Ah, Bombay Sapphire. The distillery is less than ten miles from where I live, and they do tours and samples! 😜

Thanks, M2 - it was the post that you linked to that turned me on to this method a while back, and have used it since.

I use the method outlined by Paul in ACR, and it’s very effective; you get noise reduction and sharpening in a single step. I generally find that masking between 95 and 100% works best for me.

Variable aperture vs constant aperture zoom lenses

I’m not sure that constant aperture is always better quality than variable; my variable 20-40 beats my previous constant 16-45 at all points (except at having a constant aperture, obviously!), optically and in physical construction. Where there is a noticeable difference is in video, where with a variable aperture zoom, any attempt to zoom while recording is met with an audible jerky change of aperture as you zoom, whereas with a constant zoom, there is no such interruption.

When I was at university studying microbiology in the 1970s (hint regarding first half of screen name!), I learned all about the fermentation process in producing Mexican Pulque (the lecturer pronounced it ‘puke’). I’ve never had the nerve to try it!

Uff da! (Sounds a bit like ‘iechyd dda’, Welsh for ‘cheers’, which is actually relevant!)

K70 as a K5 upgrade?

Arbalist, don’t believe everything that you read about the capabilities of the K-3/II. If you post-process raws then in the real world you are unlikely to see a negative difference regarding low light/noise - I didn’t. But to answer your question: it depends what you’d be happy with. You lose the rugged construction of the flagship line, but gain in image quality.

Great Beeemer story. Reminded me of this one: a keen golfer takes a non-golfing friend for a ride in his new BMW. The friend is very impressed with all the refinements, but then spots a couple of golf tees in the cup holder. ‘What are these for?’ he asks. ‘Oh, I put my balls on those when I’m driving off.’ replies the driver. ‘Wow,’ responds the friend, ‘BMW thinks of everything.’

Ok, back to videoing in 3K...

I have an original Asahi Pentax-branded adapter, and I always understood that the correct method for using it was to screw the adapter onto the M42 lens first, and then just bayonet it onto the camera, which prevents having to mess about in the camera’s throat. Also, the Pentax adapters are simple to remove without a tool.

Congratulations on the K-1! The adapter should be easy to remove, as it looks like a genuine Pentax one. One of the two slots in the face has a small spring behind it - if you use the two nails of thumb and forefinger, one in each with the forefinger nail moving the spring inwards. Then rotate the adapter anti-clockwise and remove.
