What to make of this focus test?

When testing my A-50/1.7, I got similar result to yours ("misty" look) when shooting wide open. Everything got normal after closing aperture a bit. I believe the reason is that those lenses are not optimized for digital chip (i.e. the light hits the chip under "wrong" angle)

Here's a conundrum

The display in viewfinder also slightly affects the metering. When you press the shutter and AF-confirmation appears, the camera meters more light, thus decreases exposure. If at the same time the flash-sign flashes on the display, it would explain your metering fluctuation.

Why aren't my images sharper???

This looks like typical motion blure, not soft lens. But since you are using tripod, the problem can be with Sigma's chip - if the lens tells the body incorrect focal length, the SR can cause similar effect. Can you repeat the test without SR ? Or can you analyze EXIF data for some suspicious values ?

The hearing ability decrease with age, especially for higher frequencies. Can you ask somebody else whether your camera beeps ? (it is quite common problem discussed in some older thread)

K-7 - Firmware 1.01 is Available

So, since Pentax is able/willing to even add new functions using firmware updates (new CF for K-7), I wonder why they refuse to solve more serious issues in older cameras, specifically inability to rurn off NR on K20D (if the camera freezes for many seconds after each night shot and I miss many pictures because of it, I consider it a serious bug).

Of course not. "Zooming by feet" will significantly change perspective.

Cropping is better workaround, but it degrades IQ, thus loosing one of the prime lenses advantage.

Perhaps some other K10D owners could verify whether their cameras report some reasonable temperature readings (or just fake constant) ?
(My K20D surely does measure tempreature, of course with some delay necessary for cold to get inside, and influenced by warming it by hand when holding it for longer time)

I recommend try to download something from You will see Speedometer with three values
Min < Max < Rapid
Now I wonder, is speed of light considered Rapid speed, or just Max speed ?

Human languages are full of ambiguities and hidden presumptions.
E.g. here you expect that "Best" means "Best of all offered quality settings".
But it could also mean "Best of three standard levels".

If Pentax used e.g.
than it could perhaps be more correct from language POV, but it would be bad from consistency POV, i.e. why the same quality setting is called Good on one camera, and Better on other?

K20D review in Amatuer Photographer

Hmmm, do you really WISH to leave it out ? Can't you just ignore it ? :)

On some conditions I personally find it quite usefull for manual focusing. The worst thing when moving from film to digital is getting used to smaller viewfinder, which is nearly unusable for correct manual focusing - even tiny movement of focusing barrel which causes no visible difference in viewfinder can cause big difference in sharpness of resulting picture :(
I just wish the zoom of liveview to offer better resolution.

K20D - Faulty AF sensor?

* It can be just dust on AF sensor, you can try to clean it by pressed air.
* Is your focusing area set to Auto ? Can you switch it to SEL and try all AF sensors separately ?
* Try to set autofocus mode to AF.C = Continuous. Do you see any improvement ?

How is your K20D setup for jpeg?

You can shoot RAW+ = both RAW and JPEG, and use RAW as backup which you will erase when not needed, i.e. normally use JPEG directly, but when something goes wrong (e.g. incorrect white balance), or when you make shoot of your life (landing of UFO) you still have original RAW.

Another great feature of K20D is that you can do conversion RAW>JPEG in camera, even for several shoots at once! So you can shoot RAW only, and later decide which shoots can be converted to good JPEG, which to more compressed JPEG, and which are worth keeping original - and all this still directly with camera.

These are exact reasons I do not use Kodak. I tried Kodak every one or two years, tried different labs (even specialized for Kodak), and the result was always much much worse than Fuji or Konica. I have no idea why so much people recommend Kodak, I wonder whether they ever tried different brand, or whether they just repeat what Kodak forced them to think through advertising ???

Advantages of buying Pentax DSLRs

Unfortunately K20D does not allow metering with open aperture on M lenses - it is necessary to use Manual mode and meter by Green button, i.e. two extra steps instead of simple plug&play like e.g. with MZ-3. So, M lenses are supported, but I would not say "fully" :(

No, battery was nearly fresh, and the indicator showed Full. I just put it to charger before going out, to not risk dying. As a new toy, I could suck all the power during one day by playing with it :)

SR problem on K20D

Well, I am perplexed. I tested the behaviour I described in the first post many times - I switched manual FL back and forth at least 15 x, and the problem emerged consistently. Between those switching I always turned the camera off, and before fully pressing the shutter switch I always waited to Hand symbol in viewfinder.
Today I wanted to do more testing (to closly analyze exif info), and ... the problem just disappeared, everything works normally as expected!
The only explanation I have is that firmware got a bit mad, but that it was reset when I removed the battery to charge it. Many problems with PC software can be "solved" by resetting computer :) And just turning off the camera was not enough - even in Off position it still works - it can save data to SD card, or it can continue to shoot dark frame for NR.

I also did another test - I mounted A50/1.7 lens (i.e. manual, non digital), and take some pictures with FL set to 50, and then with FL set to 500. The picures taken with incorrect 500 FL was totally blurred, it was not the kind of picture degradation I originally observed.

Anyway, K20D is great !!!

SR problem on K20D

last week I tried to shoot Moon with old mirror 500/8 lens, so I also manually set focal length 500. The result was better than I expected. However, next day, when I did some tests with normal DA18-55 lens, I noticed that pictures taken with SR ON are worse than with SR OFF ! It seems to me that there is a bug in firmware that causes wrong FL is used for SR, i.e. FL of the last manually entered value, instead of actual FL of DA lens.
The behaviour is consistently reproducible - put manual lens and set FL e.g. 50, than put DA lens and set SR ON - the pictures will be better than with SR OFF.
Then put manual lens and set FL e.g. 500, than put DA lens and set SR ON - the pictures will be more blurry than with SR OFF !
(However, the Live View is not affected, i.e. it is always correctly stabilized with DA lens)

It definitively looks like smudges on sensor.
They may/may not appear depending on used lens or aperture.
They may be "latent", i.e. normally invisible/harmless, but under certain weather conditions the humidity can condensate on them.

K20D - still no release priority setting?

* did the original poster complained that his AF does not work ? No. So WHY is this note in this thread at all please ?
* it sounds like you want to imply that Pentax AF actually does not work ? Of course nonsense.
* perhaps you wanted to say "if you want faster auto focus...", but speed was not discussed problem either. You should start new thread.
* you did not say which models are you talking about, or do you think ALL Canons are faster that all Pentaxes ? (I am new to dslr, but my previous film Pentax camera had faster AF that contemporaty Canon in the same price level)
