The Samyang 24/1.4 is great for astro...one of the best options at any price or focal length. If Pentax could hit that with autofocus and waterproofing, I'd buy without hesitation.

It's not a perfect comparison. But if you're going to nit-pick, at least get your nit-picking right...there's no such thing as a Tokina 15-30, for any mount.

You're right, including the Rokinons throws things off a little, though they are optically pretty much as good as the major brand lenses.
But even if you take those focal lengths out, and match up only the AF lenses, Pentax still has a pretty big price advantage over Canon, Nikon and Sony.

Interesting article here on PetaPixel.
How Much a Full Pro Camera and Lens Set Costs for Each Brand

Though the methodology isn't ideal, Pentax does come out well ahead from a value perspective.

And the comments are interesting.

Safe to use soot on a lens?

I'm pretty sure lens caps are what keeps dust from falling on to the lens.

Using them in real environments means they will get dust, smudges and spots on them.
Get a strong blower, a soft brush and I've had pretty good luck with gently using Zeiss lens wipes.
I wouldn't voluntarily get soot anywhere near my lenses.

There are a variety of astro oriented software programs designed to do this if you don't want to do it in camera. Two of the more well-known ones are Deep Sky Stacker and Sequator(which is what I use).

Or the 24/1.4.

Though the 15-30 and perhaps the 11-18 may also be equally good, though more expensive and in the case of the 15-30, much larger.

Did you purposely use a focus of less than inifinity? Stars are all at infinity, you shouldn't use less than unless the markings on your lens are off(which they can be).
But for stars you should focus by using live view to zoom in on a bright star. Adjust the focus until you the star is as small and sharp as possible...that's what you should consider infinity.
Also some of the reviews I saw of this indicated that it was soft until f5.6, so if you were shooting wide open, that also might be part of the issue.

I'd choose the 14mm or 16mm Samyang's over the fisheye for astro.

Thanks for the report. I'm seriously considering buying this and selling the 15-30(which is a very good lens, just large).

K1 II - best legacy budget lens on the best price to IQ value ratio for the lowest $

I guess I'd have a different take on this. Unless you have some artistic reason for really wanting to use legacy glass, the first lens I'd buy for the K-1 would be the 28-105.
It's very good, probably close to the quality of many legacy primes, not too expensive, pretty fast-focusing, and WR.

I've lost the tripod foot to my 70-200 how can I get another?

I have a 70-200, and it is a fantastic lens, but...
This is exactly the sort of thing that drives people to Canon and Nikon. I can't imagine either of those companies not making a replacement foot for a flagship level pro lens something that is reasonably easily obtainable.
For all the talk about lens and body roadmaps, this is something trivially easy to fix, that takes almost no investment from Ricoh, and that would keep a big-spending customer happy.

Smaller bag for hikes

I spend a lot of time hiking in rugged terrain in the mountains and deserts of UT.
I've had a Mindshift, and have a LowePro AW 450. The Lowepro is fine if the hike I'm doing is short, less than 5 miles, and if it's mostly a photo hike and I'm taking a bunch of my full frame gear. I can put up with the weight.

But neither are as good as dedicated hiking/backpacking packs for comfortably carrying loads over long distances. If I'm going longer than a half day, then I switch to lighter APS-C stuff, I switch to an Osprey Manta AG pack with an insert, and a Capture Clip on the shoulder strap.

ILC market niches, Leica and Pentax

I've certainly wondered this as well. From a minimal amount of searching, it does look like Leica is doing well financially.
They do have a niche...very high end and I think a little more oriented to street photography.

Seems like Pentax could build on their existing strengths in landscape and still photography to go down a similar road, but it would mean giving up entirely on trying to compete in video/wildlife/sports. Which they barely do now any way. But also on the lower/value end of the market, which would probably be more painful to a lot of the current Pentax user base.

A Tale of 2.5 Lenses - The Moon, 55-300, and 500mm

One other trick that was pointed out to me relative to focusing on the moon in Live View is to use Movie mode instead of Photo. For some reason Movie is better able to deal with the extremely bright object and high contrast and allow good focusing. Then once you get the focus nailed, switch back to Photo mode.
