I was either brushing the dial against stuff while not holding it, or accidentally moving it with my thumb trying to find the AF/ON button :D All fixed by moving it to the front dial!

K1 swapping aperture to front dial?

Is it possible to swap the shutter/aperture dials so aperture is on the front? I'm used to Nikons and on my K1 I tend to brush the wheel with my thumb when grabbing the camera so sometimes I get a wildly different aperture than I expected. I know It's user error but frustrating when shooting wildlife :D

I'd go through the settings myself but my battery died...

Cheers!

More fun with the K1/F*300mm F4.5. I still need to get used to the control layout on the K1, and figure out how to mitigate the aperture wheel moving on its own accord.

I tried my Nikon D300 and 500mm F4 P lens today. Seems my manual focus skills have suffered, and the camera was set to centre weight exposure which didn't help in some shots. I did enjoy not having to get within spooking distance of animals though.

I was photo-ing these guys when they got spooked by some walkers

Sitting so far away in the grass I waited forever for this guy to look up

I was taking photos of cows from a very safe distance hiding behind a log, only to see walkers practically brush up against them when walking through. I might try a 28mm for cow wildlife photos next time... but it seems they get spooked when you stop walking and pay attention. Nobody needs a spooked cow :D

NIKON FM3A..... why so expensive????

I heard that too, and the build quality is apparently a particular disservice to the Nikon brand. It certainly feels and definitely sounds like a cheap toy. I went through a phase of buying broken ME Supers on eBay and one of the auctions I won came with an FG. I was able to resurrect the FG but sadly not the Pentax.

I'm not sure how long it'll last and I don't use it very often but mine is "the little camera that could*" :D

*I've resurrected a few ME Supers but as backups for my good one, whereas the FG has had a good few rolls of film through it as its own "system"

I was playing around with my FG last night with no film in and wondered why it was so fussy when it came to actually giving meter readings... thanks!

Admit Your Worst Camera Abuse - Stories and Pics

I was carrying my F5 with 500mm F4/P lens and slipped backwards stepping up onto a path, landing F5-first onto gravel. The camera+lens were fine though. It's a tough beast.

The main abuse I dish out is daily. I have two "straps" I use for my many cameras, and they're both SPAS-12 canvas shotgun slings. I figure if the strap can hold a SPAS-12 it'll hold whatever camera gear I can throw at it. They also have sizeable steel clasps so the area around my strap loops on my cameras suffer. My K1 is very much un-pristine now...

I use a manual focus Nikon 500mm f/4 P lens with 2x teleconverter on my K1 with no problems wide open. I guess it's not quite THAT legacy though only being the late 80's. I love the lens though.

I got up close to some cows today. I think these are English Longhorns. These things are really quite big, but they let me photo their calves. The adults were so un-bothered that I spent ten minutes crouching to get a particular photo of one but it didn't bring its head up once!

This cow is "Usefull". For what? Being cute!

And one from inside a tunnel!

I slowed the shutter right down to 1/250 at f/8 to get some raindrops in the background of this glamour shot. I could have pushed it a bit further.

And good luck getting past one of my posts without a photo of a sheep

I got a K1 on a whim because I saw a used one in a shop and got to handle it. I had no interest on going FF for my Nikons beyond film, but thought the K1 would be good to get some digital use out of my 50mm and 28mm lenses. Looking back I'd have probably been better off with a K3 as I now use it for wildlife but I don't regret it.

I need a new place to visit... I'm bored of taking sheep portraits (well not bored, but I have plenty of them already :D). The weather was very overcast today so I tried to get more background in.

I also discovered a few quirks with the K1 today. A few times I'd bring the camera to my eye and be like "huh? what button has my arm/ backpack pressed THIS time?" Like suddenly I'm in Tv instead of Av despite the dial being locked.

I really like my long lenses and posting my lame sheep photos to this group, but my 1000mm monstrosity isn't ideal... so I splashed out on an F*300mm F/4.5. It's my first non-manual lens for my K1 so I had to fight off all the auto settings so I could play with it like I do my F5/D300 (I tried taking a photo of a dove sitting on bricks but the autofocus helpfully showed me it was focusing AROUND the bird - thanks!). I prefer the longer reach of the 500mm on my F5/D300 for more portrait-y photos of animals without them running off, but the K1 and F*300 can be used at a distance and cropped way down.

Not the best photo, but I caught a BIF!

It'd be rude not to include a sheep pic...

I've had my Takumar Bayonet 2.5 for a while but never really used it in anger until today, attached to the K1. I think these were all at F/8

Well the deer were within kinda-portrait range today. I'm still blown away by the Gitzo tripod - it's stable enough that I can actually look through the viewfinder and aim/shoot instead of having to use live view and a remote to avoid vibrations.

Pentax K1, Nikon 500mm F/4 P, TC301 teleconverter. I think these were all at F/16

My Manfrotto 393 gimbal is great, but the U-shape made it hard to manually focus, so I treated myself to a Wimberley WH101 and a Gitzo Systematic 3. It's incredibly stable fully extended, and now I can shoot looking through the viewfinder instead of using live view+remote! I never thought I'd get this excited about a tripod!

I managed to test it out on a dreary day just before the deer all ran away

I've removed stuck ones by removing the camera base plate then using pliers plus some plastic scrap to clamp the cap then turn it
