I must like the underdog too. I choose Pentax for the colors, handling and features (any old glass fit without an adapter, in-body SR, etc.). I also prefer Mazda, even though Toyota (Canon) and Honda (Nikon) have a higher market share, who cares? Handling in a Mazda 3 or 5 is sporty; Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic, not so much.
Mazda: built for drivers.
Pentax: built for photographers :-D

The Life of a K100D Super - 117.706 SC -and counting!

Alright, the OP has inspired me to share some K100D Super photos from my past. The images here Pentax K100D Super Photo Gallery by ajuett at pbase.com were taken in early 2008. Various lenses, with one I should have never sold, the M 85mm f/2, it is a fantastic piece of glass. If I find one again and have the money I'll get it!

Samples:

Pentax DA 18-250

might be the DA 50-200

M 135mm f/something ...2.8 or 3.5 model

FA 50mm f/1.4

Nice! I do miss my K100D Super as well. That and the K200D were my first 2 dSLRs. Bring back the top LCD! :)

Make mine with retro-look/feel in the form of a Pentax MX, let's call it: MX-D.

With APS-C, OVF, PASM, ISO, EV, 1/6000 to Bulb and no other fluffy in-body software. Just a no non-sense camera. I live for the day.

Even an updated 135mm f/3.5 in Limited would be fine. 49mm filter and built-in hood too.

An OVF positioned for left-eyed people with pointy noses!

Camera bodies I've been very happy with both in design and functionality. I've had the K100DS, K200D, K-x and now the K-r. The one thing I still miss since the K200D is the top LCD screen.

Prime lenses I'd really like to see in Limited style: 12mm f/4 and 135mm f/1.8.

Also, and this is nit-picking but why not make the whole line weather sealed now? Forget the K-500 and K-r and 18-55 and 50-200 non-WR. Save cost and keep the 18-55 and 50-200WR to match up with the K-50, etc.

Very gloomy day before work, had to take some photos to get a bit of a fix.
Just some quick samples from the K-r:

Sony a58 and missing Pentax

I had a NEX 3N for even a shorter time than the a58. I returned the 3N in a week. The E- mount just means more adapters for any legacy glass. Sony is fine for some, I just don't like EVFs or Sony colours. Nothing they have impressed me.

I looked at the K-01 but I want a built in OVF. I really like the top of the K-r, reminds me of the Super Program I use to have.

Recommendations for lenses to take on holiday to Europe

We did a road trip in the Canadian Rockies in 2008 and a similar trip for 2 weeks last month. The first time around I had a DA 14mm f/2.8 with me which pretty much stayed glued to the K200D at the time. This time I was on another system/brand and the widest I had was 18mm. We have never been to Europe however, seeing the narrow streets in other people's photos I'd go as wide as possible.

So I'm back to a system I prefer. The K-r has less shutter count than mine and it's mint. It's all a matter of comfort and what makes you happy. Once I saw through the OVF again, wow for me, eye relief. I'll miss a few things about the a58, it is a great camera imho and did very well on my recent road trip. ...why is LBA all of a sudden on my mind... uh-oh. ;)

Nobody is selling those used in Craigslist or Kijijiji. There is 1 K-30 but she doesn't want a trade.

Price difference up here in product cost, not dollar exchange is ridiculous. The K-r with those lenses new was around the $900-1000 mark. That's the Canadian government for you :/

Thank you for all the replies and advice. I was pretty busy today so I couldn't get back to you all until now. I realize the K-r is 2 years old and 'might' not have all the thing the a58 'has'. My last Pentax was a K-x and before that a K200D which looking at similar photos the a58 doesn't do any better. ccd33 nailed it for me with their first paragraph. Tomorrow I'm going to meet with the person who has the K-r and decide, its up to both of us to agree so it's not a done deal yet. If everything is in the condition stated in the ad then yes, I'm going for it. I have an A series 28mm f/2.8 from my Dad's day I can wait to use again!

Thanks for the info boriscleto, I appreciate that. He is asking $550 (CDN $) for the K-r and 2 lenses mentioned. I'm not too interested in a super-zoom again. In terms of MP count, 6MP would still do me fine, I never print, I just want good detail, etc. My goal is a 28mm f/2.8 or 3.5 and a fast 85mm or 100mm which can be K, M or A series :)

Not sure if this is the right forum for this but, here it goes...

Swapping advice:

I'm selling my Sony a58 with Tamron 18-270mm PZD to get back into Pentax and there is another seller who has a Pentax K-r and 18-55 (non-WR) & 55-200WR lenses. He says it's mint condition with a 1200ish shutter count. I asked if he wanted to do a straight swap and we will meet as soon as today or probably early next week. Is there anything about the K-r I should look at? Obviously we will both test the cameras in person and if we agree, it'll be a done deal. Too me, the lenses he has don't matter much. I'm may keep the 18-55 but the 55-200mm may go as a trade-in for a manual prime or 2. Opinions, comments are welcome!

In my previous topic I said I'm selling my 2 month old Sony kit, which still stands true. However, I'm in no rush to let it go and if I can't get what I'm asking I'll keep it. Until then I thought I'd share some more photos from my recent road trip in Southern BC and Alberta. Here is a link to the whole series so far: Road Trip 2013 Photo Gallery by ajuett at pbase.com I still have a few days of photo to edit but here are some of the latest:

Ryan, while I agree that most bodies are good these days I mostly miss the Pentax glass and color. Also, the EVF is at times bugging my eyes out. Almost had the Sony sold but the buyer backed out today. Oh well, there is no rush, when it sells it sells. :)

Just got back from a 2 week road trip with 800 photos to go through. I didn't sell the a58 as I thought I'd give it a real chance. I'm happy with the results and considering the all-in-one Tamron 18-270 the system fared very well. Some of the photos have been edited and uploaded here Road Trip 2013 Photo Gallery by ajuett at pbase.com if you are interested :) I'm still a Pentaxian at heart so now things have settled after the trip I'm going to try and sell the Sony.

Thanks Ryan, I know of that site already. I have looked at some Minolta and Sony lenses already and some of it is really nice stuff. However, I might have the Tamron 18-270 sold tonight, possibly with the a58 body as well! If just the lens goes then I'm buying the Sony DT 35mm f/1.8, if the body and lens goes it will just cover a new K-30 with kit lens. Also found a M 28 f/3.5 (had one before, loved it!)
