Pentax K-5 (?) - new camera this year

As a K200D owner I can think of lots of things. First on my list would be the better SR mechanism of the K-7. That alone could justify an upgrade for me. Fact is, with the falling prices of the K-7 it's getting very tempting for that reason alone as I'm strictly a hand held shooter. Of course an upgraded sensor, and I would be satisfied with what the K-x has. Would love to see dual wheels and a real glass prism, but that would be just a plus.

Don't need fast fps as I never get out of one shot mod. Save that for the K-7 and beyond. The update doesn't need to be earth shattering. Just a nice refresh would do well. They would likely throw in the movie junk, but I would never use it.

The Leica is 23k without a lens. They don't have a lens for under 4k. That's a whole different price range. Pentax would be competing at a very different price point.

iPhoto can now read Pentax Raw!!!!

That hasn't been true for quite some time. I have been using aperture with 10.4 with no problems. 10.4 does not support my K200. I can't see the raw photos in the finder but they work fine in aperture. I've also heard they work fine in iphoto.

Apple has the ability to update cameras within the application since aperture 2.0 and by-pass the OS. That wasn't the case with aperture 1.X and earlier versions of iPhoto.

new roadmap update (645 Digital)

645 film is 41.5 x 56
135 film is 24 x 36

The standard DMF has been 36 x 48, though one of the newer backs (I forget which one) is 41.5 x 56, and I think the new leica is 30 x 45. In case you're wondering 36 x 48 is twice the area of 135. It would be very unlikely that Pentax would move away from the 3/4 ratio of standard 645.

In my film days I shot Mamiya 645 and a 55mm lens was the equivalent of 34mm on 135. I'm not sure what the equivalent for a 55mm would be on a 36 x 48. Perhaps someone can figure out the ratio with the above numbers.

FA 35mm discontinued

B&H Photo has listed the FA 35/2.0 as discontinued. It's also not showing up on the Pentax U.S.A. site. If you want one Adorama is still listing it, at least for the moment. If you wanted to get one it may be a good idea to grab it while you can.

MF vs. FF

I have no problem with people debating the issue, but plllleeease stop with the weird colored print. It's very irritating to read to the point where I refuse to look at any postings that use it. So your point is lost

MF vs. FF

That I agree with. I remember all to well my time with MF routinely shooting at F/22 or even F/32. I have trouble at times getting the DOF I want with APS-C format without running into diffraction. The problem is exasperated by high pixel counts. I'm voting for (besides Obama) a few tilt/shift lenses from Pentax.

So, let me get this straight, a 13 x 19 print is small. Interesting.

Interesting article, and I'm not surprised. It's taken me some time to figure out that things changed with digital (and this coming from a former MF film shooter). Unlike film, bigger is not necessarily better. Pixel peepers may get chills and thrills comparing this or that camera looking for small differences but when it comes to the print there is virtually no difference. The difference between ASP-C and FF are nonexistent on a print.

Leica opens a door for Pentax

The reason is that Pentax never used film backs, even on there 6x7, they used film inserts. It's a completely different mechanical set up. It would likely be impossible to digitalize the current 645N.

But this does bring up an interesting point. Would Pentax bring out a closed system 645 or redesign the camera to accept digital backs (and film backs). Here's an interesting article from the LL.

Phase One 645 Camera Review

If they made a 645 with the Mamiya standard it would be a much more versatile system.

That's one side of the equation, and a legitimate one. The other side of that is if it's worth it to do so. I don't know much about digital MF but digital 135 is a very small percentage of the DSLR market. I heard it's about 2% of the total DSLR sales. Seems about right with the recent sales figures out of Japan. With the release of the Canon 5Dll there has to be real doubt as to wether Sony will survive the FF market. There's a good chance the A900 may be dead in the water before they even get the door open. A lot of things can be done but is it worth it to do so.

Pentax products at Photokina - disappointment or admiration?

A good approach to mirrorless for pentax would be to collaborate with samsung on a micro APS-C system. Make an adaptor for Pentax lenses and you have a nice smooth transition to micro. I admit I was very much against the micro system when I first heard of it, but as I thought it through I'm getting more interested.

Pentax products at Photokina - disappointment or admiration?

I agree. If you don’t mind I’ll pick up the rant where you left off.

It’s very obvious that all of the recent lenses are meant to simulate the popular focal lengths of what was around with film. I needn't go through the whole list, but just look at the numbers. Pentax is completely focused on APS-C format. They have the most complete lens line up for APS-C. That’s why I came to Pentax from Canon. Three DA primes and a few other lenses later and I’m very satisfied with my decision. Not a moment of regret.

