If freight is the only sticking point, I can probably alleviate that for you. I'm in Canberra and have family in Melbourne (where DCW have stores) and Brisbane... so would be happy to sort something out with you. You've been around these parts long enough I know you wouldn't stiff me... PM me if you get a reasonable price besides freight and we can go from there...

Ash - I can second VladM's experience in terms of Lens/Misc stuff. I haven't personally gotten a body through them, but back when the 'bag out Aus retailers for "gouging" customers whingefest' was in full swing, a few peeps here on PF got K-5 bodies from them and I never saw any follow up complaints. I even recall someone had the old String-of-Pearls issue and had it sorted out... And I know a few others around the place that have taken the leap and gotten bodies from them, with the usual rate of pentax hit-n-miss on stuff (I recall at least one had a lens release button issue that they self-repaired anyway...).

I'm considering a K-5 IIs at the moment, and was looking at DWI myself.

But Digital Camera Warehouse are worth contacting - they are an actual Bricks & Mortar store and can often be persuaded to price match or at least expand the offering to near-price match.. throw in a Lowepro or a reasonable priced lens etc.. And if you contact CRK privately, and are reasonable in your negotations, they can often be persuaded to come damn close to the price as long as you aren't trying to break their arm using low-ball fly-by-nighters as a base of negotiations :)

Throwable Panoramic Ball Camera // Jonas Pfeil

Via HackaDay:

QuoteQuote:

This odd-looking ball can automatically take a panoramic image whenever you throw it up into the air. Seriously, that’s then entire set of operating instructions for the device. Inside, a 3D printed frame hosts an array of 36 cellphone cameras, each capable of taking a two megapixel image. Also included is an accelerometer. When it senses the change in momentum associated with the apex of its vertical trajectory it snaps an image with all of the cameras at the same time. The result is a spherical image with no obstructions-like a tripod or other support mechanism. The images are automatically stitched together and displayed on a computer which allows the user to pan and zoom.

The whole story is told in the video after the break. The example images shown are quite good, although there are a few artifacts where the segments meet. Most notably, color variances between the images captured by different CCD modules. We’d image that this can be fixed automatically in software if a talented programmer were willing to put in the time. The thing about spherical photos is that methods using post processing to unwrap an image always have some distortion to them. With that in mind, we think the ball camera is as good a solution as we’ve seen.

Correct. Back in the very early 90's I worked for an Electronics Supplier. Other sales guys where all over the Mobile Phones that had just started hitting retail outlets... they thought selling these $1500 bricks was a ticket to high commissions.

However - the place paid Commision based on Gross Profit Margin. I made more commission each month selling $0.08c Resistors and $0.50 Capacitors because A: I could move dozens of the bastards ("You should buy some spares.. you never know... be a pain to come all the way back for a $0.08 component!"), B: they were all about 900% markup where as the phones and PC's where about 80-100%.

I answered this thread over a week ago when the local was $1.49... If you want to correct me by $0.04 a week later ... By all means... But... Where are you pulling this 4.54L/USGallon from ? There is 3.78L per US Gallon. The 4.54 is when dealing with Imperial Gallons - which aren't what we are discussing here (we are talking US Gallons.... Which means you should have said fuel cost $5.78/US Gallon .... )

Go to Google. Type in "1 US Gallon in Litres". You will see the huge answer at the top that says
1 US gallon = 3.78541178 litres

You aren't aware I take it there is a difference between an Imperial Gallon, and a US Gallon ? Just like there is a difference between a US Ton, an Imperial Ton and a Metric Tonne.... The OP and rest of early thread contributors where all US/Canada based, where they use, you guessed it, US Gallons... So hence Gallons in the context of this thread are US Gallons and not Imperial Gallons....

Thanks dom - I was quite pleased with them for what was just mucking around. Maybe thats why - low expectations on final product versus pre-thinking and over-imagining the end result leading to eventual dissatisfaction..

As for the board - Yes! I just threw this one together because the guy who designed it wanted some feedback - new revision due out soon with some changes. Will be using this one for some destructive testing and then the next revision board will be used to try and build a Digital Light Wand using something smaller than the Arduino Mega's....

I am busy procastinating about some Geek based work I need to do - so I decided to take some pics of a board that the local Hackerspace makes (based on a Metalab board, but I digress).

I was really bad - I pulled out 3 strobes, gels and black acrylic bases...

I prefer the blue/cto flash gelled ones to the 'balanced' ones... but meh..

May I interest you in https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/do-yourself/153858-how-remove-fungus-50mm-f1-7-lens.html Sir ? :)

You should be able to fix the stripped screws by 'notching' the head to accept a flat head blade... usually 1-2 sizes up on the blade and some gentle persuasion should get it to bite...

Whilst I agree with your sentiments entirely RobA... has the horse not only bolted on this one, but the barn has also burnt to the ground and they've since built a block of flats where it once stood? :)

I just fear that suggesting this change is like suggesting that the English language starts correctly referring to Oranges as Noranges....

