Pentax Full Frame Dream Crushed Today

Funny, with all the talk of Nikon-FF-this-and-that from certain usernames, I was thinking either the Nikon shills are in full force here, and/or this is the new advertising method to convince people to buy the new Nikon D800 (at the two major sponsors of this site of course ).

Interesting to note at nikonrumors.com, the post that reveals the dealer costs for a D800 ($2699.96 vs MSRP $2995.95) and D800E ($2969.96 vs MSRP $3299.95). Nikon pockets $2700/$2970 minus production costs per D800/E. A camera store pockets a mere $300/$330 per sale....

Ooooo, the K-01. Interesting camera. A good live HDMI output would be very useful for those looking to broadcast/live stream. Specifically video AND audio. I agree with a lot of people, that this iteration has way more potential as a video camera than a still camera. With confidence, I can say that this K-01 is a ramp-up to what other products Pentax/Ricoh might have. AWESOME!!!!

And cool on resurrecting the old K font.

If you are a serious photographer, you probably don't get two kit lenses and stop, you probably buy one or two or three nice lenses to start, and grow your kit over time, sometimes buying very expensive lenses (sometimes not.).

Compression or the appearance of "compression" or expansion has something to do with distance ratios. Take a head and shoulders shot - one with your favorite 85mm, and one with 24mm, on your favorite 35mm film. **Move close with the 24mm to match subject size.** The face and nose appears flattened with the 85mm. The nose looks longer and the hairline appears to recede with the 24mm.

Why?

For 85mm, the distance ratio of nose to camera:hairline to camera is close to 1:1.
For 24mm, the distance ratio of nose to camera:hairline to camera is considerably less than 1:1

We would normally refer to this apparent lack of compression when using the 24mm in this case as "subject distortion" though that is relative. Go stare at someone's face from 3 inches away and you'll see "distortion" too.

(and yes, I got the concept of distance/perspective 15 years ago....)

Agreed. I learned on film, and focused (ha!) on focal lengths, change in perspective with focus distance, and the resulting compression/stretch in perspective when changing focal length to keep object size the same. Those were the important things to learn about photography. That and how to actually improve my photographic skills....

Shall we argue the merits of MFT vs FF?

If an upcoming lens line-up includes lenses that are meant for APS-C but have FF coverage, that could be a hint to what may come in a few years.... 8)

And mirrorless does not necessarily mean new lens mount, if the registration distance is not changed, a la Pentax Q. The electronics should stay the same, as we already have information transfer between current digital K-mount bodies and F/FA/DA lenses

MY GOODNESS the Fuji X-Pro1 is almost exactly the dimensions of my Pentax MX film camera! (136 x 82.5 x 49.5 mm)

Note that the width of the MX includes the "bulge" for the mirrorbox, and the height of the pentaprism, so there is more "bulk" to the Fuji versus the MX. But still....

dpreview has a hands-on video posted of the camera and a Fuji product manager.

Ah, to shoot manually with this camera - left thumb and index finger on the aperture ring, and right index finger on the shutter speed dial. No toggling between aperture and shutter speed with a freaking button and thumb wheel. Cool too, a traditional shutter button, with what looks like threads for a traditional shutter release cable.

Look at FujiFilm. Still making films and rockin' the digital world. GAH I can't believe I'm saying that

/me looks forlornly at collection of Pentax lenses crying for a Pentax equivalent

Although I am a proponent of digital FF (and the announced D4 is making me drool), I really don't care about the difference in DOF between APS-C and FF:
