A visibly class leading optical viewfinder would be a wonderful selling point.

Will the Pentax K-30's AF rival that of Canikon?

From having used a D700 extensively, and a D300s and D7000 for shorter periods of time, there is a very large AF.C gap for pentax to close. It is not just the focus motors either. For shooting erraticly moving action like children for example, the D700 with a slower focusing lens will acquire focus quicker and more accurately than the K-5 with a fast focusing lens. This is even with the additional handicap of reduced DOF that the D700 sometimes faces. I hope the gap can be closed, but it will likely take more effort than has been put into the K30's AF.

As an aside, I have sometimes wondered if Nikon and Canon "got there first" with some AF related patents, and have claimed some of the easier ways to improve AF performance. This is pure conjecture.

Some Full-frame shots & thoughts

I have enjoyed reading through this thread. There is a lot of experience and talent represented by the posters. Thank you for sharing.

I am pondering trying out a D700, but as that would require selling off quite a bit of my Pentax kit, I am waffling over the decision. Full frame advantages and all that look nice, but the real reason I am pondering a partial or full system switch is low light AF performance. I have pretty bad eyes, so manual focusing is not an option for me at all. I am fully reliant on AF. Too often with my K20D, I am trying to take shots of my children doing something picture worthy indoors, and by the time the K20D settles on focus 3-4 seconds later, the moment has passed. Although I like experimenting with many types of photography, these indoor (constantly moving) children shots are by far the most important to me. After that ramble I will finally get to my question.

Have any of you experienced D700 shooters had a chance to put the K-5 through it's paces for this type of shot? Is the K-5 low light AF performance closer to a K20D experience or a D700 experience?

Thanks for reading. The reason I chose to post here is because the other k-5 AF threads compare to other Pentax units. If this is too much of a thread hijack, I will happily delete and post in a different thread.
