K-7 Composition adjust explained

Recently someone asked me if I had used the composition adjustment to frame a scene where I took two images from the same location years apart. Because so much of getting the scene right was about camera heights and angles I did not use it. It did get me thinking about it's purpose and how it differed from just moving the tripod though and so I put together this post on my blog that explains it. I hope that someone may find it useful.

Pentax K-7 Sensor shift (Composition adjust) | Wallace Koopmans Artlog

I realize I'm a bit of a newbie here at Pentaxforums but I have been taking pictures for more than half my life and own more camera's than I actually know.

Composition Adjustment/Sensor Shift...are you using it?

I've had my K5 for many years now and never really understood the composition adjustment/sensor shift feature until now. I cannot believe I've ignored this brilliant little Pentax feature, especially given my interest in wide angle landscape shooting.

There are a few threads and even a YouTube video or two that explain the use of the feature, but honestly, I never concluded it to be very useful after seeing them.

I just shot a BEFORE/AFTER image in the backyard that pretty much shows the value of shifting the sensor to control converging verticals. Hopefully I can get around to a few other favorite places with my DA15 to really put this tool to work!

First, here's a pic (sorry for the boring content and bad light, ;p )

I used the Sigma 10-20 at 11mm to frame the building. As usual, perspective distortion is evident and becomes more pronounced as straight lines get further from the center of the frame.
Next, I used composition adjustment to shift the sensor up to the max (+24) position and re-composed to match the original composition. This resulted in a very notable correction in converging verticals. [I have even overdone the correction, but you get the idea]

Again, this is nothing new if you have stayed current, but I'm a little slow and want to share a real world example.

How accurate is the electronic level?

As noted above, perhaps neither. The small bubble levels built into QR clamps are usually fairly sketchy. The axis that must be true is that of the panning head. Whether the clamp, plate, and camera body follow is a matter of quality and faith. Large format view camera photographers use a small bullet level to zero the camera. Addition of such to your kit might not be a bad idea if you are particularly picky or are having problems.

My K-5 electronic level was far from, er, level.

My K-1 is pretty well spot on.

To check a level in the camera (or any other level for that matter), first find a smooth level surface and check that the reading of level is the same in all directions. ie rotate it to point 90 degrees different for each reading. :)

It’s quite possible that neither is accurate! You could try putting the camera on a flat, level surface (previously checked with a good level) and see what the electronic level says. Mine was off a bit.

Has anyone else noticed that card slot 1 on the K new is wider towards the top and narrows at the bottom?

Could this slot possibly accept two card types, SD and CFExpress type A slot?

I'm not sure I would want 43mp on APS-C!

Irrespective of the mp count, I find it very surprising that any sensor has been "newly designed and developed for this camera". Pentax has always taken existing sensors in the past and tweaked them to their own liking (with great success).

Wow, thanks for posting that. I've never seen any of the boxes though I do have a couple of the pamphlets. And @sergysergy is right, that is one beautiful lens! Think I'll dig mine out and have a go this weekend.

A) I loved my 12-24 and always recommended it in any "what lens to takes to...?" thread.

B) I don't recall PF ever being a "problem".

C) PF can be minimized in PP.

D) You will normally have many more excellent shots without any PF than a few with.

No they didn't, they made a serious effort in other aspects. They kept the K-mount, so you could use your excisting lenses, and no lenses needed to be developed. But yes, this makes the camera thicker.

They also kept the same battery, which goes in the K-7, K-5 etc. Which is bigger than the battery in nex 5, but also gives you more photo's. And since i do have the K-7 and K-3, swapping batteries is so easy. Don't have to look if I have the right battery, I alwasy do (unless I mix empty with full)

I still use the K-01 a lot, and it never got the credit it deserved, no it isn't the fasted camera. yes it is boxy. But it is very capable.

K-new will be released THIS year

I understand the News and Rumours section here is by definition inhabited by people who are impatient for new things, but I'm afraid on Ricoh/Pentax behalf that I'm not an exceptional outlier - I don't really care that much anymore. I have long since realized that despite upping the MP count, offering marginal gains in AF speed and better shake reduction the quality of my photos are rather constant thorugh the years and dependent on the time and energy I put into them. And I pretty much have the lenses I need.

So Ricoh have to surprise and wow me to make me spend money in their shop - which they are of course welcome to do. I suspect I'll rather be looking at a drone, an action cam or something with better smartphone integration. Something that will complement my DSLR by offering me new creative possibilities.

Now, go ahead. Shoot me. Put me on your ignore list. I do hope the K-New will be a success and you get those lenses you have been waiting for.

Is a 'Fast' lens stopped down the same as a 'slow' lens at the same aperture?

An "f-number" or f-stop, is the ratio of the lens' focal length to the diameter of the physical aperture opening. So, f8 is f8, for any local length, for any lens.

Well they just made an investment in a brand new mount, so of course profits will be down.

All their R&D money is going towards a system that is not selling (yet at least). The lens offering especially, is being seen as expensive and not quite as attractive as what is available for Sony (also seen as expensive) and Canon (even more expensive but at least some innovation and excitement like the 28-70 f2 lens and the new 50 1.2 which are getting rave reviews). Though there's certainly people excited about the Z mount and lenses, especially those who have actually used them. IQ is supposedly super-top-notch - but still, the photography sites and forums haven't been quite as excited from what I can tell.

They haven't released any DSLRs since the D3500 a year and a half ago. Before that, the D850 is now two and a half years old, the D7500 will be 3 years old early next year and the D500 will be 4 years old (good grief, has it been that long?????? time is just flying!!!!!). The D750 is well over 5 years old now*. And DSLRs still bring home the bacon.

The message is clear: they invested all into a new system, and if that new system doesn't sell, they're out of the photography business.

*I am aware that these are all still perfectly good and capable cameras, but the geek mob wants bigger/better specs all the time. Unfortunately this whole "cult of spec numbers" is prevalent in a lot of the photography forums and websites.

Ilford makes terrific films, papers and darkroom chemicals. If you have never tried them you definitely should.

Their unflagging commitment to film photography through some dark days is inspirational to many of us.