You want high resolution FF, fine. I’ll try and give you some clue as to what you’re in for. I spent years lugging around a 645 film camera. I quickly found out that without a tripod, mirror lock, and anything else you can think of to keep things stable most of that extra resolution was lost. Without it I was better off with my Canon 35mm gear. Do that for 4 or 5 years and get back to me. Are we having fun yet! My first digital camera was a Rebel 350D. What a joy to get rid of all that stuff. I still us a tripod at times, but only when I really need it. With MF there wasn’t a choice. Use it or leave the camera at home. Looking back I would have been happier (and probably better off) staying with 35mm. The same thing is going to happen with a High MP count FF. Suffering for your art is okay, but some things just go to far. I’m staying with APS-C.

The point of this little ramble is that I use Pentax because it has what I want. It works for me. From all indications Pentax has no plans on doing FF. That’s fine with me because I have no plans on doing FF. If Pentax doesn’t have what you want then change systems. If you feel somehow limited with what you have there are other choices. I feel very good about the recent Photokina. Nice entry level camera and some great lenses, all geared towards my favorite format. I just want to get my grubby hands on that DA 15 limited. Personally I think there’s a small number of very vocal, negative people on this site. It’s likely some kind of control thing. I just have to learn to let it go.

One way to get great B & W with the Pentax DSLRs.

I tend to use different B&W conversions for different photos. Depends on what I want out of it. One of my most used for CS3 is the light channel lab method.

1) In CS3 Image/Mode/Lab color
2) In the Channels Palette click on the light channel, then go back and do Image/Mode/greyscale
3) Create a curves layer but don't do anything with it, just click on okay. Go to the blending menu and choose Multiply if it's to light (normally the case) or screen if it's to dark. Use the Opacity slider until it looks about right.

It's still likely going to look a bit flat so create another curves layer. A nice S curve usually does the trick, but you can play with it till it looks right.

the nice thing about using the light channel from lab is that you don't run into any of the noise problems that can come up using the B&W mixer in lightroom or the channel mixer. It also does a much better job of preserving subtle tones in the highlights. It doesn't work for every photo but I use it about 80% of the time. You can make a action for it that makes it very easy.

Pentax Software Issues

I had the same problem. I'm trying to remember the exact solution but it escapes me. It goes something like this. First click on the install package and then do a ctrl/click and then click Show package contents. From there, if I remember correctly you have to find the Mac install folder. From there my memory gets a bit fuzzy but you should be able to figure it out.

I used to print my own B&W using an epson 2200 with a rip program. I got excellent results. Unfortunately the printer developed fatal problems after over five years of use. Instead of investing a bunch of money in the epson 2400 I gave Mpix true B&W prints a try. I'm impressed with the results. It's as good or better then anything I could get with home printing. With the cost of the printer, ink and paper it's likely cheaper in the long run.

Most of the B&W prints I get from Mpix are about spot on with what I see on my monitor. I've had a few problems with some prints that had some deep shadows. Mpix appears to try and bring out the details in the shadows by lightening them with rather ugly results. I was told that I have to click on the Do Not Color Correct check box and they will leave the shadows as is. I'm curious what paper you use and if you check this box off.

It looks as if the latest camera update for Aperture has fixed the problem. No blue screen with any files. Finally. It also fixed the auto rotate which wasn't working with the K200D. Don't know about iPhoto as I don't use it.

iPhoto problems with Pentax RAW

I had updated that the day it came out. Since I was an Aperture user I was waiting for the update before I got the K200D. If I remember correctly I bought the camera the day after the update.

I did some more testing on the ISO settings. It appears as if all of the whole and half step ISO settings are okay. It's only the 1/3 ISO settings that are the problem files. This explains the seemingly random nature of the blue screen problem. Another interesting observation is that the histogram does not show up with any of the problem files.

May have found an answer to the blue screen. I had gotten another batch of seemingly random photos with the blue screen problem. As I was sorting it out in Aperture; key wording the problem files (yes I have a key word just for the blue screen files) so I could export them to bridge, I noticed that all the problem files had odd ISO settings. By odd I mean 640, 250, 160 etc. The 1/3 settings that the K200D can do. It got my interest so I checked on all of my problem files. ALL OF THEM HAD THE ODD ISO SETTINGS. Then I checked the okay files and all of them had 1 f stop settings, as in 100, 200, 400, 800 etc. Without fail if it had the odd ISO I got the blue screen and if it had the one f stop settings it was okay. After looking through several hundred photos it can't be just a coincidence. Check out your problem files and see what you get.

After 2 sessions with no blue screen using sRGB I downloaded about 50 photos into Aperture and about 30 of them showed up with the dreaded blue screen. sRGB is no longer doing the trick for me. What I want to know is if there are any K200D users who are not having a problem with Aperture and iPhoto?
As usual all the problem files work fine in ACR and Pentax Photo Laboratory.

That's not it. I just opened 2995 in ACR and Photoshop. No problems. It's only Iphoto and Aperture that have problems with some K200D PEF files (and DNG in case your wondering).
