Where these shot in a studio? (looking at the curvature of the wall)

If so why the need for high speed sync?

If your shooting outside, yea as you get to control the ambient but in the studio just dim the lights and let the flash duration do the thing unless your strobes have a long flash duration that is.

This is my best pentax shot of 2014, not just because I like the image but because its the day I got to meet and make a great new friend and fellow pentaxian known in the forum as Heie.

I used his k3 for this shot, laying in the ground as he fell over a few times trying to fit onto the little bike, light with two lights a 200w/s stobe on the front right and a speed light on the back left, after the shoot we went in and had Dinner.

I hope that some day I will get to spend more time with Alex and feel honored that he took some time out of his trip to scotland to spend time with my and my family, its always nice to meet fellow pentaxians. :D

That's some good points and I'm sure if I had a k-01 I also would keep it as I rather like its design and just like any modern camera is capable of creating nice images but comparing it to other mirror less offerings at the time (spec wise) and its official launch price it should have been better or sold for less imho as on paper it was similar to lower end nex camera's except ofc for image stabilization (which they have in some lens) which were much less in price.

Exactly and it was launched for a similar price too, the fact that the stripped out the mirrorbox, OVF and put less control's on the k-01 meens the k-01 would have cost much less to manufacture and should have sold for much less, you were really getting much more for your money with the k30.

So I still stand by my reasons for calling the k-01 a crap camera, taking into account its price/functions/launch time and the k30 coming out a few months after with much more features for similar money but that dosn't mean its a crap or bad camera to use as there is more to a camera than a spec sheet.

Not sure what there is to tell really, I uploaded it to facebook to find the next day a msg from a friend on G+ showing me a link to reddit where it was trending with lots of comments and stuff... it was hosted on imgur and had over 750k views. I tried looking back at Reddit but it has been arcived and most of the comments and stuff are now gone.

I also found it on other places like a russian forum which people had been photoshoping it, adding things like cheif hats and hot sause, or shoving us all into a baseball park, my daughter was also stolen from the photo and put into other images of her smashing zombies heads open and stuff.

Very true.. and shows what pentax can do when someone else isn't meddling with their camera lol, tbh the k-01 is a pretty special little thing that will be remembered mostly because of its looks I just think its a shame they went out there way to get someone to design the camera for them and not go the extra mile to make it a little more special tech wise.

The k30 didn't help it much either being released not long after and basically giving you a k-01 when in liveview but the k30 in itself was pretty amazing as it gave people dual control wheels and 100% ovf pentaprizim at a price the other company's were giving you one control wheel and pentamirrors although it will be forgotten while the k-01 will not.

Your picking me up all wrong.

The price and spec on the time of the k-01's release it was a pretty "crap" camera compared to what else was in the market and they even brought out the k30 around 3-4 months after which could do everything the k-01 could just as well or better but having an ovf, weather sealing and dual control wheels so I stand by my statement that the k-01 was a pretty crap camera.

That doesn't make it a bad camera to have or to use, the sigma dp merrills are (compated to lots of other cameras) pretty crap, slow operations speed, slow af, slow buffer times, bad high iso but they are the best camera's I own currently (unless Im going to shoot an event in which case my k5 and da* lens come out).

I just feel it was a missed opportunity from pentax, I'd have loved for it to have done well and for there to be new versions of it and the xs lens , Id even welcome a pro version much like a k3 but with evf (as it can be much larger and have focus aids) and built in nd filters and such instead of a mirror.

And that's why I love the DP Merrills I have, they can do more than 1fps, but the write times (10sec plus), file size (40-50meg) and 30+ shots per battery force you to slow down and thing and its a great way to shoot.

I know the sensor in the gf1 is old but its still good in its limitations and pretty sharp too.. but meaning for the k-01 being a bad camera is that spec wise it was out done (as was the sigmas) by almost any other mirrorless on the market at the time and my several year old gf1 bettered it in some ways too like faster fps, smaller, better af (with neat tricks like starting to AF as you level the camera) ofc being an old 12mp m4/3 sensor the IQ isn't up there but I was simply pointing out that the k-01 on release was pretty dated already and pretty crap spec wise next to other mirrorless offerings that could be had for much less.

My gf1 cost me 650 with a pretty awesome 20mm f1.7 and was a first for that type of camera for panasonic, yet the k-01 three years later cost's around the same with a much lesser spec (except sensor) which was a little disappointing imho.

But just because spec wise it was a bad camera, doesn't mean its not a great camera to use and it is capable of amazing images as the sony 16mp sensor is great I just feel for the release price they were asking way to much for what it was, if it was priced much lower it would have been a hit and we might even have seen a k-02 and more xs lens.

I personally feel a proper mirrorless pentax with the k mount would be great, they could use the empty space to place lens elements inside (xs lens) and even have things like ND filters and such to enable.
Make one using the k3 tech, add a nice EVF and flip out screen.. great control and built in wifi and I would happily get one or better yet shove a FF sensor in one as you said before as there is no need to update the mirrorbox or pentaprizim then.

At the release price and its specs it was WAY behind even my several year younger gf1 (that cost me 650 with a 20mm f1.7 and was one of the first of its kind), never mind the more modern mirror-less camera's released at the same time... 1fps in raw?

