It is rare that I comment on a photo, even if I consider it to be outstanding.

Dave, your picture is spectacular. Thanks for posting it!

big aperture 50 - 55 mm lens for Pentax K-5

I went through the same decision process and chose the Sigma. I have never looked back. Super sharp at f1.4 and through-out the aperture range. Heavy, but that says loads about the build quality. It is a super lens.

Thanks! I consider your comments very high praise indeed as I have had the pleasure of seeing some of your work as well!

The otters were tough to shoot. It was very foggy and I have to shoot at f8.0 or smaller with the Sigma 150-500. I ended up shooting at 1/160s and it blurred a bit. I should have bumped up the ISO.

Thanks again!

Driving Hwy 1 yesterday made some stops to take some pictures. I wasn't disappointed with the sights, but you guys will have to let me know how the pictures came out.

The elephant seals are in mating mode as well as molting their skin. I was very lucky to have seen them so close!

Thanks for looking!

These were all shot hand-held, I apologize for the blur in some of them......

Which third party grip?

I have had the 3rd party grip on my K5 and it isn't worth the $80 I paid. It broke after less than a year. I have, now, the OEM Pentax and it is FAR better in terms of quality, build and ergonomics, worth every penny. The 3rd party grips are cheaply built, the ink comes off in the first month or so, batteries report being empty when they are full... Not worth the hassle at all.

In market for walkaround lens

I have the DA 16-45 and the Sigma 18-200. I find the Sigma to produce pretty good quality images and I usually turn to it for walking around taking general photos. The DA 16-45 is a better lens, but for the range of focal length I can give up the slight decrease in IQ that the Sigma provides.

Battery grip for the K5

I had the after-market grip for about 18months and it was never really "right." It always showed full batteries as 3/4 full, paint came off all the switches, etc and it finally (just before I retired it) would report a fresh battery as empty (I verified this by placing the battery in the K-5 and the meter showed full).

I have an original Pentax grip for each of my cameras now (K-5, K20D) and in hindsight, I should have just shelled out the cash for the Pentax product in the first place.

Yeah...... I have only one bag for my gear (see signature for list) and it all fits. It weighs over 50 lbs and I have to lean so far forward when I shoulder it that all I can see is the ground. The problem is.... I carry it everywhere "just in case."

with k-5: live view, green mode, AF method on face detection, flash up.

IF the k5 was the only camera available and it a once in a lifetime impromptu shot. Other wise I would have brought a tripod and used self timer.

Yes, I agree it is not perfect and probably not functional enough for any real world application. I just found it to be cool.

Thanks, also for the technical explanation of how it works!!! Extremely interesting!!!

I just tried this with the same setup except no live view and the focus indicator does not track/follow the last focused on item. So, no I don't think so.

Maybe this is widely known, maybe not. I could not find it anywhere in the manual.

I was messing around with live view the other day and set the K5 up as follows:

Live view to contrast AF
AF to constant (C)
Focus select to SEL

When you focus on something, as long as you keep pressing the shutter release half-way, the camera will track it and keep the focus box locked to whatever you initially focused on until it comes close to the outside of the Live view area or out of focus then it re-focuses.

This works as you move closer or farther away as well.

This may be common info, but I found it to be a pretty cool trick. I think it would be great for sports or street photography.

Question on Generic Items

I bought the third party grip for my K5 and used it for about a year and a half. Toward the end, it was showing freshly charged batteries as depleted. After throwing away a few batteries I decided to experiment and took the grip off, took a battery that showed depleted in the grip and placed it in the K5 body where it showed fully charged. I threw the grip away and ordered the Pentax grip which works perfectly. I also have a Pentax grip for my K20D which has never shown any problems in 3 1/2 years of use. The previous poster who said was absolutely correct.

Concur. I lived in Europe for 6 years serving to protect our allies (we carried guns, by the way). There was a movement in Germany while I was there to do away completely with the German military based solely on the fact that the US was there to protect them.

There is a definite stigma about firearms over there.

What's the difference between destruction of this thing with a gun or a baseball bat or a big rock or running it over with a car? Just because the guy used a gun doesn't make him mentally unbalanced.

I bought one of those things for about $60, 5 years ago and IMO it isn't worth a darn. Blurry, colors all over the place.
