Do I really need a KP? UPDATE

I am using the middle grip - good with limiteds as well as big lenses like 11-18/2,8.

As for battery life - using wifi, LV in cold days takes them. So I can recommend 1-2 spare ones. I am regularly changing them. But, to be honest, I needed them only once - during 5-day trip full of active shooting in Slovenian mountains.

Btw. the KP customization is amazing. It has even features which K-1II misses.

GR III Question: Enforcing Minimum Shutter Speed in Auto ISO
Posted By cport
Replies: 11
This depends in which mode (Tv, Av, etc.) you are ...

In Av - once max ISO is reached, the min shutter speed can be even lowered and the exposure can be preserved ...

In Tv - once max ISO is reached, the min shutter speed is preserved and the exposure can be "underexposed" ...

In M ... it is completely up to you ;-)

It all depends on your setting and needs ;-)

JPT: Perfect tip how to turn on wifi ... thanks!

People likely do not know about the reviews. I was surprised that even on Dpreview site there are many "missing" reviews of Pentax (Ricoh) equipment.

GR III: question + tips?

Sorry for the stupid question - this is the second day I have the GR III.
I do not understand "Fn Button Setting":

1) Inside "Fn Button Setting" one can find "Focus Settings". The first option there is "Same as Shutter Button". How it can be different with Shutter Button? Can I use another button (different from Shutter Button) to focus?

EDIT: It was enough to look at the user guide, p. 58.

2) Are there some tips how to better handle this little camera? I mean like to press UP + the front roller for a fast change of the snap focus distance?

I know, but ... My point was that Ricoh haven't stopped working on new products. The new GR is quite amazing.

I agree. At least for me, the Pentax future is brighter than some years ago. Even in the APS-C line - when they decided to release new high-end DA* lenses.

Sure, I tend to agree with you. Now there is a need to focus on DSLR only. But I think that they can be successful with this strategy whatever the world "successful" means. I am convinced that they will survive and that is enough for me.

Ricoh slowly innovates Pentax lenses - but when they prepare them, they are good. APS-C shooters will have a new DA* 16-50/2,8, maybe a new DA* 50-135/2,8, alltogether with DA* 11-18/2,8 ... I think that they will be ready for serious shooting for the next 10 years again, especially with the K-new. The only Pentax lens I really miss is a small(ish :)) DA 24/1,4 WR for APS-C bodies.

With a new body every 5 years I will survive.

Of course, before buying my first DA* lens this year I have been looking for other options. So far, none of them has been suitable for my needs. So far, I can have a small system with limiteds if I want to.

Do I really need a KP?

I do not think so :) Do you miss something important?

As KP user I know that KP is a mixture of features of K-70 and K-3

- there are only a few features which are unique for KP (better IBIS, advanced multiexposure modes, third wheel, the rear display ... than K-3, better AF, IBIS, third wheel ... than K-70), but only for some people they are the must-have features.

What makes KP unique is the handling, ergonomics obtained mainly due to the third wheel.

I would rather "invest" in lenses.

KP- AV Mode Settings Help

I have a KP, I had some older bodies ... and I think that you cannot set up min. shutter speed. And I miss this feature, because I use Av and AutoISO mostly.

However, you can set up how fast the shutter speed should be growing: go to Auto ISO Setting in the main menu.

Upgrade 12-24 to 11-18?
Posted By cport

11-18 has slightly worse linear distorsion, but is also almost abberation free.

Anyway, apart from huge difference in AF precision and AW, the overall handling is the biggest advantage - having FOCUS CLAMP when using filter? It is amazing. Even zooming is not an issue because 11-18 is parfocal.

But sure, not everybody will use this.

Upgrade 12-24 to 11-18?

... and I have never regretted. It is really an excellent lens. The longer I have it the more I like it, especially in harsh conditions! But I did not have 15 and 14 ...

So it is up to you, what is your style of shooting. 12-24 is really good, especially in terms of sharpness, it does have nicer starburst! But what I did not like was the flare resistance when shooting sunsets, I was unable to remove some of them and it looked ugly. So I decided to do the move ...

Looking back, I would have done this again. There is one more big pro for 11-18 - the autofocus when shooting reports. AF of 11-18 is not even faster, but it is more reliable, even in AF-C (both lenses on the same KP).

Agree with the text above.

Ricoh made a huge progress in AF since the K-5 era, especially in AF-S. Many people complained about AF-C in all newest bodies, but there were two main limiting factors - slow (in terms of AF speed) or screw-driven lenses, and lower number of AF points. But the situation has changed in the last years, because many lenses were released.

My current experience (KP + 55-300 PLM) is that AF-C is perfectly usable. With newer, much faster body having more AF points, I am convinced that that even AF-C will be significantly improved.

Thanks for your reply. According to tests, Haida ND1000 should be worse in flare resistance. What is your experience?

Thanks for your reply. You use it on K-1. When using the filter in APS-C mode, is there also some wigneting when using just one filter at 11mm?

Hi, what are your recommendations of strong ND (ND1000) filters?

Of course, B+W filters would be the best, but they are expensive for occasional use (82mm on DA* 11-18). And there are cheaper or no name filters I am afraid to risk problems with.

What I found the so-so solution might be Hoya ProND1000 filter - reasonable price for reasonable IQ.

KP look and feel

From the very beginning - I did not like the KP look, the rear display seemed to be quite small.

Coming from K-5II, I also had mixed feelings concerning the build quality - buttons are smaller, shutter button, battery lock looked cheap. But that was right after having long-time experience with an amazing high-end model. Nowadays I like the ergonomics, features, I got used to buttons and I have no problems with KP.
