Thematic Post Your Portrait-Orientation Landscapes!
Posted By Outis
Replies: 527

(This was inspired by NaHoruk's Post Your Telephoto Landscapes thread.)

Landscapes are, as the name would suggest, most commonly shot in landscape orientation. But what about landscapes shot in portrait orientation?

Whether to take advantage of a strong vertical element...

To take advantage of a particularly interesting foreground...

Because of the Rule of Thirds...

Or because your lens just wasn't wide enough otherwise...

...I think landscapes in portrait orientation are actually pretty great. :D

Have any examples of your own to share?

Lenses for Yosemite, San Francisco, Pacific highway trip by a Brit!!

FWIW, I'm in the middle of a similar trip. So far, I'd estimate my lens usage to be about 60% 20-40mm Limtied, 25% 77mm Limited, and the rest divided between the 15mm Limited and the 8mm Samyang fisheye. The 55-300 comes out occasionally for wildlife. In the past I've used the 15mm Limited way more, but I seem to be on a telephoto kick at the moment.

Are You Expressing Your Creativity or Just Pressing Buttons?

I don't think there's a conflict between just pushing buttons and expressing my creativity. In the field, I take every shot I think might turn out well. Most of the artistic decisions for me come in editing/postprocessing.

Parakeet for Pentax

My parakeet, Gracie, loves playing with my camera. She thinks it's the world's best bird toy-- it's got straps and buttons and dials that you can tug at, some shiny surfaces where you can see your reflection, AND it makes all these fun grindy/beepy sounds. I tried to make a video of her playing with my camera, but of course she had other plans...

Yes! I love that lens-- it's sharp, I love the styling, I love the small size and shape, and I almost never miss having a larger maximum aperture. It and the 15mm Limited are the main things that are keeping me from wanting a K-1. I wish they'd make more lenses like this for full-frame.

It was inappropriate for him to compete in the first place-- contests should be a way to give back to the organization's supporters, not line the pockets of the organization's leaders. It's a serious conflict of interest, and even if they take steps to avoid that, it's still incredibly tacky.

Landscape Painting Tips for Photographers

I recently found two blogs about landscape painting that have a lot of applicability to the artistic side of landscape photography:

Lori McNee

Stapleton Kearns

These two blogs kept me occupied for a full week while I was laid up after getting out of the hospital, so there's a lot of stuff there-- design, color theory, art history, and detailed discussions of what makes good paintings good and bad paintings bad. It'll take me a while to absorb everything I read, but I've already started to apply their knowledge to my photography, and it's made a world of difference in my work. I highly recommend them!

I hate Adobe (rant)

Adobe's business practices have made me really, really frustrated lately.

-- I do not like their new subscription model for their software. It assumes you can pay for it out of a steady income stream, which people may not have. What if you need the software on a grant, which will run out, or what if you don't have job security or know how much money you'll be bringing in from month to month? And even if you could commit to $X a month, there's no guarantee Adobe won't substantially jack up the price down the road. I'd rather pay a lump sum and be done with it.

-- I wanted Photoshop so I could use the many astrophotography tutorials that are out there. There was still a way to buy a non-subscription version of Photoshop Elements 15, so I bought that. It turns out that it doesn't have the tools I would need. There wasn't any indication at the time that what I was buying wasn't the full version or that there were tools I wouldn't be getting. So, I wasted $100 or whatever for software that doesn't even do what I needed it to do. If I wanted to spend a ton of time trying to figure this out on my own, I could have used GIMP for free.

-- Their customer service is terrible. I bought Lightroom instead of Photoshop by mistake, and it took over a month for them to refund my money. This involved spending close to an hour on their technical support chat on two occasions while their customer service representatives alternately sat idle and shuffled me between multiple people who did not know how to fix my problem. I then had to wait weeks for the promised e-mail follow-ups.

I do not pirate software, but if I did, I would have long ago reached the threshold where I would have pirated their stuff. And my experiences to date have further cemented my conviction not to go with their subscription model-- I don't want to have to deal with them any more in any capacity. What a giant waste of time and money.

Support B&H workers

From B&H's side, it sounds like the reason for the move isn't to screw over workers, but because they couldn't find a big enough space at affordable enough prices in the NYC area. From the union side, is this not the real reason? Is there some alternative that does exist in the NYC area? I'd like to hear a somewhat more nuanced view than just "stop the move!"

The K-3: The Honey Badger of Cameras

(The scene: A windswept basketball court atop a hill, during the golden hour. A wind advisory is in effect.)

(Outis sets her K-3 up on her lightweight carbon-fiber tripod, sets the intervalometer going for one exposure every 4 seconds, and begins taking selfies)

K-3: Snap!

(strikes a pose)

K-3: Snap!

(strikes another pose)

K-3: Snap!

(strikes yet another pose)

K-3: Snap!

(wind begins to blow tripod over)

K-3: Snap!

(Outis starts to run forward in slow motion)

(K-3 hits the ground)

Outis: NOOOOOOO!!!!!

K-3: Snap!

(Outis is puzzled. She picks the camera up.)

K-3: Snap!

(She turns it over in her hands.)

K-3: Snap!

(She reviews the photos on the back. They look fine.)

K-3: Snap!

(She finally stops the intervalometer, checks to make sure the viewfinder looks OK, sticks the camera back on the tripod, splays the tripod legs out as far as they'll go, and sets the intervalometer going again.)

K-3: Snap!

I've done both-- using only the 21mm for an outing and using only the 15mm for an outing-- and did brilliant shooting both times. Flip a coin and rock whichever lens you pick.

Sigma 30mm f/1.4? It's listed as $499 on B&H. You still might do better with a better body-- better high ISO performance, better autofocus. I use my 40mm indoors with my K-3 all the time and don't have any problems, for instance.