Sure when the price plummeted it was a decent camera for the money, it was/is able to take very nice images due to the 16mp sony sensor but imho it was crippled far more than it had to be and was also the first pentax apcs camera to use the really crap movie:sr which I really hope they do away with (or allow the user to select what type of sr to use) as the mechanical sr was much better.

But just because a camera is pretty crap, it dosn't mean its a bad camera as I stated with my merrill's, they are probably the worse cameras I have used (spec, speed wise) but also the best camera's I have used too.

Sounds like a good idea Ron.

But I do agree that as a camera the K-01 was a pile of crap (as a camera), that's not to say crap cameras are bad as I totally love my sigma dp merrills and they are even slower with much less battery (but make up for it in IQ, leaf shutter and great built in lens).

Keeping the flange distance is a good thing, they can build into the mount (xs lens) to make smaller/faster wide angles (the bonus of mirrorless with shorter flange distances) and even use the space where the mirror used to be for things like ND and removable IR filters (like the sigma dslrs.

Bringing a FF version of the k-01 would be good as it would mean they don't have to make a new mirrorbox so it keeps cost's down but I would like to see a built in EVF and for them to remove MOVIE:SR and go back to mechanical.

The a7 looks like a fine camera to hook our pentax glass into, an apcs crop of this image just wouldn't be the same :)

That was't my image in round one :), mine was the girl drinking tea in my nieces bedroom which sort of had a kinda Alice in wonder land type look to it due to the small size of the kids furniture :)

But the sweeping the dirt under the wall photo was pretty great :)

---------- Post added 07-13-2014 at 11:08 PM ----------

ahh right nvm, I read you wrong hahaha...

I was meant to take take it easy after my op (and getting took back into hospital after bleeding again) but I've been out shooting today for my friend, it was a christning I told him I would do a ages ago and didn't really want to let him down so I did what I could considering but I'm still full of pain killers and tired so sorry that I didn't take your post in correctly :)

Thank you and I'm glad you think the image is beautiful, its always nice when people appreciate what I do and If I can I like to try give a little back like the bts, or with lighting or any other help.

It would be good to think of a good name for that type of stuff but really composite photography is used quite a lot, some of it even mixes it up with CGI like 3d rendering.. Elevendy do some cracking stuff and while I wouldn't really call it photography if they are computer generating things and putting them into images they still use photography as part of there images and some are pretty sweet.

Well if you look up "When the Day's Work is Done" you will find a photographer from 1877 called Henry Peach Robinson who combined negatives to create images so its really nothing new and certainly not something new because of computers or photoshop since it was done in the days of darkrooms although the level of skill to do such a thing would have been much higher but then so would the simple process of taking and developing images too.

Everything in my image was made of photographs that I had took within the time line, nothing was computer generated (ie rendered or drawn from scratch) its just that these days computers are used to develop images and make things easier... if I was a photographer in the older days and skilled at darkroom developing I no doubt would have tried to do the same thing :)

I love all types of photography and ofc try to stick to the limits of different types of things or comps, like when I was taking photographs of different parts of a church for their website to show off function rooms (including using models and stuff to sort of act roles in the images) thinks were done to look as natural and true to life (well slightly better than life.. as we try to make things look their best) and wouldn't be adding in giant rabbits and such then but since the rules for this were no limits to post processing that to me said be as creative as you want so I used that to try do something different.

That's what's good about photography as a medium, it can be used to freeze snippets of time to show us things we could miss, to slow time down and see things in a new way or set up and be creative with lighting, make-up models and even post work to be creative and bring idea's to life.

I can't really draw, I'd probably suck at painting but with my camera I have a way to be creative and my only real wish is that I found it sooner in my life instead of my late 20's.

---------- Post added 07-13-2014 at 09:04 PM ----------

I seem to have forgot how to edit... but I do think the prize is pretty great, for me it would be such an upgrade over my k5 as it struggles in low light event work and the wifi tethering could mean I can hide it in places when being creative and the extra detail would be great in my studio.

I would love to buy one but having just opened my studio in January, four kids (with an awesome wife) and just after an op in hospital (so have to take it easy for 2 weeks) money wise things are pretty tight so while I don't think I have a chance to win I'm doing my best because I would appreciate it so much and it would be a good help for everything I do :)

nice test and a good image.

I would say that if you got lower down and didn't include so much empty space bellow your daughter it would have worked better, its harder to frame this type of shot so I somtimes use a wider lens to frame and then switch to a longer lens to start the process.

I did this type of thing recently with my comp entry #101 with some bts into if its of any use to you?

keep it up :)

Yea.

No idea why. Possibility because its such a good prize and some might see it as cheating?

The only reason I did it was because the rules allowed and because the quality of the images was so high that I felt I had to push myself or I would have done something different.

At the end of the day though. I got this far in a comp full of great photographers which is an achievement in itself an am so proud and to top it off a cool image of my daughter :)

So really in a way I'm already a winner and really glad I entered the comp.

Was hard to vote too. And ILLmatic173 don't worry about it.. it seems trying to do something special might have backfired lowering my chances in a comp full of amazing images.

Ah well :).
