Flickr and "Explore"

I've had around 20 photos in Explore. I think this is the secret.
Join this group:
Daily Challenge (By Month) -
Upload a photo a day on Flickr and embed the link in the daily thread. Also comment on the other photos in the group (mostly on Flickr). It's not a cynical exercise. You do it because you're genuinely engaged with others' photos. The attention will be returned. It's really a friendly group of photographers.
So not only do you improve because you're doing a photo a day. But your constant activity on Flickr boosts your Explore algorithm metrics. And then every now and then your photo will be deemed by the computer to be interesting enough to be featured. There is no human judgment involved in this process apart from development of the criteria.
The only flaw in this approach is I think the algorithm has been tweaked recently to favour the Pro subscribers. But prove me wrong.

I'm really happy with my Epsom V550 scanner. Although some people here swear by lightbox and camera scanning.
Also what I love is the process. It's quite relaxing and the excitement when it works out never abates. I've lost entire rolls through mistakes but it's part of the adventure.
I use the Massive Dev app which is available on Apple and Google and sets up timers depending on film type and chemicals used. It's not essential but takes away the guesswork.
The fastest way to learn about photography is to use film and shoot manually. It slows you down and there's absolutely no chimping. But make sure you have a notebook and record the setting for each shot. Although I must confess it's something I never do.

New Pentax Cameras Make Us All Richer!

I've just bought a brand new KP. For some reason it was priced below a new K70. And for a little bit more I also sprung for the battery grip. Why would anyone pay retail when prices are all over the place? You just need to be patient.
This is my first new Pentax since my K5. No doubt there'll be some obvious IQ benefits especially in low light.
What surprises me is how there's constant raves about the Sony A6xxx and the Fujifilm while the KP et al languish. Ironically they're probably too cheap. Pentax should have kept everything the same and targeted the top end of the market. This is how marketing works isn't it?
The best Pentax can do is feature on the Mattias Burling underrated camera series.

It's a double edged sword. It's like being in the 'Where are they now' file.

Videoing with DSLR

I have a Lumix GX85 and a GoPro for video. For photos I have K5 which I'm still really happy with and GR. I have a few film cameras which I've discovered are completely useless for video. There's an old expression Jack of all trades, master of none. I think this applies to cameras as well as people.

RICOH GRIII Officially Announced

I have too many cameras, but the Ricoh GR is by far my favourite. It can be used one handed and has that elusive fun factor. It's also practically invisible. Really looking forward to better high ISO performance, stabilisation and touchscreen focus point.
It'll be in under the tree for Xmas even if I have to buy it for myself.

Chatting about developing film at birthday party and a former colleague offered me her 1980s Nikon FA for nix. Met to pick it up this morning. 'I'm glad it's going to a good home' she said. 'Better than just throwing it away'.
It's mint!

Canon announces EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera at aggressive $1,299 price - The Verge
My guess is it'll demystify full frame by making it accessible and ordinary. Hopefully it'll make photographers more critical about the sort of camera they really need.

First outing with new acquisition Olympus 35SP. I loaded it with Delta 400 but first chance to use it was a summer beach holiday. I love Delta because of the contrasty low light rendering but sunny beach days just kill it. However these ones turned out OK. The photos were taken either in shade or when it was overcast.

You might find the Ricoh GRII being discounted now that a new model is on its way. If you want wide, sharp and small you can't do better.
On our recent big trip I left the K5 at home in favour of the GR. These sorts of holidays are rare for us so I did spend time thinking about what to carry and the quality of photos I wanted to capture. Family travel enforces weight limits. I also brought a Lumix M43 with a kit lens. But I also ended up taking quite a few photos with an iPhone. In good light phone cameras can be surprisingly good.

Canon starting to butcher Sony in FF mirrorless (as predicted)

If one week Sony sells 99 out of the 100 mirrorless full frame cameras sold they have 99% market share.
If the next week two new competitors enter the race and each sell 20 mirrorless full frame cameras but this time 140 have been sold Sony's market share will plummet. But they will sell the same number.

I'm maths challenged. But this is what we're talking about isn't it?

I realise this is heresy but you could start investing in another system. But of course it'll be complementary, eg M43 for 4k video. And you could get a k to m43 adapter.

I'm in Hong Kong for a few nights on a family holiday in October. I'll probably only have one chance at camera shopping without causing an insurrection (this is BORING Dad!). Has anyone shopped at Sim City in Mong Kok? Any recommended vendors? I'd like a vintage rangefinder.
