the pattern of whitish " depressions " on these boulders on a kopje in the Serengeti was caused by it being struck by the Maasai as an instrument or a signal device

our guide did not allow us to approach closely nor leave the vehicle because he frequently found lions in the area and there was inadequate open spaces to make it safe.

" Gong Rock of the Serengeti "

" In the Serengeti plains of Kenya Tanzania, there is a large boulder called the Gong Rock that reverberates when hit with a small rock. The pitted surface of the Gong Rock is testament to its use by the Maasai tribe to send sound messages across the vast distance of the African savannah since ancient times. "

regarding your wildlife photos well as those of Noelcm

other than the utterly shocking lack of recent postings of photos featuring cheetahs

I, for one, like the " limited " nature of your guys' wildlife photos

this mallard must have seen " Psycho " shower scene and decided on a bath instead

On my one and only trip so far to Tanzania I mentioned that I thought the AKs being carried by the Rangers would not be effective against large game

I was told that other than noise that could be right but they were carried not for animals but because of poachers

Rationale time

why the SMC Pentax DA 21mm F3.2 Limited as my first Limited ?

1 suggestions of the contributors to this thread thank you all

2 availability and price

after considering the comments, I was looking at either the DA 15 or DA 21, depending on cost and availability - was only considering the Limited primes
and I am satisfied with my DA 40mm XS as well as the D FA 100mm macro so I didn't look at the 35mm or the 40mm or the 70mm

worried that DA 15 was too wide causing distortion and that it was F 4

knew I couldn't afford new

so realistically looking at SMC as opposed to HD

3 was concentrating on a SMC DA 15 in the forum's market place but had to convince spouse before contacting seller and seeing if there was any flexibility in listed price

4 suddenly found a SMC DA 21 being listed by a member leaving Pentax ( sorry to hear that ) and talked to spouse

5 contacted seller and " fought " him down $ .01 so I could maintain my tradition of never paying " listed " price ;)

_______________________________________

so now, I have the HD Pentax DA 3.5-5.6 16 - 85mm wr as my " widest " lens and my SMC Pentax-DA 1.8 50 mm as my " fastest "lens

primes: 21mm, 28mm, 40mm, 50mm and 100mm

zooms: 16-85mm, 18-55mm, 55-300mm, *70-200mm and 150-450mm

three designed for full frame: 28mm, *70-200mm and 150-450mm

all Pentax except for the Kiron 28mm PK/A manual lens

most " experienced " and bought via the forum's market place, thank you to all of those sellers

Urban Dictionary: resistance is futile

I apologize in advance, it really isn't a laughing matter

official statement from Pentax on WR

To quote Pentax

" There is no standard/classification of weather resistant, because it is not waterproof product.

Weather resistance is a material's ability to hold up against deterioration from exposure to harsh elements.
This may include strong sun, wind, rain, humidity, snow or extremely hot and cold temperatures.
Although a material maybe determined to be weather resistant, this does not mean that it will not incur any damage.
You can find more detail information how to carrying the camera in the operating manual page 147 "
