, or someone made a serious trek up there to steal.

Honestly...you have to want to go there.

Great place, just not very accessible.

Add in Leica stuff? My guess it will not be too hard to find the people.

It seems that the trend is moving away from having GPS modules in the camera, and putting that functionality as part of everyone's ubiquitous mobile/cell phone. Using BluTooth allows for a relatively easy way to interface external GPS and do additional functions.

It would also not surprise me if audio monitoring or recording was done via Bluetooth. Since to my knowledge that functionality does not exist in any other camera manufacturer natively, it might be a way for Pentax/Ricoh to differentiate the camera from the others.

The Sony MI shoe, is an excellent example of an interface that can be used for flash, and other "smart" devices.

Since GPS modules are usually put under the Hot Shoe, and require a plastic/composite cover, that would lend more credence to the GPS going BlueTooth and making room for something different under the hot shoe.

I think they are doing a scramble. Video was something they thought they could "ignore", but what comes with video is advancements that keep them competitive. Video requires EVF or at least LiveView and related data transfers and storage. There are so many technologies that have been ignored that it might be something incredibly difficult for the home office to assign internally. So, what I would do is take as much off-the-shelf hardware I have, re-use the K3 forms, build a new internal board, cram more into the same package, and give us a K3 III that is a Pentax video powerhouse. To me, that is the ONLY option they have to do in the next 6 months.

Pentax/Ricoh has been boxed into a corner by what has been announced in the last few weeks. From new MILC to Lens alliances...Pentax/Ricoh has to do SOMETHING...and do it fast.

Pentax K-1 for video compared to other options?

Thanks for thinking/mentioning me.

The K5/K3/K1 are decent tools when you need a "field camera" that can also shoot videos. They all have great battery life, use great Pentax glass, have reasonable mic inputs and other bits to make video a respectable option in a Pentax body.

Any camera can get the job done, and Pentax can, and does fit into my workflow...however....my workflow has become less forgiving of the shortcomings of Pentax cameras in regards to video. I harbor ZERO resentment, and when the shortcomings are rectified, Pentax cameras will no doubt become part of my video workflow again.

If you are just starting into video...a K5/K3/K1 is an excellent tool.

So what are those shortcomings? In 2018, I like to shoot at 60p. Either at 2K or 1080p as a minumum. I need at least 50mbps, but ideally want 100. I can get away with 8bit, but need 10 for grading (although I make custom LUTs).

I love how Pentax lenses have NOT gone "fly-by-wire", and a DA lens with a Novoflex adapter is the perfect cinema lens. Pentax with their APS-C line is pretty much Super 35mm and so DA lenses are wonderful to adapt to many cameras that make use of the Super 35mm sensors.

The image quality does not suck from a Pentax camera, and if I wasn't swimming in Sony, then I might continue to squeeze out what I could with my Pentax bodies.

I am REALLY hoping that the K3 replacement fixes some of the video shortcomings.

2) If no video improvements in camera, can they at least give clean/sensor readout optimized for an Odyssey or Atomos?

Point them to any of my professional workflows using Pentax cameras/lenses - https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/members/20446-laurenoe/albums/10635-lauren-s-pentax-work/

Point them to any of my threads where I show Pentax glass on other maker's cameras.
