QS is a feature on your (manual) focusing ring what allows it to move/re-focus in AutoFocus mode. (You can move focusing ring while in AF mode) Great stuff!

To sum it up (have both, K-5&DA16-45)

- DA16-45 has no motor
- DA16-45 has QS!
- K-5 has the assist beam for LOW lite, turns on/off in menu
- it seems your K-5 didn't get hurt by new jammed lens

Your package could have been handled "ugly" in shipping to jam zooming/focusing. If it works, use the lens - it's a fun one with reversed zoom action (extends to get wide). You got it CHEEP!

Describe "followed the instructions". The Fwdc216b.bin file inside of downloaded k5_2_104.EXE must be (double clicked} uncompressed on PC and Fwdc216b.bin file copied onto the SD card. Sounds like you are copying over the downloaded file instead of the Fwdc216b.bin. BTW, Fuji sends straight bin files, what feels like mailing item with stamp on it instead of boxed...

Or you can try a b&w Fuji (Freestyle Photographic Supplies - Traditional Black & White Film, Paper, Chemicals, Holgas and ULF or so), cheap to develop at home & scan (on flatbed) yourself to have some more independent fun... Nice catch, A35mm and A80-160mm zoom are excellent.

Pentax 645D best SDHC card?

To think you'll get 45mb/s from your 645D with "recommended" SanDisk would be INCORRECT. Since 645D does NOT support UHS-I (45mb/s speed), it would be degraded to 30mb/s as the previous generation Class 10. You can get that for half the price of (unsupported by 645D) UHS-I. Only Pentax K-01 is specified to support UHS-I 45mb/s speed. Perhaps a 645D Mk2 will, if that ever happens... Read the fine print before buying, as always.

K-5 IIs External Flash not working

Borrow or try in store PENTAX (digital) flash 360 or 540 FGZ to see if your assumption "it seems like my camera has a problem" is correct. No manufacture is obligated to be compatible with 3rd party of anything.. Good luck!

Pentax 2013 Shirt ordering page!

@SlickYamaha Please clarify.

You say: "Also, if you do order more than 2, Adam is giving away memberships to those people!" - which is 3 and up.
Adam says: "If you order two or more shirts, you will get free Marketplace access on our forum. $5 of each shirt sale will be donated to the forum." - which is 2 and up.

Which is it, 2 or 3. Thanks!

First shots - K5IIs.. hmmmm

My first reaction - Substandard lenses for K-5IIs (18-135wr & Sigma) will not take an advantage of what it can give and than only "glum" light available, helping to kill expected contrast.

Perhaps borrow or rent a star PENTAX glass (forget 3rd party stuff), wait for some sun and start your session. Since you appear to expect a PRO results, some time MUST be invested to a PP treatment as well.

Than you might score some memorable "time stamps" (pictures) to put a smile on your face. Good luck hunting, dear photo-friend...

Not sure where that "design feature" is documented, but my 645n experienced dozens of actuations with 120 insert and no film in it with no issue at all. Sometimes users mention need to re-set with pen the small button under the insert. Hope this helps.

Don't try to remove the door. Just open it and it slides into the grip. Before you do that, remove the rubber tab on body (for grip) contacts and place the tab in compartment on grip, not to loose it. Load batteries with camera in OFF position. Enjoy your new toy...

Pentax smc DA 16-45mm f/4 ED AL

Yes it is a great zoom, noticeably better than the DA18-55 II (optically a bit updated version 2) I still keep. For $200 on used market, you get considerably sharper and wider zoom than 18-55 (2 mm makes a difference on the wide side!) what compared very well in sharpness at F4 & 5.6 with DA*16-50 I tried. For 1/4 the price, I kept the still in production DA16-45. 67 mm filter vs 77mm and almost half the weight was also a factor.

Understand, the DA17-70 F4 is only SDM. Therefore no good for older bodies than K10D, what must be updated to FW 1.30 to recognize it.

I took the 16-45 with me to Europe (also to Prague, CZ) and was glad I did. It's good for video too, has the quick shift and the "reversed" zoom is an interesting feature as well.

Simplified pros & cons K-5II vs K-5IIs ?

However, moire can be easily fixed in a current PP software. But you cannot get back the original RAW data if it's not there from AA bodies. For 16x24 prints, 5IIs should be a better choice.

It's MX with interchangeable screens, DOF and some, not ME.. This old pre-LX class semi-pro in it's time, still sells for $100 or so in a nice shape. In addition to all good advise, it would be desirable to take 2 button batteries (LR44, A76 class) and check that nice and interesting meter in viewfinder. Hopefully it works and than give all times a little ride (1/1000~1sec & B). 1 sec and self-timer may be slow, if it was sitting around... Good luck with your new "adventure"!

The only disappointing about your post is you didn't recognize what's good and than the muddy take from Coolpix. Give your self a chance to learn your DSLR and soon you'll give your junky P&S to someone you don't like .

flash for k5

Use your K-5 for intended projects before you decide on how much flash power you want. K-5 may surprise you how far you can push it with available light (including indoor games with DA*50-135 or other similarly great glass). Little fill from AF360-FGZ was all I ever needed. Pentax (360&540) vs Metz (50&58) is smaller&lighter (no swivel on 360), but a bit more fragile as well.

Pentax Color

"Pentax having nice colors" was alive way before any RAW existed and was attributed to SMC coating. Pentax coating was "NEUTRAL", Canon "WARM", Nikon "COLD" when processed in pre-press commercial printing world (my walk of life since 1969). The Pentax color was easier to work with. As many addressed, it doesn't matter much any more in today's digi world.

Between 70 and 77, definitely 77 for your landscape. It's sharper. But 70 appears better for some nice portrait. Done that, not just read it on a blog...