~$AUD5.74 a US gallon (~$1.50/litre)

(Resisting all temptations to state 'A US gallon is about 3.78 Litres where I come from....' :p )

I like it - but the undertail and rear swingarm are too dark... as I said above... little bit of extra light on it and that would have been a stunner...

Ditto on the nice friends.. all though true friends would also let you ride it for a week to be able to get a feel for what surrounds would truly compliment it ;)

As for feedback - First one is the benchmark for sure. Next two are good close in shots - although one of the rear rim and swingarm in context with the ducktail would have been a good addition...

The last two - are good. But I would have thrown some more light on the bike, maybe gelled to match the dusk lighting (even though its changing every 30 seconds I know... but something close... ;) ). In the 2nd last pic bit more on the right of the bike, in the very last, bit more on the left of the bike. And on both of them I would have gone for a bit of rim light in a shot - not sure if it would work or start looking a little too contrived but might have worked.. even just popping one end of the bike like the top cowl or the ducktail...

But either way - I'd have been happy walking away with the first one ! :)

Thanks guys for the comments.

Dave: Would cropping it a little tighter improve it for you ? I really suck at composition still.... so happy for the feedback.

Ash: Yes, it is kinda fun.. and I know the light in this one is way off - I just grabbed the umbrella and turned it around since we'd gone from shooting 5m's away from the camera to 0.45m's  What would be 'good' lighting if I was deliberately going for the look... some sort of Rembrandt type effect with a decent rim light ?

Was just mucking around with my beautiful other half taking some pictures at the parents request before she heads overseas for a for a year for work.

At the end of our 'session' she insisted on being a dork and I had to capture it as I was using a remote trigger .. the second one came out ok after I told her to back it up a little. The first one I still kind of like even though it ended up focus locked on her hair - I like the rim light from the gelled flash and .. not sure.. but I still like it anyway ;)

Hopefully this works - these are actually marked 'friends/family' on flickr for various reasons - so let me know if they don't appear (trying direct linking which should still work...)

Or you can add it yourself... could squeeze it into the K10/20 battery grips - but I dont think it'd fit on the K5 grips..

ADH8066 Evaluation Board - SparkFun Electronics for the GSM side
Venus GPS Logger with SMA Connector - SparkFun Electronics for the GPS side.

You can recode the firmware on the GPS module, so it can talk direct to the GSM module.

There you go - instant tracking module with Cellular Communication (and offline logging - so you can also 'store' where the thief has been/goneto etc and retrieve it via SMS/MMS/GPRS.... )

Its called Diplomacy. :)

Not the US definition, Which I believe is "Do it our way or else", but you know, the actual International version which means "Negotiation"... which infers "Compromise" by both parties...

QuoteQuote:

di·plo·ma·cy
1: the art and practice of conducting negotiations between nations
2: skill in handling affairs without arousing hostility

It might be worth noting the second entry of the definition there - "Skill in handling affairs without arousing hostility"....

"Do it the way we want or we aren't playing" isn't Diplomacy - well - in the rest of the world anyway..... And Negotiations fundamentally require compromise - not one side thumping its chest...

Maybe stumbling on this part of the definition, and the sort of general attitude towards Diplomacy thats shown in here and other threads is why despite the economic power the US has/once had, its in fact seen as an Adversary in many many circles... ? :) The key being - In International Relations there is no "Number 1" - there just is "Everyone".. that would appear to be another stumbling block.... You can't even dream of having a truly equal (and peaceful) world when certain people sitting at the table have a slight superiority complex.... Or at the very least - Recognising that the rest of the world has a "First Amendment Right" just as much as the US ? ;) ;) Perhaps this is the down side to indoctrination from birth that "We're Number One!" (which I admit has a much better ring to it than "We're all Equal!" - but still?)

(Edit: Interesting and poignant - The Wikipedia Page for "Diplomacy" has... a Picture of the UN Headquarters at the very top!!  )

Viewing the images is based on what they set you as.. i.e.. if their images are marked "friend/family" and you aren't listed as one of their contacts as a friend or family - it wont work.
You making them a contact, and setting them as friend of family, effects the visibility of your images to them, not theirs to you...

And as noted - situation normal for a few people - I know a lot that have their entire streams marked 'friends' or 'family' only for a number of reasons...

Nothing to be seen here.. move along ;) :)

Haven't watched the full version, the preview was kinda cool though.. I'm very curious about how people get such great street shots (i always end up super self-concious and put the camera away again  ). Might settle in and watch it later today if I get a chance...

Its the Peter Principle at work: Peter Principle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

QuoteQuote:

The Peter Principle states that "in a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence", meaning that employees tend to be promoted until they reach a position at which they cannot work competently. It was formulated by Dr. Laurence J. Peter and Raymond Hull in their 1969 book The Peter Principle, a humorous [1] treatise which also introduced the "salutary science of hierarchiology."

A reasonable essay on it can be read at Incompetence Dynamics ...
