I'd Print and Hang This - Your Best Film Shots

I posted this image early on in my PF life. It is my most favorite of all the photos I've ever captured.

During the summer of 1986, my Ex and I were on a 4 day-3 night "free" trip to Acapulco we "won" after falling for a timeshare sales pitch. On this day we were watching the cliff divers from the opposite side of the inlet. I attempted shots for every dive, perhaps 8 to 12, and this one stands out. The contrast of the cliff and the water and the diver (maybe 12 years old) in mid-air with both the cliffs and the sea as backdrop - that's what works for me.

I kept a 5x7 print of this on a cork board at my office. I would print this in large format, perhaps as an inspirational poster with "Confidence" or "Daring" emblazoned along the bottom. However, I lost the negative many many years ago. Below is a scan of the 5x7 print, with some scratches and the push pin hole created when I first hung it at the office.

I used my K1000, a J.C. Penny 80-200mm zoom lens, a 2x converter (not sure if I used it), and probably some variety of 100 speed Kodak film - as I preferred minimal grain.

A few shots from last fall - it takes me a while to accumulate 36 exposures. :asleep:

These were shot on Velvia 50, using my KX with a SMC M50/1.4

The first one was right from Dwayne's scan result. The last three I used the Elements levels tool to tweak the lighting a bit.

cheers,

Welcome to the forums. Your experience is similar to mine. I found my old K1000 while cleaning out a closet a few years ago. Then I found this site, which helped get me interested in photography again. I eventually set my camera to Eric to correct a light leak. It was returned in like-new condition. You won't be disappointed with Eric's work.

In 1977, the U.S Army paid a Private First Class (E-3 with three years service) $504.19 monthly. In January 2016, that monthly pay will be $2,082.00.

- Pentax K (use frequently)
- Pentax 645 (use frequently)
- Canon FD (seldom used, but it's loaded and waiting)

I really need to get out more.

Some time ago I posted this in another thread. But it fits here as well.

This is a scan of a 4x6 print - the negative is long gone. Captured in April 1987 with a K1000 and JCP 80-200mm zoom, I probably used a 100 asa Kodak film. I may have used a 2x TC as well.

This particular diver was about twelve years old. Somewhere I have a photo him and the other divers that day. I should scan that too.

The orb at top-center is the hole from the push-pin that kept the photo on my bulletin board.

Cheers,
Fred

Pentax repair by Eric Hendrickson

The result Eric provided tdemmz - and monochrome's character remark - reminded me of an experience I had with Eric. I had shipped him a newly acquired KM for a CLA. The KM was in near-pristine condition externally, and I wanted it's working condition to be flawless as well. So off to Eric it went.

Within about ten days I received the camera back from Eric - much earlier than expected. The invoice indicated the CLA was performed and there was no charge for the service. I emailed Eric to find out why he was working for free. He told me while removing my bubble-wrap from the KM, he had an accident with the razor knife and accidentally scratched the top plate. He explained he had just replaced the blade on the knife with a new one, and it cut faster and deeper that he expected.

Eric decided not to charge me for the CLA due to the scratch, which is is a testament to his character and the reason I'm sharing this story. Well, I didn't even notice the scratch - I considered it minor and insignificant. So I paid him anyway, and he was most grateful.

We all make mistakes. What distinguishes one person from the next is how we react afterwards.

After months of enjoying the images here, I finally decided to add my first post in this thread. I bought my first MF kit about seven months ago - a P645 with the 75mm lens. Over time I also picked up the 45mm and 150mm. I've been slowly getting acquainted with the system - only shot five rolls in seven months so far. Here are a few shots from my most recent roll. These were shot on Ektar 100 with the 75mm lens, Dwayne's developed and scanned them, no post other than re-sizing.

When I pressed the shutter for the first time to advance the film, I thought the 645 was going to drop out of my hands. The clack of the shutter and then the whirring of the motor drive startled me. I love the fact that I'll be able to capture more detail above 135 film. But for now, I need to improve my technique so that I get more keepers. The weight of the camera may force me to depend on a tripod, but I prefer to shoot handheld whenever I can. I suppose none of that was very "glowing". But I'm glad I bought it, I enjoy learning to use it, and I know I'll improve over time.

Thanks Jonathan. I'm hoping I get more keepers as I grow more accustomed to using the 645. Nice job with your MX. I like the second one best.

@malinku, I like the shot of the hand pump.

Hi, my name is Fred and it's been four months since my last...oops, wrong group. But really, I haven't made a single post to any thread since November. Lots of reading, no posting.

In the meantime, seeing all these medium format images peeked my interest enough to get myself a Pentax 645. I've only shot three rolls so far, learning as I go. I thought these might be worth sharing...

All were lab developed and scanned.

+1 for Dwayne's. I use them to develop, print, and scan. Turnaround time for me is about ten days or less. They haven't failed me yet.

I use Dwayne's Photo (A trusted name in photo processing for over 50 years - Dwayne's Photo) for my developing. For every roll (35mm) I send them, I write some identifying information on the plastic canister which contains the roll. For the return trip, the results of each roll is placed in it's own envelop, with the same identifying info written on it.

Typically, the only info I care about is which camera I used and the date I finished the roll. For example, I'd write "KX 11-16-14" on the canister, and that's what is on the envelope when the work is returned.

I should point out that this happened completely by accident. I had written the info on the canisters for my own benefit while the undeveloped film was still in my possession, assuming that the canister would get tossed at the lab and that would be the end of it. I was pleasantly surprised to find the information copied to the envelops when the developed film was returned.

And turnaround time isn't too bad. I recently mailed three rolls on a Friday (from Maryland to Kansas). Dwayne's received it on Monday and had the results in the mail to me that Friday. That worked out nicely, as the weekends were used for shipping time.

EDIT: I neglected to mention the CDs... Dwayne's does not label them. But you can do that yourself since the envelop has the information you need.
